Enhancing database learning with AI features and Oracle compatibility but needs performance improvements
I am a lecturer, and in universities, we use EDB Postgres Advanced Server to start with databases for practical purposes. I also assist with migrations, especially when clients want to migrate from Oracle to Postgres. So, while I am not a regular user, I am involved during migrations Since the…

Offers simplicity and is cheaply priced
I haven't gone through the scalability aspect since I was using MySQL Server. I haven't worked to a high level in PostgreSQL, but with MySQL Server, I have managed clustering and partitioning. I think I haven't put much focus on PostgreSQL, so I am not sure how it behaves or how it works.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It gives us a solid, less expensive alternative to deploying with Oracle."
"The low cost and functionality allows us to save money on smaller database projects."
"I rate EDB Postgres Advanced Server's stability an eight out of ten."
"The number of indices available in Postgres is remarkable."
"I like that EDB Postgres Advanced Server scales well. A valuable feature of the solution is multi-tenancy support. It also supports JSONB."
"The product is user-friendly."
"Postgres is highly compatible with many software and programming languages. Its compatibility is excellent, covering nearly everything related to data engineering or migration."
"The feature of vector database management for AI is quite interesting and impactful."
"We managed to reduce the storage space needed to 10% of the original size, without affecting data integrity, and we significantly improved the performance."
"With the database, you can provide a multi-component at the same service with the same performance, scalability, or all those things."
"It has completely met our needs. It works, and it is robust. We haven't had any problems with what PostgreSQL does for us and the way it does it. That's why we've been using it for so long. We understand it, and it does the job."
"The initial setup is quick and easy."
"The most valuable feature is the performance."
"We are able to create many different types of jobs and items with this solution making it one of the most valuable features."
"It is easy to install and easy to manage. There is no license on it, so it is free. There is high compatibility with Oracle, and there are many tools for the migration of data from Oracle to Postgre."
"The database has excellent performance."

Cons

"There aren't specific new features we wish to add."
"The system is aging and not keeping up with the performance of new, enhanced database models."
"I would like to see improvements in the performance, especially in large-scale operations, as it currently cannot match Oracle's performance."
"I have faced performance issues in the community edition."
"The product currently fails to offer a mobile application."
"An area for improvement in EDB Postgres Advanced Server is JSONB querying. It would be nice to have even stronger JSONB support from the solution."
"The security is not very robust and the product would be much more useful with more security options."
"I find it difficult to get connectors on the tool. For example, .NET has only one free provider in PostgreSQL. I need to pay the provider if I need something more sophisticated features. Other languages like PHP and Java have good community support. We need community support for .NET."
"As PostgreSQL is an open-source product, you do have to do a bit more configuration and management yourself."
"There are several features I would like to improve that aren't working as expected. It's likely that the latest version is doing something that was missed in the previous versions. For example, the output parameters — the stored procedures — is something new in PostgreSQL that Firebird has already had for a long time."
"There could be a plugin to distribute the data on servers for the product."
"Integration with other platforms could be improved."
"The solution needs to improve the query, documentation, and JSON data functionality."
"The price could be better."
"The performance of PostgreSQL could improve."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The product is either free with community support or very inexpensive with a small yearly fee for paid support."
"Pricing is significantly lower than competing products."
"I have been working on the community edition."
"EDB Postgres Advanced Server is open source, so I don't pay for licensing."
"It is an open-source product."
"PostgreSQL is open-source, so if capable admins are available then the setup cost can be $0."
"The community version of Postgre is basically free."
"It could be much cheaper. If you would like to build an application on Amazon today, PostgreSQL is the standard database with Redshift. If you want other databases, you can add them, but PostgreSQL is the basis of everything. It's a question of money, that's it."
"It is open source. There is no licensing."
"PostgreSQL is a free and open-source database."
"It is free. There is no license on it."
"The solution requires a license."
"It is also open-source so it is free."
