Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

Good for automatically triggering workflows, but needs to be more customizable
We use this product for many different reasons related to our business We use it a lot for creating workflows to transfer materials between plants, which is a signature part of what we do. The most valuable feature is the ability to automatically trigger the workflow. This solution needs to be…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is quite easy to build a simple process without any knowledge of programming."
"The headless nature of the Camunda Platform is something that has helped us to build our own logic and platforms on it."
"The most valuable feature is the scheduling."
"The flexibility is great and I appreciate the compact and clear source code."
"One valuable feature of Camunda is that it's an open BPM, so it was easier for users and developers to work together to define the rules and define the process, given their BPM and standard architecture."
"Camunda's support for BPMN 2.0 is a great advantage because it allows us to have a common language to discuss technology and business in the same perspective."
"Since day one, our goal was to build reusable components that can be used in other projects, and we recently did a discovery for one of our projects and we found that we could reuse 80 percent of what we had developed on the Camunda platform, and the microservices and the connectors were reusable and that really reduced the development effort drastically for that use case."
"They keep on coming up with different features, which is helping us a lot."
"Took few hours to build workflows with ready-to-use templates, so we had improved productivity."
"It’s easier, more controlled and automatized checks of the budget through this system."
"We use it a lot for creating workflows to transfer materials between plants, which is a signature part of what we do."

Cons

"If there were some industry templates it would have helped significantly, because it is similar to a process map for a domain. That is what we are currently creating, a domain-relevant process map."
"As we experienced some difficulties in the beginning, deployment took almost a month."
"The support definitely can be improved. Apart from that, the language should be extendable to other platforms. If I want to write, I'll run a different platform, like Python code on top of it, or COBOL code on top of it, and it should support those languages."
"I would say that Camunda should actually focus on small cases as well. There's a lot of space out there, for small businesses. If they can, they should cater to them."
"I think it would be important to internationalize the Cockpit and the Admin as well as with the Tasklist."
"It would be better if the tool were made less reliant on Java."
"We have faced problems with the performance."
"The initial set up could be simplified, it's complex."
"This solution needs to be more customizable."
"Yes, for email notification but it could also be with company network."
"The reports for users. The reports with more details; we have to generate them by the database."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I tried to get some information about buying the license for the solution, but I found it kind of hard to understand the business model."
"The most attractive feature of the product is that it is open source."
"The price of the solution is reasonable."
"It is good for a startup. When we started, its price was fair, but the way we are using it to orchestrate microservices makes it expensive. When you are growing as a company, you would have more microservices, and you would have more users. There is an exponential effect when you are growing in terms of the number of conditions, processes, and users because they bill you per process. So, the price was increasing very quickly for us, and it was very difficult."
"We use a community version."
"We pay for the license of this solution annually."
"Camunda Platform is an open-source product."
"We use the open-source version, which can be used at no cost."
