A mature backup solution, with many features, and great support
Veritas NetBackup is the first line of defense when disaster strikes. Before performing disaster recovery, we must have a good backup of our image that is also protected from ransomware. This way, we have a golden image that is resilient to ransomware attacks. We saw the benefits of Veritas NetBackup within the first three months.
Ahmed Handal - PeerSpot reviewer
Enhanced data retention and recovery with robust backup features
The Oracle Agent and Oracle RAC support are valuable features; they are crucial for taking backups and cloning applications. NetBackup Appliance has many features. Backup Exec is a great product as well. NetBackup is well-developed with strong features, including deduplication technology, which allows us to retain backups for longer periods—exceeding our expectations by keeping backups for almost a month. It's effective for data recovery and capable of handling large-scale data recoveries. It is very stable and keeps applications secure. However, the AI integration is not yet tested.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Veritas NetBackup is very stable and scales out very well."
"Its ability to cover a large spectrum of products and operating systems is invaluable. We evaluated other products but always found certain limitations like some products had only intel-based virtualization, while others had power servers."
"Good graphical user interface. It's easy to create policies and to do installs."
"Veritas NetBackup is very user-friendly and has some good quick recovery features."
"The backup speed is extremely high and the simplicity of NetBackup is commendable."
"Includes snapshots and multiple database agents."
"I like NetBackup's anomaly detection and Linux storage features."
"The client side deduplication reduces the backup window."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is that it can be used in many different kinds of systems."
"The solution has a very easy-to-navigate user interface."
"It is easy to use and the performance is good."
"The solution is very scalable."
"The intelligent policies feature is used in order to protect the VMware infrastructure. One of the things that makes a big difference for our company is the usage of these intelligence policies. The system automatically provides extra protection for any VMware server application or service. From a backup administrator's point of view, this is what we call peace of mind. It reduces the workload and therefore reduces resources needed from the company."
"The policy-based backup feature is very helpful."
"The tool is easy to use, stable, and performs well, but it depends on the environment where it is deployed. It is leaning more toward huge enterprises where it is positioned. It needs to be as easy as others but addresses more complex requirements."
"The product enables me to recover the information of the appliances in the organization."

Cons

"In the next release, I would like to have a better way to protect against ransomware attacks and a better way of logging issues where you don't have to enable the verbose logging to capture the problems."
"There is a big change in Veritas. In the past, we could easily change servers or appliances and continue working by restoring the catalog. We could change servers from Linux to Linux or Linux to Solaris and perform catalog restores to continue working. But with the new version, we are forced to engage Veritas' professional services, which is too expensive."
"Some of the hardware is out of support."
"Improvements can be made to the service by providing better and more competitive ratios on data backups. The functionality for backups is there with Veritas, but I would like to see them optimize and enhance this feature more."
"There could be granular control over metadata components, specifically in the context of JSON data for the product."
"We have issues reaching them during some hours, and we need to escalate through several levels to get a resolution. Sometimes tickets stay open for days."
"Its integration with Nutanix and technical support can be improved."
"We faced so many backup configuration issues. And from the Veritas side, they couldn't fix that issue. So we started from scratch, purchased everything, and then we configured everything. Therefore, the support could be better."
"I contacted their support once, and the process was slow, which discouraged further contact."
"It's an expensive solution."
"Veritas NetBackup Appliance could improve the configuration, it could be more user-friendly."
"Our main challenge was deciding on the right capacity for expansion, but once we settled on two NAS servers with sixteen TB, things have been smooth."
"They could simplify the process of installing, and provide more space for data during the process."
"I would like to see a product that requires less expertise to manage it."
"The scalability isn't great. Every time you want to add storage, you can't just add a little bit, you need to add a lot."
"Veeam has a verification action, which is good."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"If you want to have more scalability you have to purchase more licenses. The license is annually and there are a lot of different licensing depending on the number of terabytes needed. It is not based on per-user, core, or servers. You can backup anything you want using the purchased terabyte space."
"The pricing, of course, can always be better."
"Pricing is expensive, so it could be lower."
"The price of NetBackup is okay. I think it's a little bit expensive but manageable. It has a lot of features, and the backup is better than most applications, so I think the price is competitive."
"It is slightly more expensive than Commvault, but it is pretty much the same. It is an enterprise solution, so it scales quite well. It has a lot of features. So, you pay for what you get. It is not cheap, but it is fit for the purpose."
"It is reasonably priced."
"There is a license required for this solution and it is priced based upon the data used."
"Most people have felt this solution was somewhat expensive."
"The price of Veritas NetBackup Appliance is competitive. There are different models of Veritas NetBackup Appliance, such as perpetual licenses and subscriptions. Having the choice is good."
"On a scale of one to ten, where one is a high price and ten is a low price, I rate the pricing a nine."
"Renewing subscriptions for appliance support is costly."
"It costs more to license support for this solution, compared to others."
"Appliances do not come cheaply."
"We pay annually. It is a huge figure for us."
"The licensing costs for this solution are very high."
"Veritas NetBackup Appliance is priced well compared to other solutions."
