Useful web filtering, beneficial remote access, and straightforward setup
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are remote access, web filtering, and IPS."
  • "Fortinet FortiGate could improve by having more capabilities for troubleshooting VPN connections. For example, I do get some feedback about the current status, but I could use some history and logging of important events. The information is logged in our Syslog server, but I could use that information from the device. If they could provide a GUI to have some more insight on what's going with my VPN would be useful."
  • "Fortinet FortiGate could improve by having more capabilities for troubleshooting VPN connections."

What is our primary use case?

I am using Fortinet FortiGate as a firewall.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are remote access, web filtering, and IPS.

What needs improvement?

Fortinet FortiGate could improve by having more capabilities for troubleshooting VPN connections. For example, I do get some feedback about the current status, but I could use some history and logging of important events. The information is logged in our Syslog server, but I could use that information from the device. If they could provide a GUI to have some more insight on what's going with my VPN would be useful.

The way Fortinet FortiGate handles the phase two connection of a VPN setup could be better. For example, if I have to make a phase two traffic selector input, I cannot add more ports. For example, on a specific IP address pair, if I have an IP address pair source and destination, then I can only add one port. I'm not sure if I can do that through the command line, but on the GUI, I cannot, and this is a problem. I have to select another IP address pair to allow another port and this means new traffic selectors and a new set of tunnels. This causes more tunnels to need troubleshooting.

I would like to be able to pass more diverse information through the same tunnel, and it doesn't seem to be possible if you want to limit the traffic through the tunnel and not allow all protocols between the same IP address pair. If we want to limit the ports, then I find there is a problem.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Fortinet FortiGate for approximately a year and a half.

How are customer service and support?

We have a contract with a Fortinet partner, and they're very good at providing support. We don't have the communication directly with Fortinet.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have previously used a Cisco firewall, the 5520 model. It was not a next-generation firewall and did not have IPS integrated, and it was quite difficult to manage and to find features and implement them. Fortinet FortiGate is very good at this.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Fortinet FortiGate is straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I do not have first-hand experience with the rice of Fortinet FortiGate, but I have heard the price was reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Fortinet FortiGate a ten out of ten.

Complete, stable, and easy to use
Pros and Cons
  • "I like several features that this product has, such as antivirus and internet navigation inspection, and it is also simple to use."
  • "It is very expensive, and their support is not very good. I hope that their technical support will be better in the future."

What is our primary use case?

I use FortiGate for perimeter security, web filtering, and antivirus purposes.

I use two different models. I use 90D and 200E.

What is most valuable?

I like several features that this product has, such as antivirus and internet navigation inspection. It is also simple to use.

What needs improvement?

It is very expensive, and their support is not very good. I hope that their technical support will be better in the future.

In terms of new features, it is a complete product. I don't expect any new features.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable.

How are customer service and support?

Their support is not very good for such an expensive product. I expect better support. You can find a lot of documentation on Fortinet's website, but their technical support is not very good.

How was the initial setup?

It is easy to deploy and use. It didn't take more than a day.

What about the implementation team?

We deployed it ourselves. We have our own team. There are three people in our organization who directly use this product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is expensive. You need to pay for the subscription every year, which is very expensive. The subscription includes technical support and hardware exchange in case of failure.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate it an eight out of 10.

Secure, good integration, and responsive technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "FortiGate has a very strong unified threat management system."
  • "Overall, this is a very good solution and in fact, a good starting point for a broader cyber security approach for the business."
  • "If they could extend their fabric towards other vendor environments for integration, that would be great."
  • "I would like to see integration into other systems."

What is our primary use case?

We are a system integrator and Fortinet FortiGate is one of the products that we have implemented for our clients.

It is primarily used for VPN and remote access. More recently, we have been using it for SD-WAN.

How has it helped my organization?

This is a versatile solution and with it, we can offer our customers multiple functionalities. The Fortinet fabric goes across the entire enterprise.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the security and the integration with the entire Fortinet product line, from access points to switching.

FortiGate has a very strong unified threat management system.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see integration into other systems. That would be really great for me. The fabric works well only if you're using other Fortinet devices, but they're not exactly the best in terms of switching or access points. If they could extend their fabric towards other vendor environments for integration, that would be great.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Fortinet FortiGate for the past few years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a very stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Fortinet FortiGate is very scalable.

We have implemented it for 13 or 14 customers.

How are customer service and support?

I am familiar with technical support and they're very responsible. I haven't had any issues with them so far.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. The length of time required for deployment depends on the customer's environment and use cases.

What about the implementation team?

We handle the deployment and maintenance of this product for our customers. We use the Fortinet tools, such as FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer to maintain it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing is usually on a three-year period.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, this is a very good solution and in fact, a good starting point for a broader cyber security approach for the business.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Pros and Cons
  • "I like that you are able to manage FortiGate from the FortiManager to create a more centralized environment."

  • "The solution's framework needs to be frequently updated in order to have a stable solution."

What is our primary use case?

We have several sites spread geographically across Latin America and Asia that use FortiGate. Some of them are unable to support cloud services so we have deployed it on-premise in order to provide ourselves with a fast and secure network.

What is most valuable?

What needs improvement?

The solution's framework needs to be frequently updated in order to have a stable solution.

We have been using this solution for a little over one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution is you are able to effectively maintain the framework.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable solution. We have about six thousand users and have plans to increase.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

My company used Blue Coat and Zscaler in the past but I am unsure why they switched.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was not 100% straightforward, but it was also not too complicated. You have the choice to use templates or design your own so deployment length will be dependent on that.

What other advice do I have?

This is a great solution for companies spread across Latin America and Asia.

I would rate this a seven out of ten.

Reliable, good support, and scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "I have found Fortinet FortiGate to be scalable."
  • "The main reason we chose Fortinet FortiGate was that the price was better than the competition."
  • "Fortinet FortiGate needs to improve to be on par with its competitors, such as Palo Alto and Sophos. They are the market leaders. Fortinet FortiGate needs to improve its capabilities. However, we are happy with Fortinet FortiGate."

What is our primary use case?

We use Fortinet FortiGate as a transparent firewall, it is covering the LAN. Whereas, I have a Cisco firewall, which is covering the internet outside. We have two layers of security. FortiGate focuses on the LAN traffic, which is outgoing from the servers in the LAN.

What needs improvement?

Fortinet FortiGate needs to improve to be on par with its competitors, such as Palo Alto and Sophos. They are the market leaders. Fortinet FortiGate needs to improve its capabilities. However, we are happy with Fortinet FortiGate.

Fortinet FortiGate should provide firewall certifications training for NSE 1, 2, and 3.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Fortinet FortiGate for approximately four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Fortinet FortiGate is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have found Fortinet FortiGate to be scalable.

How are customer service and support?

We were satisfied with the technical support from Fortinet FortiGate.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The main reason we chose Fortinet FortiGate was that the price was better than the competition.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated many other firewall vendors, such as Juniper, Sophos, Palo Alto. and SonicWall.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend to everyone that wants to implement Fortinet FortiGate to always have a support contract.

I rate Fortinet FortiGate an eight out of ten.

I do not give a score of ten to any vendor because there is always room for improvement.

Scalable and stable tool for securing networks, with good SD-WAN, VPN, and URL filtering functions
Pros and Cons
  • "The stability and scalability of this solution are satisfactory. Its SD-WAN, VPN, and URL filtering features are very useful."
  • "The features I found most valuable in Fortinet FortiGate include their SD-WAN features and their VPN; they are good and very useful, and my remote user and I are using them all the time."
  • "Pricing for it is a bit high. It could be cheaper."

What is our primary use case?

I use Fortinet FortiGate to secure the network.

What is most valuable?

The features I found most valuable in Fortinet FortiGate include their SD-WAN features and their VPN. They are good and very useful. My remote user and I are using them all the time. The URL filter is also good.

For how long have I used the solution?

I started using Fortinet FortiGate five years ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I'm satisfied about the stability of this solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of Fortinet FortiGate is good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of this solution wasn't complex at all.

What about the implementation team?

This solution was implemented in-house. I was the one who implemented it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing for Fortinet FortiGate is on a yearly basis. Pricing for it is a bit high. It could be cheaper.

What other advice do I have?

Deployment of Fortinet FortiGate took one to two days, because I needed time to put my existing environment and what we have, and what we intended to do with our network, to convert it into the Fortinet FortiGate system.

We were on another platform which was a concurrent platform and it wasn't a good one, and it was our first time to go on Fortinet FortiGate, so we had an issue and it took me a few days to deploy.

Maintenance of this solution requires two people. The number of users of Fortinet FortiGate in our organization depends on whether it's direct or indirect. If indirect, it will be all the users we have in the organization, but if it's direct, it could be just the administrator. If indirectly, it'll be a hundred users on our actual site, and 2000 to 3000 users on the other site, all done remotely.

I didn't have to contact Fortinet's technical support, so I can't evaluate their level of responsiveness. I was able to make all the configurations I wanted, without needing to contact support. This solution is good for me.

I'm rating Fortinet FortiGate an eight out of ten.

I'm recommending this solution to be deployed for a new user. I'm really happy with it.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
