Solid backup tool with good scalability
The last scenario in which I used Bacula was for a customer who needed some open-source tool which could support encryption at that time. We managed to convince the customer to use Bacula to deploy it in their environment It was a very good project. The Bacula concept, topology, and networking…

Backup operations have become reliable and reporting now simplifies hybrid cloud protection
Veeam Data Platform has Veeam Enterprise Manager as well as Veeam ONE as valuable features, which allow us to generate various kinds of reports that are required for the customer. Instant VM Recovery is a good feature of the high-speed recovery features in Veeam Data Platform, and Continuous Data Protection (CDP) is also a good feature. Ransomware protection is a good feature added in Veeam Data Platform from version 12 onwards, and the ability to create immutable repositories is also a good feature in Veeam. The analytics part of Veeam Data Platform is a good solution because I have worked on various backup technologies such as EMC NetWorker and NetBackup. However, I have not used the analytical parts currently but will check it out. Streamlining processes as well as saving money are benefits that Veeam Data Platform provides for the end user, as it allows for application-aware backups and database backups without the need for various kinds of licenses that other backup software requires. Veeam offers socket-based licenses, instance-based licenses, and capacity-based licenses, which is a great feature.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Bacula is pretty stable."
"Bacula is very solid, very stable, and very scalable."
"It can be used in virtually any environment we have onsite."
"It is easy to scale Bacula Enterprise even if your system is growing tremendously in data and servers."
"The solution has extensive documentation and a very active community."
"The most valuable features are the special plugins such as SAP HANA databases, Microsoft SQL, and various types of virtualization."
"Technical support is excellent in my opinion."
"The solution has had a tremendous impact on our public company, as we are now cost-effective and even better on performance with our restorations."
"Before Veeam, we had backup infrastructure sprawl. Veeam was able to reduce our overall backup windows while reducing our dedicated backup infrastructure."
"The solution offers a strong performance, higher than Acronis, and has a high level of compatibility with the majority of applications such as Nutanix and others."
"Veeam communicates with the vCenter in VMware, which means it's very smooth and doesn't interrupt production on VMware and you can backup or restore anytime, anywhere."
"Most of the features that we can use with HPE products are directly integrated with the Veeam. This is very important for the customers to have only one pane of glass to manage the backups and also use the HPE products for the backups."
"I think this solution does VM back ups very well."
"They provide good technical support and we are satisfied with the support we have received."
"We managed to restore all of the VMs from Veeam and disaster recovery was executed as expected within our SLA."
"The safety and reliability of data loss and retrieval has been amazing ever since we implemented Veeam."

Cons

"The initial setup could be a bit easier."
"Relying solely on a desktop is a bit frustrating as its GUI isn't exactly responsive."
"A more user-friendly interface (GUI) can be developed."
"Bacula needs a graphical user interface because, for administrators, the command-line interface is okay, but for the average user it is not very easy."
"The interface needs to be easier for adding new devices to be managed."
"Easier setup and configuration, perhaps including a GUI, would be an improvement."
"We would like to see an improvement in the functionality of the GUI."
"We are looking for a unique interface that can rule both enterprise and open source editions. Such a thing does not yet exist."
"One of the downsides to Veeam is that it's just software-based."
"Support for physical servers. Although we are continuing to virtualize all of our servers; there are, at this time, a few physical servers in our organization."
"Offering mobile apps that give engineers a global view of his backup regime would be a "nice to have" feature."
"The pricing is very high."
"We had issues with the technical support. We had a very good response for some incidents and a very bad one for other incidents."
"We found that due to faster than typical internet speeds available (i.e. 1 GB) – we were not seeing the benefits that we had expected."
"Veeam Backup Replication could improve by having more comparably with other hardware with the immutable copy feature."
"Since the solution has many options, it is not easier to give tasks to schedule it."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have a perpetual license."
"This is an open-source solution."
"The pricing is reasonable."
"On a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive, I rate the price a five."
"The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better."
"I find the pricing to be okay."
"I acknowledge there are concerns about pricing, specifically in gaining more customers for VM. We've encountered difficulties in convincing them due to pricing issues. So, I rate it a six."
"This product is not cheap, but it's well worth the cost."
"The price of Veeam Backup Replication has been increasing their price and my customers are asking why. They have CPU-based licenses and a Universal License, the prices should be reduced."
"The price of Veeam Backup & Replication is reasonable compared to IBM."
