Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

A great ERP for medium and even small businesses
If one has experience in the ERP market, big brands like Microsoft require a lot of money over other platforms like Odoo. We can implement an on-premise model for some enterprise customers because it gives privacy and security. For other customers, we provide the cloud version. Currently, we recommend customers implement the ERP platform on the cloud environment because of the flexibility and scaling. I recommend that customers invest in a solution with the possibility of scaling in the future while providing many functions and features out of the box. In many ERPs we provide, although we would recommend ELMA as a default option for medium and even enterprise customers, they need bigger brands. ELMA 365 should be the second or third option for customers right now. I rate ELMA 365 a ten out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I would definitely recommend the solution to anyone."
"The flexibility characteristic in a BPMS, through BPMN and DMN, is undoubtedly the most interesting feature for our business."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to share the logic within the rules engine with the business, so you can put it up for everybody to read."
"We helped our customer to reduce their licensing and operational costs to a larger extent by proposing Camunda BPM to replace the existing BPM solution."
"The interface and the number of connectors that they provide are the most valuable features."
"The product is stable."
"We have been able to save costs using this solution compared to the product we used before."
"The most valuable features are the management of internal processes, the ability to execute from design and the model for internal processes, the ability to make processes visible, and the ability to have information about the current state of each instance."
"A lot of customers, when we introduce this kind of product into their organization, it provides a lot of analytics."

Cons

"I'd like to see a number of preset features and configurations included in the solution to make it more of a plug-and-play kind of product."
"The business model could be easier to understand."
"Community support is basically what I'm looking for. Other than that, it is okay for now."
"The only drawback is the time that it takes to have a complete set of workflows implemented on the Camunda platform."
"It has a Postgres database at the backend, and it is very difficult to scale if you increase the number of processes running. We did hit some barriers. We were able to overcome them, but it was a problem. Camunda has another product called Camunda Cloud, which supposedly doesn't have the same scalability problems, but we are not using Camunda Cloud because the set of features is smaller than Camunda On-Premises. So, its scalability can be improved. Because it has a single database, it is more difficult to scale if you have a huge success."
"On the other hand, if I were rating it for use by the public then I would rate it a three out of ten."
"Documentation can be improved. Right now, the documentation isn't properly organized."
"It is not difficult to change existing processes. The difficulty was in integration, for example, to call an external web API, and in the security capabilities, to use a vault for secrets. That was difficult."
"Customers want improved productivity."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"While the license isn't budget-friendly, careful consideration and calculated planning for a significant number of licenses can make it more cost-effective."
"There were some features that were only available in the paid version."
"We're using the open-source version for now."
"When compared with the proprietary products, the pricing costs are much less, even though it is an enterprise edition."
"We pay for the license of this solution annually."
"We're using the free version. We used the Enterprise version for some time. If I compare free versus what we paid at that time, the Enterprise version costs a lot. For the additional functionality that we got with the Enterprise version, it was too costly."
"Its price is decent. Everything is included in the license. The Community version is also good to start with. We are using the Community version."
"There is a bit of scope for improvement in how the licensing and pricing are done. They are based on the number of processing instances you execute on the cluster... but on the self-hosted mode, the pricing model should be customized."
"I rate the solution's pricing a five out of ten."
