There were issues with performing upgrades, however, we can now plan better for the future.
The insight on availability trends (CPU, Swap & IO) function is valuable We can now plan better for the future as a result of more insights about our server farm. Service monitoring Host vs virtual instance I've used if for over two years. There were none, but there were issues with…

Central monitoring has improved outage alerts and now needs smarter detection and modern dashboards
Regarding the automated network topology and mapping feature in SolarWinds NPM, I am not satisfied with it. For static monitoring, it is acceptable. However, if it is possible, I would need a feature in SolarWinds in the future for some kind of malfunctioning detection, such as malware attacks or that type of environment. We did not have any facility to detect that in SolarWinds. I think it would be better to incorporate those types of features. Regarding customization options in SolarWinds, the ability to customize the dashboard has room for improvement. The dashboard is quite old, and we need some improvement in it. Nowadays, we have multiple tools with AI-based monitoring and web-based dashboards. SolarWinds also has a web-based dashboard, but I think there is scope for improvement in the UI. There may be other areas I would like to improve in SolarWinds NPM.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"If you need to have more insight about your data center, Copperegg is the way to go."
"We were in the need of a fast-to-deploy solution for the external monitoring of our servers, and Copperegg gave us all the needed features plus the internal and custom metrics."
"We can proactively fix historical issues, so we won't face those problems in future."
"We have completely eliminated any blind spots in the operation of our core networks, applications, and platforms."
"The most valuable features of the solution are its graphical interface and reports."
"SolarWinds is a great product that can do a lot."
"As we look to add more servers to our virtual environment and to understand the impact, the solution allows us to dig into the historical charts related to capacity planning."
"If your infrastructure is big, and requires a good kind of reporting tool, then SolarWinds fulfills all these requirements."
"Solarwinds NPM was always the one that could check most of the monitoring requirements."
"It's the best platform for IT management."

Cons

"Yes, some days the service was down and we did not find an accurate response from the company."
"There were none, but there were issues with performing upgrades."
"The solution could be more secure."
"It would be beneficial if NPM offered support for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), as currently, it does not support this and we are migrating our services there."
"The solution's customer service is not very good because the support takes too long."
"Consolidation of platforms would provide a smoother experience."
"Going through the wizard to create these new pollers is quite cumbersome if you don't understand what you're doing."
"Stability is an issue. We have installed SolarWinds (Server 2016) on a dedicated physical server and as a virtual machine in a brand new Hyper-V environment with brand new servers."
"There are some issues when trying to monitor multiple networks with the same IP ranges. The solution for this is to purchase additional modules."
"Real-time analytics is the major weakness of the SolarWinds NPM platform today. They've done a fantastic job enabling the collection of data. Users are now demanding the ability to generate their own graphs, views, and so on; all of this must be done by an admin today."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The licensing model is such that you can purchase only what you need; and then grow into the next level by paying only the difference in price and the associated maintenance costs."
"SolarWinds NPM is very expensive, and we pay ten thousand yearly."
"I believe the original setup cost was around $3500 with an annual cost of around $1200-$1500 to renew the support license. This would bring the average day-to-day cost of around $5-$6 over three years."
"I’d suggest that people be aware that licensing has tiers."
"The licensing is based on the number of nodes, interfaces, and volumes."
"Though I don't remember the price for SolarWinds NPM, its price is somewhat okay when you compare it with other tools in the market. The price isn't too high and isn't too low, so it's okay."
"Most of the licenses are perpetual, and the annual maintenance charges are not high."
"USD $15,000 annually for maintenance."
