We use it to backup some high output critical physical servers, knowing that in case of disaster we could still recover to our VM environment. The user interface needs improvement.
The user interface needs improvement, the selection boxes to select a backup job are very small not adequate for managing 400+ backup jobs, we only see 8 job names in the small scroll window. The scheduler features are lacking, we must edit backup specs to reach the option to change the schedule. The new reporting feature has greatly improved the product, prior to this it was very difficult to have a full view of our backup schedules when scheduling a new job. Since the move from Syncsort to Catalogic, the quality control of upgrades has diminished and backups that used to work could not be restored without contacting Catalogic for a fix. We still see a lot of value in the product, but hope that the next few updates will not cause more issues... We wanted a mission critical enterprise solution, and sincerely hope that the future upgrades will bring the product back on track.

Positive impacts seen with improved data security and reliable support
I have six months of experience with the product, and as a consultant, the use cases for NetApp AltaVault mainly stand out for me. Regarding the deduplication feature in the product, I am interested in whether clients are using it. There are different integrations available with NetApp AltaVault, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and I want to understand how they impact data security policies in my case.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"By implementing an OVF (docker based) and without any agents on your servers, you’ll get a system which provides you with: Orchestration, Automation DR and Data analytics."
"Catalogic has great features including the ability to P2V from snapvaults, and recently the addition of agent-less backups for Linux."
"The deduplication engine. Right now, we're at about 10.5 to 11 times deduplication of our backup data."
"The most valuable features of the solution stem from the fact that it is easy to use and integrate with whichever operating systems you use, providing you with a complete view, especially when you plan to migrate to some other operating system."
"The flexibility, being able to virtualize it, port it wherever I like, test my backups, test my DR capabilities whenever I like without impacting anybody, is great."
"We're doing AWS S3 with Glacier with cloud-based backup and the integration is good, as it works with Veeam and Commvault."
"The most valuable feature is the portability of large archived data, as you're able to put things on large on-prem, low-cost storage and then augment that with even lower cost storage in the cloud."
"The solution can be used for all Office 365 applications."
"The dashboard is useful for managing data backups."
"It took an entire silo of complexity and simplified it to a device in the cloud."

Cons

"And hearing about all these awesome posibilities, it kind of struck me that this was only possible with NetApp storage."
"Since the move from Syncsort to Catalogic, the quality control of upgrades has diminished and backups that used to work could not be restored without contacting Catalogic for a fix."
"I really want to partner it with the SnapCenter. We haven't implemented that yet. We're upgrading all of our stuff to the ONTAP 9, which you had to have."
"The product must provide multi-gate connectivity."
"It wasn't as easy as I thought it was going to be. It was actually a complete rebuild, and then migrate the database."
"We have had issues getting to the right person, but once you get to the right person, they are knowledgeable."
"I would like to see more web support."
"We've had a lot of issues, crashed the service console a lot, service crashes."
"There are some bits it could do better. With tighter integration maybe with Veeam, or something like that, it'd be really good."
"To clarify, the catalog feature is lacking, and you need to depend on somebody else."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"It's quite cost-effective."
"The pricing is not too bad, but could be a little better."
"There is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution, which comes to around 3,000 USD."
"The price is a bit high."
"It is a rather expensive program."
"In one use case, and we have several, to run for a particular customer, the price is about $375,000 a year."
"You could compare it to a Dell EMC or ECS, and I think it's probably a little less costly than that. Within the marketplace, it's a medium cost."
