AI-driven insights have reduced downtime and improved cross-team collaboration
We encountered some challenges while using Dynatrace. Although the initial setup was smooth, fine-tuning alert thresholds and custom metrics took some time. Another challenge was that Dynatrace charges based on host units, so we had to carefully plan our agent deployments. The licensing model is expensive. Additionally, the complexity of setup is an issue. While OneAgent and auto-discover services are powerful, the setup is more complex compared to other tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. These integrations are simple and basic, but Dynatrace setup requires more complexity based on the environment. For new users wanting to use Dynatrace, it is difficult. However, the AI-related solutions and metrics took us to the next level for identifying and fixing things. Dynatrace requires an agent for operation. OneAgent is powerful, but it is also resource-heavy. On lightweight nodes or older systems, the agent can slightly impact performance. If Dynatrace could implement a lightweight agent behavior, we could make things faster. Additionally, if Dynatrace could add a long-term retention policy so that we could store more data and find fine-grained details, that would help us. While Dynatrace managed edition supports on-premises deployment, the SaaS version depends on cloud connectivity. For highly regulated or air-gapped environments, setup and updates can be challenging. Although the initial setup is smooth, if someone wants to fine-tune it and fully understand the tool end-to-end, it could be tricky.

Proactive monitoring boosts system reliability but requires improved protocol support and script customization
Improvements can be made to OpenText Business Process Monitoring, especially since we have faced issues with protocol support and creating scripts in past implementations. Creating a proactive request requires a specific skill set, so a template for scripts that work across various protocols should be recommended. The dashboard of OpenText Business Process Monitoring is good enough, but in my operational environment, it is not sufficient. Therefore, I have had to customize everything beyond the package, utilizing Prometheus and Grafana to render more dashboards.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Our customers are now able to control their infrastructure with a single tool and can easily check the connections with all components."
"It is much easier to deploy, maintain, and delivery of high value insights, which almost immediately lowers the mean time to value and resolution of issues."
"By using the APM tool for resource management and time management, we have saved a lot of time, so I would say this is a good investment that the organization has made."
"I can review behaviors, trending issues, and resolve issues before they impact our clients."
"The most valuable feature is the workflow, which helps you to easily have an overview of the infrastructure that you are analyzing, without having worked with it previously."
"This tool enables us to make intelligent, fact-based decisions faster."
"Real user monitoring is one of the best things in solution. The possibility to analyze any particular user session is wonderful."
"They have a feature that allows you to monitor the user, and we are able to create a VIP customer."
"What I find most valuable is that it has synthetic monitoring that you can run from different geographies and identify, as it’s more proactive monitoring than reactive monitoring, so it'll alert customers before they find out things are not working, and proactive monitoring is very helpful to most of our customers."
"Product allows business analysts to create the application with very little software development time needed."
"The tool team was sort of aware of those tools to deal with. And, that helped us to deliver the project on time."
"The solution is very good at showing users ways to use a user action on a website and to see the performance."
"The stability has been very good over the years."
"The main benefits of using OpenText Business Process Monitoring for my company include anomaly detection and proactive analysis, which enhance our monitoring capabilities."
"Ability to monitor multiple application protocols."
"Automates processes and allows reports and statistics to improve the speed at which changes and assets are managed."

Cons

"Richer, deeper partner channel: It needs to expand and deepen the business use cases, where their solutions can help."
"Graphically, it is not good."
"For AppMon, in order to use the rich client especially, I think you have to be somebody who is in there more often than not. It's not necessarily as intuitive as it could be."
"Working with an infrastructure team that has given me VM and is not dedicated has delayed the performance of the tool. Getting better, still working to tune to their eyes."
"The dashboard tool needs to be improved. We need more options, because the look and feel is too old-fashioned."
"Data streaming and dashboard loading can be improved to reduce dashboard latency."
"We would like to see an AI tool that detects issues with our site in real time."
"We did have some scaling issues with the DC RUM or Data Center Real User Monitoring, just with the overall volume that we monitor in a company that I used to work at."
"The solution should offer better integration with other tools from a service management perspective."
"Product documentation is lacking, and sometimes, incorrect. Having better documentation will allow business analysts and data center personnel to rely on the Micro Focus help desk less."
"The product has been discontinued."
"Improvements can be made to OpenText Business Process Monitoring, especially since we have faced issues with protocol support and creating scripts in past implementations."
"It doesn't have SNMP, the standard communication protocol for sending alerts."
"Support has experienced high turnover recently due to HP acqusition of the former Mercury Interactive product."
"Customer support is pretty average and can use some improvement."
"Product documentation is lacking, and sometimes, incorrect."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is not bad, but it could be better."
"We purchased a subscription for one year and it is an expensive solution for a large enterprise like ours."
"The pricing is a little high, but still cheaper than competitors because Dynatrace at least has pay-as-you-go. Others do not. However, the pricing is confusing. I wish it was more simplified when trying to price out moving to a yearly contract."
"The licensing for Dynatrace is high. If you want to go for monitoring solutions, then why Dynatrace? If you have a particular budget, you can go for many other monitoring tools - apart from Dynatrace - and they can help you more and give more data than Dynatrace can. It's not worth the money that you spend for Dynatrace."
"Dynatrace is still kind of an expensive solution compared to others. But I recognize that they are ahead of the competition when we do a feature by feature comparison."
"The pricing and licensing are very expensive."
"Product pricing can seem a little over complex, however this is minor and does not detract from the benefits of the solution."
"Setup cost is very low considering that it is an almost totally, automatic process."
"On a three-year license package, it was a good deal."
