IT/Business Architect at a financial services firm with 51-200 employees
Lots of valuable features, especially the metamodel customization
In terms of what could be improved, we did not take the whole package with all the modules, and I think that the integration with other platforms like Office could be better. The reverse engineering of the database is already there, but in the next release I would like to see some pilot supplied with the solution in order to address any database.

Efficient documentation generation through organized model structure with a good price-performance ratio
Whenever I begin a new project with Sparx, I have to spend time training people on how to use it since it is not straightforward. Although it's a powerful product with plenty of features, it's not easy for even experienced users to find their way without guidance. This is not the most user-friendly solution.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"There are a lot of features I find valuable, but I think that the metamodel customization is one of the best features that the solution offers."
"The solution is pretty stable."
"The System Architect Product has greatly assisted the corporate strategic planning process in two areas: the simulation of scenarios for Enterprise Transformation Projects and providing a global view of Enterprise Capabilities and Functional Gaps."
"The main advantage of the solution and its most valuable aspect is the customization of the meta-model."
"We have seen ROI with this solution over the years that we have used it."
"The user interface is good. It's both clear and comprehensible. It's easy to work with."
"Large diagrams for hardware infrastructure, HA environments, Integrated Solution view, etc all help different teams to understand the scope of projects."
"Using Sparx Enterprise Architect allowed my customer to detail and make the company's IT strategy visible and accessible to all. The system provided clear roadmaps for IT development and helped to keep up-to-date documentation of systems and processes."
"The profiles and ready-made templates are an extremely helpful feature. This is one of the biggest features that I find very useful in Sparx."
"Its ability to reference and link to components from any diagram and the vast number of frameworks supported make it easy to get started with modelling."
"The features I find most valuable is the ability to create a document and then put it into a OneCare artifact, which allows me to share the visual I bring about with other communities that are not system analysts because not everyone can afford to have a copy of Enterprise Architect, and additionally the solution operates well as a whole and has very comprehensive capabilities."
"The ribbon style editor coupled with capability to manage requirements, design and delivery in the same application simplified my life tremendously."
"I tend to come back to Sparx because it is the best value for the money."
"In terms of product features, I'm very happy with the support for UML 2 diagrams, Archimate, TOGAF and the collaboration capability using a RDBMS back-end."

Cons

"It was sold separately and it is not very easy for somebody who wants to use the solution for modeling to think that you have to select specific modules in order to use the product."
"We are not happy with this product and are not planning to continue with it."
"The reverse engineering of the database is already there, but in the next release I would like to see some pilot supplied with the solution in order to address any database."
"There needs to be more information at the outset about how to use the solution and how to deploy it. The deployment process needs improvement."
"Integration with all other software, like Microsoft, to facilitate an exchange, is not great."
"This solution can be more user-friendly and easier to use, with better dashboards."
"The solution needs to better integrate with other products, like Microsoft."
"Some aspects of the user interface lack a common navigational or functional framework."
"I would rate technical support as OK. The forum was great. The actual support was only so-so."
"If you just want to create some diagrams with shapes and arrows, then use Visio."
"The documentation could be better. Where I work, we speak French and we don't speak English, so we don't have anything in French. It's perfect in English, but we need something in French."
"The solution is difficult to learn. The documentation needs a bit of improvement."
"Navigating from EA Models to Business Process Models becomes a nightmare if the repository is heavily loaded."
"The elements of the modeling sets can have better customization and visual representation. It would be great to have a mobile version."
"I think that collaboration can be better."
"Sparx is built by software tech-guys for software tech-guys. It's not an everyday architect or other office-worker mostly loved tool."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"This product has a paid license, with a yearly subscription option."
"We paid 1200 euros as a once-off cost. All add ons and integrations come at an additional cost."
"Pricing and licensing are suitable even for small companies."
"Pricing and licensing is very attractive, simple, and straightforward."
"I think our license costs roughly $1,000 a year, but I could be wrong."
"The licence has a costly upfront fee which gets you access. You have to pay an annual maintenance fee, which is less."
"The Corporate Edition, or one of the bundles, is the way to go."
"Enterprise licensing is competitive. What would be helpful if they load the pricing for consultants, you know, people who are consultants for clients. So the license is fine for end-user organizations. Still, they should consider lowering the license to support this adoption, particularly for people who are consultants like myself."
