Backup coverage has supported immutable protection and now needs a more modern, intuitive interface
IBM Storage Protect is from a previous generation of backup software. In those days, backup software was complex in setting up and complex to manage. The new software, such as Rubrik, is very easy to use and more relatable to younger engineers because its interface design is more similar to Office 365 and the newer controls and labels that we are accustomed to. The difficulty that we now have with IBM Storage Protect is that for this day and age, compared to other products that are out there, it seems complex. If we look back 15 years ago, all enterprise class backup software was complex, so IBM was not any different. However, many of these older systems, such as Commvault, still have the same complaint that they are very complex because they have tried to keep that same interface and the same way it works. This suits them, but it probably needed a complete overhaul to bring it into the ease of use that we have with modern software. However, that upgrade has not been done. IBM Storage Protect has not been upgraded into a modern platform. It still looks a legacy platform.

An affordable product that offers a reasonably good technical support
I rate the product's initial setup phase an eight on a scale of one to ten, where one is a difficult setup phase, and ten is an easy setup phase. The product's installation phase took me around two weeks. On average, it usually takes about a week or two to deploy when everything is in place. The solution is deployed on a hybrid cloud from Azure.

"IBM Spectrum Protect offers stable software and products."

"IBM Spectrum Protect has improved my organization with its total support of IBM products."
"It helps our customers protect their data, keep it long-term, and feel pretty secure about it, basically sleeping well at night."
"We use this solution as an integrated backup solution and it is integrated from the backup provider to the Nutanix solution."
"Nutanix has its own backup system known as HYCU, as well as its own virtual server."

"Nutanix can converge legacy-style rack mount servers, so it is highly scalable."
"Nutanix Mine Integrated Backup is useful for those who run an infrastructure where there might arise a need to do some transition or want to opt for digital transformation."

Cons

"Generally, the implementation of virtualization could be improved. The workflow service and so on are not working properly."
"Integration with Windows environments needs improvement. It should be more "assisted", both at the application and database level. It remains a product that fits better in Unix/Linux environments than in Windows environments, given its configuration procedures."
"I have found it more complex than some of its competitor products, but because I have worked on the product for a while, I find it fairly simple. Now, I understand how to install it well, but it would still be complex for a novice."
"We need better protection from ransomware or the ability to identify ways we can protect ourselves from ransomware. Having backups is one thing, but specifically, we need methods to recover if we have a ransomware attack."
"I would not recommend Spectrum Protect at this point."
"IBM Spectrum Protect is expensive."
"It's not a good option for smaller companies. It can be a bit expensive."
"I find the solution somewhat difficult to use with virtual environments or VMware."
"The solution's setup process should be simplified."
"This solution could be improved with regards to the hosts that integrate with the platform itself. Each of the hosts integrated with the storage and networking only provide one instance of a backup."
"The solution could be cheaper and they should include more education or marketing materials for users to understand how to use the solution."
"This solution could be improved with regards to the hosts that integrate with the platform itself. Each of the hosts integrated with the storage and networking only provide one instance of a backup."
"Nutanix is not secure enough, and it needs to be more resilient."
"I would like to see the multi-cloud improve."
"It could be cheaper."
"The pricing could be improved. It's an expensive solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is not cheap."
"There may be an advantage to going with IBM in terms of pricing. They have a pay-as-you-grow policy, so there is no need to take one license for the entire datacenter. You can start with small licenses and then grow, and pay, as you use more."
"We have capacity licensing. We use the front end. The capacity licensing is pretty okay on the licensing price. I used to use the old PVU-based licensing in the early environment, but now we use capacity-based licensing."
"The licensing fees are between $8,000 and $10,000 per year."
"Use capacity licensing. It's easier and cheaper."
"The solution is expensive."
"At scale, the consumption license (per TB) is very expensive."
"We worked our licensing into a capacity model, which is nice. Now, everything is much simpler to manage from a licensing perspective."
"While Nutanix Mine is extremely expensive for small businesses, it is a very cost-effective product for enterprise businesses."
"I rate the pricing a five out of ten because the price is average."
"Nutanix Mine Integrated Backup is fairly priced."
"On a scale of one to ten, where one is affordable or low, and ten is expensive or high, I rate the price as two."
