Generating audit evidence effortlessly saves time and money
OpenText ALM Octane is a new product with full development ongoing, where new ideas are launched regularly. Its ability to generate audit evidence with a single click is a significant advantage, as it saves considerable time and money compared to manual processes. This efficiency is especially valuable for audits required by financial regulators.

It doesn't allow you to connect to multiple different bug tracking tools at the same time. This is not an issue if you only have one bug tracker but we can potentially use different tools for different projects. As an example, if you connect PractiTest to Jira for one project, that's the one you have to use for all projects. We had a requirement to connect with Jira for one project, and a different tool for another, project but it was unable to accommodate that unfortunately. I would therefore like to see it easier to integrate with bug tracking tools at project level which would give each project the opportunity to use a different bug tracker if required.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is a very stable solution. Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"We looked at all the market-leading tools, but we did not find anything quite as comprehensive as ALM Octane. When I say comprehensive, it's not just a single tool for Agile planning, backlog management release, sprint planning, etc., but it also has a built-in, comprehensive quality management module. It also has pipelines where we can hook up with our DevOps ecosystem/toolchain."
"There are a lot of predefined reports. We can attach additional reports for users, like who worked on what defect and when, as well as what is the status of the release compared to the previous release. It is really endless. All the data is really linked together. Then, if all the data is linked together, there is an option to prepare reports out of it. We are very impressed with its reporting capabilities."
"It helps us go to the true DevOps model, which means we can do shorter cycle times, go from releasing every month to every day, and it has a nice clean interface that people don't mind using while integrating into the developers IDEs so everybody gets to work in the tool they want to work in."
"Octane has reduced manual testing time in our organization."
"Just jump in, go ahead."
"The most valuable feature is CI/CD integration, and it is a good fit into the Agile lifecycle."
"If you want to integrate your business requirements with your testing and defect-management tracking, it works beautifully."
"In addition, we found PractiTest very user-friendly and customizable."
"This is a good solution for a global transnational company."
"PractiTest gives us the opportunity to control the testing process efficiently and saves us a lot of time that we had to spend while using other tools."
"The most valuable feature is the way the libraries are structured so that they were not folder driven."
"Technical support of PractiTest is awesome. They are always ready to help in any time zone, which makes them stand out from others."
"Helped organise the manual test cases so they were documented correctly, which was invaluable as it allowed for reviewing and improving of test scripts so they could be followed by a number of different people which helped with resourcing."
"Converting a couple of these test plans into PractiTest was amazing and made a world of difference."
"Since we started using this product, our organization's testing functionality has really improved."

Cons

"Updating items, sorting, bulk updates—these things could have a bit more flexibility, but it's still possible to do them."
"When I manage projects that are being created in ALM, I have a standard template, but I don't have a template for them in Octane. I literally have to create the project from the ground up every time, which for an administrator, is a nightmare solution"
"Pricing is the weakest point. It is expensive, but the tool has plenty of features."
"I have some problems with the way they license things because HPE is a hardware-come-software organization."
"The reporting side of ALM Octane could do with a few areas of improvement. There is not enough flexibility in the way that we can cut up the data to report on certain things."
"I haven't been impressed with the reporting from a requirements matrix and a traceability perspective."
"There is an opportunity for them to do a little more with the dashboarding. We still feel that HPE Quality Center/HPE ALM reporting is very powerful. We talked with R&D, and there are some things on their roadmap, but at the same time, their strategy is to connect Octane with visualization tools such as Power BI."
"I would like to see the mobile testing improved so that we can simply select a mobile device, then specify what parameters we want, and the testing will be run based on that."
"Needs to improve adding the ability to run tests multiple times and setting different parameters."
"There are some features that I would like added: an option to export a part of tests with steps."
"It doesn't allow you to connect to multiple different bug tracking tools at the same time."
"It does not offer server installation, only software as a service."
"PractiTest practically requires a lot of sandboxing, demos with their team, and online tutorials."
"Yes, there are times when server is very slow in response."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I rate the product price an eight on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive. The product is neither cheap nor expensive."
"It's expensive. HPE products, and now Micro Focus, have always been expensive. The license is not cheap, and it will always be a challenge, particularly for small organizations like ours."
"The senior management of my company handles the purchases of the solution. However, the price per developer was a major reason we switched from Jira. Apart from the complexity and the support, the price was a major reason that a team of 20 people unanimously decided that we would prefer to go with Micro Focus ALM Octane rather than Jira. The senior management had seen some benefit in it and they preferred it over Jira because the per developer cost was less and the support was superior."
"The solution has reduced our testing costs."
"It will be as expensive as ALM.NET, if not more expensive. But here's a good tip: If you have ALM.NET, you are able to share your licenses from ALM.NET to Octane. You just have to define a dedicated number of licenses on ALM.NET and then you can share them with ALM Octane, with some configuration effort. This is something that you have to take into account, that there is a possibility of such license sharing that could decrease your costs. Compared to open-source tools, the price the ALM Octane is definitely higher, in terms of the licensing cost."
"The comparison is always with Jira, so the pricing of Octane is a bit on the higher side. But if you look at what you have to add to Jira, on the plug-in side, to have the same abilities you have with Octane, you're more or less even, or even ahead with Octane."
"It's pretty pricey, one of the most expensive ones on the market... The value depends on if you use all the features that it has. It comes with a lot of features. The difference between the license structure of ALM and Octane versus JIRA, is that you get everything with ALM and Octane... For JIRA, you buy the pieces one piece at a time."
"There is a conversion fee for changing licenses."
"Pricing is probably in the middle, it's not the cheapest but it's not the most expensive."
