Veritas NetBackup and Oracle Data Guard are both strong contenders in the data protection solutions category. Veritas NetBackup is noted for its ease of use and customer support, while Oracle Data Guard stands out for its advanced disaster recovery features, which users believe justify its higher price.
Features: Veritas NetBackup is known for comprehensive backup and recovery options, data deduplication, and support for various environments. Oracle Data Guard is recognized for its real-time data protection, disaster recovery, and high availability features.
Room for Improvement: Veritas NetBackup users request a more intuitive configuration process, faster support service, and better documentation. Oracle Data Guard users suggest improvements in integration with non-Oracle environments, a more streamlined setup process, and enhanced compatibility features.
Ease of Deployment and Customer Service: Veritas NetBackup users find the deployment process relatively straightforward but desire improved documentation and customer support. Oracle Data Guard deployment is more complex, requiring specialized knowledge, but its customer service is rated highly.
Pricing and ROI: Veritas NetBackup is noted for reasonable setup costs and good ROI, making it a cost-effective solution. Oracle Data Guard has higher initial costs, but users believe the investment is justified by its exceptional disaster recovery capabilities and long-term benefits.
It is suitable for our nature of business because data is very critical, and we cannot compromise on backup.
Oracle has the best support and a great knowledge center with a lot of accessible material for users and administrators.
The support from Veritas NetBackup is very good.
The customer support is very poor.
The technical support from Veritas is rated an eight, as the local partners are good and support us.
I feel that if you can keep it at least two or three levels back or forward with backward compatibility available, it would help people use the old disk storage and get more storage space.
The size of the catalog was an issue, but it was more about outgrowing our own architecture than a problem with Veritas NetBackup itself.
For the stability of Oracle Data Guard, I would rate it as the best.
In the last 10 years, I have never faced a single incident regarding stability with Veritas NetBackup.
Veritas NetBackup performs well in terms of stability.
It could benefit from more automated features that notify via email if the disaster recovery or primary side fails.
Support tickets take too long to be solved and the quality of engineers they have for support has lately become lacking.
From security concerns regarding what I would improve about Veritas NetBackup, I think you need to look into this because we found only one encryption option available, which is not that very strong.
We would really appreciate if Veritas offers products by which we can secure our backups against these ransomware attacks.
The simple Data Guard is free.
I would rate pricing for Veritas NetBackup around six, as it is neither high nor low.
My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing is that the appliance licensing is a bit tricky and a bit expensive, especially when I have to license the hardware and the software;
Active Data Guard is the most valuable feature. We use the secondary side for reporting purposes, which reduces the load on the primary side.
In my opinion, the main benefits Veritas NetBackup provides are that it is a unified platform where we can integrate all the requirements such as online backup, offline backup, and virtualization backup in one single platform, although my only concern is the licensing structure.
The measurable outcomes and feedback I have seen from my customers after deploying Veritas NetBackup include the peace of mind CIOs and the people dealing with business continuity receive due to the reliability that it provides to them; it really gives them a lot of comfort and they can sleep well.
Although we do not utilize its deduplication technology or cloud integration, we can trigger storage actions with NetBackup.

Oracle Data Guard ensures high availability, data protection, and disaster recovery for enterprise data. Data Guard provides a comprehensive set of services that create, maintain, manage, and monitor one or more standby databases to enable production Oracle databases to survive disasters and data corruptions. Data Guard can be used with traditional backup, restoration, and cluster techniques to provide a high level of data protection and data availability.
Veritas NetBackup is an enterprise-grade backup and recovery software solution. NetBackup securely restores and backs up files, raw partitions, and directories on a server known as a media server. A server protected by NetBackup is referred to as a NetBackup client. During the backup process, the NetBackup client sends the data through the network to the NetBackup media server, which chooses the appropriate storage media as the backup point.
Veritas NetBackup is a trusted enterprise backup solution that integrates with many of today’s popular databases, such as Microsoft SQL, Oracle, Linux, Unix, and Microsoft operating systems. The solution is able to backup data to tape, disc, and public clouds and keeps the popular Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware hypervisors safe and secure.

Reviews from Real Users
Mahdi B., Solution Architect and IT Consultant at Merdasco - Rayan Merdas Data Processing, says, “Veritas integrates well with the cloud, all databases, all operating systems, all hardware, and all software. Veritas also has solid malware and ransomware protection features. From time to time, we face a new kind of attack, and Veritas has always proven to be the best protection solution for some of my customers. Our customers who have faced ransomware attacks were able to recover their data in less than one day without any stress. Veritas is ransomware resilient and because of its implementation, it is not dependent on the operating system to work. Most of the functions of the Veritas software are isolated from the operating system and it's not dependent on the operating systems involved. This is very important. When some of our operating systems are infected by a virus, Veritas still works perfectly and protects our data. This feature is very well implemented in Veritas NetBackup.”
A PeerSpot user who is a General Manager at a comms service provider relates, “Veritas enterprise has many agents who perform the backup, whether it is a consistent backup or recorded backup. The solution has everything from the snapshot to the multiple database agents.”
Mir-Ali, Infrastructure Manager - Oracle SCM at a financial services firm, shares, “It covers all kinds of different architectures. Plus, it's very user-friendly and it is very reliable. Reliability is the most important thing because once the backup is done, if it is successful, then we're sure that it was successful and we will be able to restore it.”
