AI-driven insights have reduced downtime and improved cross-team collaboration
We encountered some challenges while using Dynatrace. Although the initial setup was smooth, fine-tuning alert thresholds and custom metrics took some time. Another challenge was that Dynatrace charges based on host units, so we had to carefully plan our agent deployments. The licensing model is expensive. Additionally, the complexity of setup is an issue. While OneAgent and auto-discover services are powerful, the setup is more complex compared to other tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. These integrations are simple and basic, but Dynatrace setup requires more complexity based on the environment. For new users wanting to use Dynatrace, it is difficult. However, the AI-related solutions and metrics took us to the next level for identifying and fixing things. Dynatrace requires an agent for operation. OneAgent is powerful, but it is also resource-heavy. On lightweight nodes or older systems, the agent can slightly impact performance. If Dynatrace could implement a lightweight agent behavior, we could make things faster. Additionally, if Dynatrace could add a long-term retention policy so that we could store more data and find fine-grained details, that would help us. While Dynatrace managed edition supports on-premises deployment, the SaaS version depends on cloud connectivity. For highly regulated or air-gapped environments, setup and updates can be challenging. Although the initial setup is smooth, if someone wants to fine-tune it and fully understand the tool end-to-end, it could be tricky.

Proactive monitoring boosts system reliability but requires improved protocol support and script customization
Improvements can be made to OpenText Business Process Monitoring, especially since we have faced issues with protocol support and creating scripts in past implementations. Creating a proactive request requires a specific skill set, so a template for scripts that work across various protocols should be recommended. The dashboard of OpenText Business Process Monitoring is good enough, but in my operational environment, it is not sufficient. Therefore, I have had to customize everything beyond the package, utilizing Prometheus and Grafana to render more dashboards.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We are able to get insights into our systems, which previously took us weeks to be able to detect."
"We have not had any stability issues with it at all. This has been the most stable solution that I have worked with."
"The most valuable feature is the workflow, which helps you to easily have an overview of the infrastructure that you are analyzing, without having worked with it previously."
"I think with Dynatrace, it has helped to bring value to the business because now we can speak using the same language."
"The NeoLoad plugin is awesome, and it gets results from load tests correlated with test scenarios."
"It used to take a lot of time to troubleshoot, but now, with Dynatrace, we can actually see the logs anytime we want, quickly find the problem, and it has improved performance from a time perspective."
"We setup triggers for certain critical events, and when these events happen, alert notifications are sent to the support team to take immediate action."
"It was delivered when we wanted it and has performed exceptionally well."
"Ability to monitor multiple application protocols."
"The main benefits of using OpenText Business Process Monitoring for my company include anomaly detection and proactive analysis, which enhance our monitoring capabilities."
"The tool team was sort of aware of those tools to deal with. And, that helped us to deliver the project on time."
"The solution is very good at showing users ways to use a user action on a website and to see the performance."
"What I find most valuable is that it has synthetic monitoring that you can run from different geographies and identify, as it’s more proactive monitoring than reactive monitoring, so it'll alert customers before they find out things are not working, and proactive monitoring is very helpful to most of our customers."
"The stability has been very good over the years."
"Automates processes and allows reports and statistics to improve the speed at which changes and assets are managed."
"Product allows business analysts to create the application with very little software development time needed."

Cons

"The licensing part is complicated or not transparent. It is very difficult to assess the number of licenses for a prospect. You have to do a PoC, and calculating the number of licenses for two years or three years is sometimes very difficult. It also depends on each case. There are multiple types of licenses. Sometimes, you need only one of them, and sometimes, you need all of them. This is an area for improvement."
"I was hands on in the setup of the solution. Initially, it seemed a little daunting."
"Make it easier to define applications. E.g., provide an API for applications defined by REST services."
"Dynatrace has APIs, but they are unfriendly APIs. If they were friendly like Splunk or Sumo Logic had, we might integrate that same data on a single webpage, then start showing these internally."
"The thread traceability is something that needs improvement."
"It still has a long way to go to reach that single pane of glass."
"The con of Dynatrace is that, at times, because it has so much information, it becomes difficult to see the root cause of your problem, and then you have to dig around to find the root cause."
"We have called the technical support and most of the calls are returned quickly. Some of them will be a real technical problem and then they have to reach their engineering side; the support is not able to help."
"Improvements can be made to OpenText Business Process Monitoring, especially since we have faced issues with protocol support and creating scripts in past implementations."
"It doesn't have SNMP, the standard communication protocol for sending alerts."
"Customer support is pretty average and can use some improvement."
"The solution should offer better integration with other tools from a service management perspective."
"Product documentation is lacking, and sometimes, incorrect. Having better documentation will allow business analysts and data center personnel to rely on the Micro Focus help desk less."
"Support has experienced high turnover recently due to HP acqusition of the former Mercury Interactive product."
"The product has been discontinued."
"Product documentation is lacking, and sometimes, incorrect."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is quite expensive for startups."
"The product is pricey, but it is feature-rich, which is why we probably haven't looked away from it."
"Make sure your leadership buy-in is in place. Ensure leadership understands that an APM solution is a fairly expensive, so they know what they are getting into."
"Do a PoC and see if you like it."
"You get a really well-planned out monitoring suite for the money spent."
"I have not been able to observe more than 1% overhead, despite Dynatrace saying that it can be slightly higher in some situations."
"The pricing is a little high, but still cheaper than competitors because Dynatrace at least has pay-as-you-go. Others do not. However, the pricing is confusing. I wish it was more simplified when trying to price out moving to a yearly contract."
"Dynatrace is the most expensive APM that we sell, compared to competitors' products. The license pricing could be improved. My customers pay for licensing yearly."
"On a three-year license package, it was a good deal."
