AI-driven insights have reduced downtime and improved cross-team collaboration
We encountered some challenges while using Dynatrace. Although the initial setup was smooth, fine-tuning alert thresholds and custom metrics took some time. Another challenge was that Dynatrace charges based on host units, so we had to carefully plan our agent deployments. The licensing model is expensive. Additionally, the complexity of setup is an issue. While OneAgent and auto-discover services are powerful, the setup is more complex compared to other tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. These integrations are simple and basic, but Dynatrace setup requires more complexity based on the environment. For new users wanting to use Dynatrace, it is difficult. However, the AI-related solutions and metrics took us to the next level for identifying and fixing things. Dynatrace requires an agent for operation. OneAgent is powerful, but it is also resource-heavy. On lightweight nodes or older systems, the agent can slightly impact performance. If Dynatrace could implement a lightweight agent behavior, we could make things faster. Additionally, if Dynatrace could add a long-term retention policy so that we could store more data and find fine-grained details, that would help us. While Dynatrace managed edition supports on-premises deployment, the SaaS version depends on cloud connectivity. For highly regulated or air-gapped environments, setup and updates can be challenging. Although the initial setup is smooth, if someone wants to fine-tune it and fully understand the tool end-to-end, it could be tricky.

User-level monitoring with near-real-time analytics boosts service availability
The use case is about user-level monitoring and the availability of a service for a user. It's about whether the service is available, its performance, and the type of errors a user is receiving, from a user perspective The functions that Real User Monitor is intended for, which is to provide the…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The easy upgrade; the manual is so clear and understandable, it is like a walk in the park Web based dashboards to provide role dependent performance metrics Analysis engine improves the process of measurements so the end user is not bothered with the time consuming PurePaths calculations."
"It reduces time and provides detailed info, showing problem correlation, and a single point of diagnosis."
"Dynatrace shows the customer path, common errors on desktop and mobile, and allows us to achieve faster page loads."
"We were previously using AppDynamics, then we switched to Dynatrace because it has more functionality, better additional components, and better management of problems."
"We are able to see globally our end user response time tracing down to the user ID."
"Transaction flow helps to identify server health at every layer."
"Customers are looking at our site, every second, constantly. They're able to do that because, if for some reason it goes down, I can instantly get it back up, because I know what needs to be fixed. In the past, before having the tool, we were being notified by the brand, or the brand manager, "Hey, customers are complaining that our site is down." And then there was me, as a developer, trying to track down what was causing this issue. With Dynatrace, it's right there in front of me, it's a JavaScript error, or something I can narrow down."
"Dynatrace gives us and our clients information about all layers and components of their platform, including the most important starting point for us: real-time and historical end user experience."
"The Real User Monitor, with its transaction and synthetic transaction monitoring, is the typical classic in APM cases when the customer would like to do transaction monitoring. Micro Focus scores better where the underlying infrastructure management is also covered by Micro Focus tools."
"Real User Monitor has improved our productivity."
"Real User Monitor has made it easier to drill down and see how users connect to and use our website."
"The Micro Focus technical support is quite good."
"If you have an old-fashioned infrastructure with data center servers then this is a good solution for you."
"The most valuable feature is application performance monitoring."
"This solution is very reliable; it's stable."
"We use RUM and BSM and so far it has been really good at getting real user transactions from a real user monitor and then tying it to a BSM single view dashboard, where we get the whole realistic picture."

Cons

"Waiting for the session replay needs improvement."
"It would be nice if there were a way that it could be made simpler, given the complexity of the things that we're monitoring."
"It's not very scalable, we cannot add another server onto it."
"I would like to have the ability to share live data with selected third parties so that they can see how their product is performing for our company."
"SSO options are missing."
"The solution could be more seamless. The user interface could be better and they could offer more integration."
"I would say that this solution's reports are lacking a little bit, and because of this, you have to rely on API to fetch and pull data. I think they could have done a bit of a better job by providing a more user-friendly search from a reporting perspective."
"The business use case is that most people want to see how many orders came in. I'd like to be able to get data out of JavaScript tags, and capture more data. I think that would make it much more useful, rather than using Google Analytics. Instead, have one tool to capture all the stack, that would make it easy."
"One area to improve is the user interface, of course. The second one is their R&D has virtually stopped building a product roadmap."
"The diagnostics perspective, particularly in terms of the root cause analysis of failures, should be improved."
"Some issues with login errors."
"This technology is considered to be older."
"Customer support needs to improve by bringing in more people who are knowledgeable about the tool, as there are very few left."
"We would like to see support for non-Windows environments."
"One final complaint I have is that the roadmap from the vendor is not clear, which makes it less attractive to some customers."
"Real User Monitor needs to cover more protocols to provide more in-depth information. It could also be better at monitoring voice-related traffic. There is currently no visibility in that channel."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Its licensing is complicated or not transparent."
"I have not been able to observe more than 1% overhead, despite Dynatrace saying that it can be slightly higher in some situations."
"Pricing is still too expensive."
"There is time savings. People's times have been cut in half using this solution because we were previously doing a lot of that manual work. Now, it's a lot more automated, and the data is just there."
"Dynatrace is bit costly and not easily affordable."
"We have not fully been able to get the full value out of the product. It is expensive compared to other things that we have had in the past. Paying that much and not being able to get the full return on the product is a downgrade. "
"They could improve their price ranges, as there is no option for startups or testing."
"The solution is not cheap."
"The price is approximately €30,000 ($35,500 USD) for the enterprise edition."
"Compared to other tools, OpenText Real User Monitoring is an expensive solution."
"If I compare with other vendors, other vendors are more expensive"
"Not expensive."
