AI-driven insights have reduced downtime and improved cross-team collaboration
We encountered some challenges while using Dynatrace. Although the initial setup was smooth, fine-tuning alert thresholds and custom metrics took some time. Another challenge was that Dynatrace charges based on host units, so we had to carefully plan our agent deployments. The licensing model is expensive. Additionally, the complexity of setup is an issue. While OneAgent and auto-discover services are powerful, the setup is more complex compared to other tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. These integrations are simple and basic, but Dynatrace setup requires more complexity based on the environment. For new users wanting to use Dynatrace, it is difficult. However, the AI-related solutions and metrics took us to the next level for identifying and fixing things. Dynatrace requires an agent for operation. OneAgent is powerful, but it is also resource-heavy. On lightweight nodes or older systems, the agent can slightly impact performance. If Dynatrace could implement a lightweight agent behavior, we could make things faster. Additionally, if Dynatrace could add a long-term retention policy so that we could store more data and find fine-grained details, that would help us. While Dynatrace managed edition supports on-premises deployment, the SaaS version depends on cloud connectivity. For highly regulated or air-gapped environments, setup and updates can be challenging. Although the initial setup is smooth, if someone wants to fine-tune it and fully understand the tool end-to-end, it could be tricky.

You can easily scale it for high message rates, but it's primarily a flow-monitoring tool rather than an APM.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"With the Agentless monitoring and ability to create custom plugins, we've been able to transform the tool not just into a great APM solution but a really good enterprise monitoring solution too."
"As an administrator for the AppMon servers, we see the benefits every day when we help business teams to figure out some of their problems, troubleshoot to root cause."
"This tool helps us gather information from all hosts and services, then cross reference the information."
"The view it provides for default analysis is very nice. The way in which it showcases how the metrics have been captured and how lucidly that they are displayed. This is a good thing to have from a technical and non-technical perspective."
"Enables me to proactively understand the user experience on our site."
"The PurePaths are valuable because that's where somebody who is a non-developer can figure out where the problem is and send appropriate PurePaths, clean charts, or even the link to the developer. The developer can then look at it and figure out exactly where the problem is, this is the piece of code that took the longest time, and then resolve it."
"Dynatrace has significantly improved our organization by providing full-stack visibility and automated root cause analysis, helping us detect and resolve issues faster, reduce downtime, and improve user experience."
"We display it on a big dashboard, allowing the teams to look at performance for each app within a group, creating a bit of competition while allowing us to see issues sooner rather than later and quickly identify correlated issues across our integrated systems and shared infrastructure."
"Very simple to use and is a very useful tool."
"Flexible environment"
"Nastel is a world-class company that has partnership amongst other positive qualities embedded into its cultural fiber."

Cons

"I would like Dynatrace to be more flexible and user-friendly."
"There are a lot of features that could be added that would make this a very useful solution, but it is getting there."
"If the user interface were made more intuitive then it would really benefit the product."
"It would be nice to get the AI piece into AppMon."
"Filters should have a “negative” option."
"Scalability-wise, on the data side, I'm really worried because they are giving only seven days data retention."
"A useful addition for known issues would be the ability to automatically perform certain activities as a first attempt to resolve issues which are creating a problem."
"The dashboard tool needs to be improved. We need more options, because the look and feel is too old-fashioned."
"Needs to quickly implement support for all variety of servers."
"Documentation"
"Quality Assurance testing for new releases need to be more thorough"

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I feel the price is good for what the product does."
"The licensing for Dynatrace is high. If you want to go for monitoring solutions, then why Dynatrace? If you have a particular budget, you can go for many other monitoring tools - apart from Dynatrace - and they can help you more and give more data than Dynatrace can. It's not worth the money that you spend for Dynatrace."
"Dynatrace is bit costly and not easily affordable."
"We asked for a three-year license, and the price was quite good."
"The product is pricey, but it is feature-rich, which is why we probably haven't looked away from it."
"Getting the first agents installed, getting information, and coverage in a initial set of systems can be done in hours and with a low cost entry point."
"It is quite costly. Dynatrace was the most expensive, compared to the other products we looked at. But it was also a lot better. If you want value for your money, Dynatrace is the way to go."
"Dynatrace is usually paid on a yearly basis."
