Has integrated solutions and rapid recovery made management smoother and more reliable
There is the latest update from HPE regarding HPE SimpliVity. For virtualization, HPE has to depend on other manufacturers, OEMs such as VMware or Hyper-V. Recently, HPE declared the VM essential virtualization solution. In the future, if HPE integrates HPE SimpliVity with VM essential, that will be a great combination. Functionality-wise, I am totally satisfied with HPE SimpliVity, but for improvement, if HPE integrates its own virtualization solution, this combination and integration will be beneficial because this integration can be configured with the cloud-based system. A VM can be uploaded to the cloud from this, which will be advantageous for backup to other sites.

Crashed continuously, complex to deploy, and bad after-sales support - NETAPP FIXED the problems in 2022
Their after-sales support, SLA, and third-parties availability should be improved. NetApp's support is very difficult to engage. We have an SLA of onsite support within 24 hours. but they don't respect the SLA. Its stability was very bad. It has been crashing continuously. In one year, we got three crashes, which is unbelievable for an appliance that is guaranteed for 10 years without any crashes. In 2022, NetApp Italy, driven by the country manager Davide Marini, fixed all our issues and added additional computation power for free. This is a great example of customer care. They could have done it right the first time of course, but admitting the errors and putting in place such a remediation plan has been a very professional behavior.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Customers have moved to SimpliVity for ease of use, consolidation of vendors, reducing cost, improving performance, improve data protection capabilities, and even managing storage at multiple sites."
"The backup and restore features are the most valuable."
"The solution is scalable and one of the best in the market."
"Stability is pretty good. We have no complaints as it has been running seamlessly with no downtime."
"Our RPO has gone from 8 hours to 3 hours and we can go back to 6 months of datasets."
"I like SimpliVity because it can be adapted for small clients or the biggest ones. It's flexible."
"For one of our clients who needed backup capability but did not want to invest in a dedicated backup tool, SimpliVity's native backup with app consistency came in handy."
"Valuable features include ease of use, disaster recovery, and reliability."
"The most valuables features of it are the deduplication and the compaction because the ratios are much better than what we normally get on our FAS storage."
"It's simple, flexible, powerful; we've been able to move most of our workload to it and we've seen increased performance across the board."
"NetApp HCI is used for enterprise-scale hybrid cloud infrastructure and we are using the standard version."
"Simple setup and having the storage and compute right on one deployment is the most valuable aspect of this solution. They're able to get set up and ready to go and start having their DevOp team deploy to that environment."
"We went with NetApp based on the cost-effective solutions, technologies, and protocols."
"NetApp HCI solves predictability challenges with industry-leading performance capabilities that allow the granular control of every application."
"HCI definitely improved how flexible we scale, and our entrance into the cloud."
"This is a strong product and it works very well, and the processes around it continue to grow and mature."

Cons

"I have some worries about the support after the acquisition. The support was better before HPE acquired SimpliVity."
"There are some problems with support from HPE."
"We had failures out-of-the-box of our new technology along with a few bugs during the initial setup."
"Pricing and monitoring could be improved."
"Speed in catching up with VMware ESXi releases could also be slightly improved."
"It would be better if it could integrate more easily with other vendors."
"There are a lot of different components to choose from in the chassis. This could be easier by providing a standard or a base model to create and configure from."
"Single file restore capabilities and ease."
"The price of the solution is okay but could improve."
"The reason I give it a nine instead of a ten is because of the need for pre-check work. While it is simpler than most products, there is still a lot of configuration that needs to be done."
"I'd like to see some additional graphics capabilities because I'd like to look at some virtual desktop integration for CAD software."
"The problem is that it needs to be much more stable, for example, when I want to do the upgrade to 1.7 that just released, I also need to issue a ticket to the support guy in India and he asked me to deploy another mlock. There are a lot of manual steps compared with other products."
"HCI has not enabled us to consolidate workloads or break down silos and has not increased application performance. It has also not resulted in more efficient use of compute resources."
"The deployment process has room for improvement. I would like for it to be a cookie-cutter deployment."
"There are some legacy applications which still cannot be migrated. That is why we have to keep two environments: legacy and the new one. We would like to see more compatibility to move stuff."
"The vCenter keeps crashing, meaning that there is no stability in our environment."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Scaling isn't cheap"
"If we compare the price of HPE SimpliVity with other vendors that are selling the hyper-converged infrastructure, all of them are not cheap and are priced similarly. However, the price we pay and what we receive makes it a good price."
"For three years, it is $60,000 for three nodes. It is quite pricey."
"The price should be cheaper."
"Its licensing is yearly."
"The price is one of the biggest problems our customers have."
"I think it's a complete package. We buy the license with support for five years. It's a subscription, I will say, but it's included when you buy the SimpliVity solution from HPE. You have a contract with the software warranty and upgrades."
"Its price is pretty good as compared to the other solutions, but it is quite expensive if we compare it with non-HCI solutions."
"Licenses run on a yearly basis, and there aren't any additional fees other than the standard licensing fee."
"Where we lost nearly 75 percent of our infrastructure due to a malicious attack and were able to recover two and a half hours into it due to the integration, it saved us and all of our customers. Because we were able to recover so fast from the attack, the solution paid for itself right there."
"Its pricing is lower than our previous solution."
"All the licenses are included when you buy the program."
"The licensing fees are renewed annually."
"You still have to pay for the licensing for VMware and Red Hat licenses separately. It's not all inclusive at this point."
"There are the overall infrastructure costs. Even though the initial costing was higher, we calculated for year-to-year for five years. That brought us into a position where we decided, we have to go for HCI rather than having distributor systems."
"This solution reduced our maintenance costs. We were going to have to pay one to two million dollars to put in compute nodes. We are avoiding those costs."
