Offers custom monitoring functionality, user-friendly interface, custom maps feature and open source
Based on my experience, there should be options for using the latest communication methods, like social media integration. Telegram is already integrated, but SMS and other alert options would be beneficial. So, integrating social media notifications into NetXMS would be a good thing. As a large company, we integrate different systems together. We'd like to see some improved functionalities for enhanced integration. For example, our incident management system isn't currently integrated with NetXMS. Ideally, we'd like the alerts generated in the monitoring system to automatically create tickets in our ticketing system, similar to how some other systems function. NetXMS doesn't offer this functionality itself because they are not an incident management or ticketing system vendor. They allow integration with other vendors, but our ticketing system isn't currently supported. So they recommend using it with any other application of our choice.

Alerting precision has reduced incident response times and improved department-level network visibility
The auto-pause sensor during the maintenance window is good without any false alerts, and it prevents me from getting flooded with alerts during planned maintenance, helping department heads understand their own network usage better. It has reduced incident response time by giving clearer ownership of each alert, ensuring alerts go to the proper recipient. SNMP testers and auto-pause are among the best features of PRTG Network Monitor, which is particularly useful for different departments such as HR and finance, where alerts can be filtered accordingly. The alerting features and dashboard of PRTG Network Monitor are very helpful, especially in our industry. However, the dashboard can look cluttered on smaller screens, which is one negative aspect. PRTG Network Monitor has impacted us positively; we have stopped getting flooded with alerts during planned maintenance or unplanned outages. Compared to others, this gives specific alerts very quickly and helps department heads understand their own network usage better, thus reducing incident response time so that each alert has clear ownership.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We have a large network spanning over 1000 kilometers. NetXMS provides visibility and sends alerts. Typically, most monitoring systems monitor every 60 seconds, but NetXMS allows us to adjust this. For critical links, we can set it to check every second. For our high-priority financial customers, we monitor every second. So, every three seconds, we receive another email and a Telegram alert. This helps us meet our SLAs (Service Level Agreements) with our high-priority customers."
"The real-time monitoring and alerting are its most valuable features."
"PRTG Network Monitor helped us detect the failing RAID controller before it completely collapsed, allowing us to avoid potential data loss."
"The alerting is the most valuable feature. I also like the iPhone app. I get alerts in an email on the iPhone app."
"Over the approximately two years that the company has been using this product, it has been very stable."
"To perform your analyses with this solution is easier."
"If you're looking for a cost effective software I’d suggest this product."
"Speed of deployment is one of the most valuable features."
"The reliability of the solution means we are doing less work trying to figure out issues and optimize systems, as it is already supplying us with the information that we need."

Cons

"Based on my experience, there should be options for using the latest communication methods, like social media integration. Telegram is already integrated, but SMS and other alert options would be beneficial. So, integrating social media notifications into NetXMS would be a good thing."
"Dashboards can look cluttered on smaller screens, and the UI can feel crowded when there are hundreds of sensors in one group."
"In the next release, PRTG Network Monitor should add a backup solution."
"I would like a more straightforward ability to create dashboards and maps. The network maps should be a bit more flexibility in the GUI to do what we need to do."
"I wouldn't mind better categories for the sensors. When I go to add a new sensor for a new device, there are some categories in there already, and they can be filtered out, but there's quite a large pool of sensors... When I want to go in and find something quite specific, I have got to scroll down and scroll down to find what I'm actually looking for,"
"Once you start going above 5000 sensors, things do start to get a bit shaky. There are some best practice out there that you will need to adopt and be aware of."
"Sometimes the error messages are too vague and don't directly tell me what went wrong."
"There is room for improvement in this solution for the performance and third-party monitoring protocols. They need to be updated to the latest ones."
"We would like more cloud native sensors for AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc. A lot of businesses are moving in that direction, so having something where we can pull performance stats out of these cloud services would be great for us."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Since it's open-source, there are obviously no licensing fees. There are additional operational costs, like the cost of hosting it somewhere."
"The pricing is reasonable for the features provided."
"We have an unlimited perpetual license, so we just pay support costs and it can scale throughout the organization."
"The pricing for PRTG in our case is reasonable because we have a lot of applications to monitor within PRTG. It is not that expensive."
"The pricing is not too bad. It's not massively expensive, and the ability to upscale or even downscale licenses every year is brilliant for us."
"The price of PRTG Network Monitor is more expensive than other solutions, such as OP Network Manager."
"When you buy PRTG, everything comes in one bundle. Licensing is very easy."
"Cost was a factor when selecting this solution, but it just did everything we wanted it to do."
"The price is actually on the cheaper side. If you're going with the unlimited license code, it's very cheap compared to competitors unless you're going for something free, like Zabbix. But you get what you pay for, and it doesn't have the full suite of products or tools like SolarWinds or a ScienceLogic."
