AI-driven insights have reduced downtime and improved cross-team collaboration
We encountered some challenges while using Dynatrace. Although the initial setup was smooth, fine-tuning alert thresholds and custom metrics took some time. Another challenge was that Dynatrace charges based on host units, so we had to carefully plan our agent deployments. The licensing model is expensive. Additionally, the complexity of setup is an issue. While OneAgent and auto-discover services are powerful, the setup is more complex compared to other tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. These integrations are simple and basic, but Dynatrace setup requires more complexity based on the environment. For new users wanting to use Dynatrace, it is difficult. However, the AI-related solutions and metrics took us to the next level for identifying and fixing things. Dynatrace requires an agent for operation. OneAgent is powerful, but it is also resource-heavy. On lightweight nodes or older systems, the agent can slightly impact performance. If Dynatrace could implement a lightweight agent behavior, we could make things faster. Additionally, if Dynatrace could add a long-term retention policy so that we could store more data and find fine-grained details, that would help us. While Dynatrace managed edition supports on-premises deployment, the SaaS version depends on cloud connectivity. For highly regulated or air-gapped environments, setup and updates can be challenging. Although the initial setup is smooth, if someone wants to fine-tune it and fully understand the tool end-to-end, it could be tricky.

User-level monitoring with near-real-time analytics boosts service availability

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I have reduced our disruption time. With the automatic alerts, we prevent and better catch the root cause of problems."
"It prevents (together with performance testing) production performance issues which usually result in customer complaints or system downtime."
"We have used Dynatrace in our performance testing environments to get ahead of issues before they make it into production."
"When it comes to the nature of digital complexity, I think the role of AI for IT's ability to scale in the cloud, and managing performance, is very important because as large platforms grow, it's going to be extremely important to be able to pinpoint those problems and help find root cause analysis, that much faster."
"PurePath lets us see the steps of a transaction and the time of each one, then we can know exactly what happened in what time."
"Dynatrace has positively impacted our organization by helping us reduce downtime, as it was much higher before using Dynatrace, and we are now able to minimize downtime for the servers and applications and easily trace and diagnose issues at the infrastructure level using Dynatrace, which is definitely helpful for enterprises using IT systems."
"Having the metrics easily understood and easily articulating the information."
"Honestly, I've heard this asked of others, and for me, I'm thinking, "Can there be anything else?" I just haven't even thought about it because I feel that Dynatrace thinks of everything before I can even think of the need for anything else."
"The reporting feature is good for us."
"We use RUM and BSM and so far it has been really good at getting real user transactions from a real user monitor and then tying it to a BSM single view dashboard, where we get the whole realistic picture."
"We found this to be a stable product."
"The Micro Focus technical support is quite good."
"It offers near-real-time analytics, which is helpful."
"With the solution, you can easily access any issues in your infrastructure."
"The technical support is good at resolving issues."
"Real User Monitor has made it easier to drill down and see how users connect to and use our website."

Cons

"Right now, there is a log analysis feature. This is maybe a little more deeper than the log analytics in comparison to other tools, like Splunk or Sumo Logic. If Dynatrace can come up with this replay feature, that would be great."
"It could improve its GUI interface. The GUI design is too crowded and the icons are small. Sometimes I end up clicking on the wrong button."
"Dynatrace could be improved primarily with regards to pricing. These tools are expensive."
"In terms of improvements, I believe Dynatrace could enhance cost and licensing structures, as the current pricing can be expensive for large-scale deployments."
"I have not had very positive experiences with tech support in the last year. I found them to be arrogant, rude, not solving my problems, and not interested in solving my problems."
"It would be nice to have a simplified monitoring feature for non-Java applications."
"I would like to see more default dashboards included, and maybe more possibilities in terms of customization."
"They should include more mission learning into the product and provide additional performance metrics for application learning."
"Most of the dashboards require a lot of configuration. We are not happy with the dashboard."
"This technology is considered to be older."
"The product needs more R&D to make it easier and more compatible with other software."
"The solution's technical support presents a lot of issues with too many delays."
"Customer support needs to improve by bringing in more people who are knowledgeable about the tool, as there are very few left."
"Everybody is moving away from traffic and installing agents on the application to do the job, but Micro Focus is using traditional ways to collect the traffic. They should change their architecture completely."
"I have to say that I am very disappointed with this solution. It's very heavy, and it is a nightmare to deploy and maintain."
"The diagnostics perspective, particularly in terms of the root cause analysis of failures, should be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing and licensing are very expensive."
"Purchasing through the AWS Marketplace is excellent."
"The product is superior to others, but it comes with a price tag that is often difficult to position back to clients."
"There was also some complexity in the adoption rate of it because of how costly the licensing is."
"I have not been able to observe more than 1% overhead, despite Dynatrace saying that it can be slightly higher in some situations."
"It is quite expensive for startups."
"Look at the product and the product features, not the price. Too often people look at the price and turn away. Dynatrace costs a little bit more than the other products I researched, but it can do far more."
"The licensing model is confusing in solutioning clients for the number of hosts needed to deploy."
"Not expensive."
"The price is approximately €30,000 ($35,500 USD) for the enterprise edition."
"If I compare with other vendors, other vendors are more expensive"
"Compared to other tools, OpenText Real User Monitoring is an expensive solution."
