Centralized scheduling has improved automation and reduces manual monitoring for complex workflows
The best features JAMS Scheduler offers are centralized job scheduling, dependency management, and monitoring. I also appreciate the alerts and retry options because they help us handle failures without constantly checking jobs manually. Centralized scheduling makes it easier to manage all our jobs from one place instead of maintaining multiple schedulers or scripts. Dependency management is especially useful for chaining workflows because JAMS Scheduler can automatically trigger the next job only when the required previous step completes successfully. Another useful feature is the monitoring and alerting. If a scheduled job fails or runs longer than expected, we can quickly identify it and take action, which is particularly helpful for production support and reducing manual monitoring. JAMS Scheduler has helped quite a bit with identifying common job failures, missed schedules, dependency issues, and execution errors. The alerts and job history make it easier to identify the failure point and take corrective action without manually checking every workflow. JAMS Scheduler's code-driven automation has been useful for handling more complex scheduling logic and workflows that go beyond simple time-based triggers. It is important for us because we can combine scripts, dependencies, conditions, and parameters to support different production scenarios without creating too much manual intervention.

Unified orchestration has reduced costs and improves governance for complex data workflows
I would say it would be much more helpful if Astro by Astronomer can provide an MCP to use and integrate with Astro by Astronomer and their AI agent Auto, so that we can use our tools like Claude, Code, or Cursor to have a central location where we integrate that MCP in Databricks via the AI gateway, and then we can have a place where we can connect to Astro by Astronomer, Databricks, other tools such as Jira and DataDog, and then have a much more comprehensive analysis and overview and monitoring of the entire data ecosystem. Having an MCP integration would tremendously help us to have a more comprehensive data platform that is more AI-ready. That is one of the features that I can think of. Another thought would be having an integration with Kubernetes instead of just scheduling everything on Astro by Astronomer workers. That would be helpful. One thing I can think of is that the Astro by Astronomer local developer environment can be improved further, but perhaps that is a very niche use case that I have in mind, and it may not be useful for others. There is room for improvement around having an improved UI and also integration with other tools. On governance, I would say we can have a more granular level of governance even inside workspaces. Having much more granular control over people belonging to the same team in Astro by Astronomer could have different access to different DAGs, depending upon our tagging strategy. That is one of the areas I can suggest in terms of improvement. The AI capabilities can be improved further. I would compare the current AI capabilities to newer models provided by Claude such as Opus or Codex.

Stable, connects with everything, and has great technical support
The new version is going to have more web services where you could string together various web services so that you can create a workflow across multiple web services, which I don't think is there today. It's not easy to do today. You have to use other tools to accomplish things. However, if the functionality exists, we haven't tested that out yet.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The built-in triggers are great."
"I find the historical tracking feature of JAMS invaluable for reviewing past events."
"The product is easy to use."
"The scheduling and execution of jobs are the most valuable features. The scheduling is important because if there is a task we want to execute at 4:00 AM, there's no way we will have someone who can manually run the job. In addition, we execute 100 to 200 jobs per day, and manual intervention is not an option."
"JAMS gives operations teams a single place to manage, monitor, and track job execution, which from my perspective as a developer improves coordination between teams because everyone has visibility into the status of critical workloads and simplifies troubleshooting since job history, execution status, and other relevant information are all easily accessible, ensuring that business-critical processes are executed consistently and reliably across the organization."
"One of the best features JAMS Scheduler offers is that it is cheaper than any other scheduler, making it a significant advantage alongside its user-friendliness that allows easy checking of logs and failures."
"JAMS Scheduler has positively impacted our organization by allowing us to avoid building custom tools and use something that is more enterprise-ready."
"Because we have gone from a lot of manual processes to automated processes with JAMS, we have been able to free up IT staff time, and for just the Technical Operations Center team that I manage, it has saved about 20 hours a week."
"The best features Astro by Astronomer offers, in my opinion, are easy setup and good tutorials."
"<p>When I say it simplified development and user experience, I mean that it definitely made onboarding easier and reduced time significantly.</p>"
"Astro by Astronomer has positively impacted my organization because it is open source code, so we can use it in AWS, Azure, GCP, or on servers that we have on-premise, ensuring we can use it in every situation."
"The best features Astro by Astronomer offers include a large operator and library that I can work with for different use cases."
"Previously, developing DAGs took days and sometimes a sprint, now I can deliver within a couple of hours."
"Astro by Astronomer has impacted my organization positively because all the automation that was done manually before is now automated and gives us more time to analyze and concentrate on important business matters."
"The best features that Astro by Astronomer offers are fairly fast deployment, convenient integration with Airflow, and it is quite easy to scale."
"Astro by Astronomer has positively impacted my organization because it has helped me save time due to the big support and large community, allowing them to help me solve problems that I encounter while working with Astronomer."
"The solution can scale."
"Its ability just to connect to anything is its most valuable aspect."

Cons

"I take off a star because of a particular job that I have scheduled for every Monday at 6:00 AM. The setting was unintuitive when it said 'workdays' because it turns out that twice this year it didn't run because Monday was a holiday."
"The tabs in the JAMS file transfer could be clearer. It would help us demonstrate to our client that JAMS not only automates jobs but also does fast transfers, and it's an alternative that supports and filters different kinds of platforms. Filtering file transfers will be highly beneficial to them."
"The main dislike about JAMS Scheduler is that nowadays in this AI world, the UI they provide is not user-friendly."
"For the most part, JAMS is very stable. Occasionally, if you leave multiple windows open over a period of time, it is necessary to end that task and restart."
"The ACL or access permission area needs to be improved. When it comes to defining and providing security permissions, it's a bit confusing if you are new to JAMS. JAMS needs to improve the features for security access or permissions."
"I'm not sure if they have fixed it in a newer version, but there is no global search in the version I have. If I have multiple sub-folders that are named for business units, like HR or IT, and I have to search for a job, I cannot search from the top. I have to go to the HR folder to search for a particular job, or to the IT folder."
"JAMS has built-in reporting. I've never really used it. I tried using it a few years ago and I couldn't figure it out. It was wonky. It could be improved upon."
"The cost has definitely gone up tremendously. That is where I do know, as much as the feature sets are there, and if the newly acquired company is going to be doing a pushback, they might just say, 'Do we still need to pay this much? Or at that point, should we look into an alternative?'"
"Astro by Astronomer could improve by reducing costs or decreasing infrastructure management and having less dependency on Kubernetes so that the infrastructure is simpler."
"One challenge I find with Astro by Astronomer is the cost because it is relatively higher than other tools."
"I would recommend making it easier to read the logs in Astro by Astronomer because the logs are pretty hard to follow, especially for the pipelines that are processing much data, such as our DBT, where we have issues finding something in the logs."
"There is still a barrier for people who are not familiar with some of the prerequisite knowledge, but I do also think that is not something that needs to be fixed."
"The documentation part of Astro by Astronomer can be made easier and more generic, not specific to the integration with each of the services."
"I think that one year ago, Astro by Astronomer needed to improve in reliability because it was a bit slow to develop and sometimes it crashed."
"I think Astro by Astronomer could improve by providing more visibility and webinars about the new features they are releasing for Airflow, as since we migrated to Astro, we have not had the opportunity to fully utilize or have considered that we are not using the latest up-to-date features."
"One area for improvement is the recent change in the UI with task groups introduced in version two point three and above."
"The new version is going to have more web services where you could string together various web services so that you can create a workflow across multiple web services, which I don't think is there today."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is very fair. We have seen very minimal to no price increases over the years. We are not banging down the door of support all the time either. I would imagine if we were a company that submitted a dozen support tickets a week for the last nine years, then it might be a little different because we would be eating up everybody's time. However, for what we get out of it, the pricing is extremely fair. Back when we were originally looking and brought in JAMS, we were looking at a couple of the other competitive products that were in this space, but the pricing from JAMS was far and away better than what the other competitors could offer for the same functionality."
"There are no additional costs other than the license for Fortra's JAMS which is affordable."
"It's expensive, to be honest, but it does the job."
"It's certainly a lot cheaper than Tivoli and Control-M. In comparison to them, you get a lot more bang for your buck. You get pretty much the whole functionality and more, in some cases, when compared to Control-M, but at a fraction of the price."
"JAMS is relatively inexpensive, with additional costs only incurred for tags, other services, and optional support renewals."
"The product is reasonably priced, and we don't have any add-ons."
"In the end, you'll find that it's really worth the price. There is some sticker shock, but it's worth every dime."
"Take advantage of its scalability. You can start small. The initial cost is very reasonable. Once you have started picking up the tool and adopting it, then you can scale up from there and buy more agents."
