Easy to set up, with good scalability and the ability to keep data in specific regions
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's scalability is very, very good. It's one of the most important aspects for us."
  • "The solution's scalability is very, very good; it's widely acknowledged as an excellent product throughout the industry, and there is a lot of knowledge about it in the Netherlands, making it very easy to find consultancy and employees who can help us with its modern architecture."
  • "While the solution is flexible, sometimes this works against the user."
  • "While the solution is flexible, sometimes this works against the user."

What is most valuable?

The solution's scalability is very, very good. It's one of the most important aspects for us.

We really need our data to stay in Western Europe. As an insurance company, it's important for our business. Microsoft can guarantee that it stays in Western Europe. That way, data is not processed anywhere else.

It's widely acknowledged as an excellent product throughout the industry. There's a lot of knowledge about it in the Netherlands as well. It makes it very easy to find a consultancy and also employees who can help us with its modern architecture.

The initial setup is easy. You don't need extensive training. It's an intuitive process.

What needs improvement?

What I would like to see is a possibility for time travel on the data. For instance, a financial department would like to do an analysis of the data set as it was for the first of the month while another department wants to run the analysis about how things went yesterday or last week. They have different starting points for the queries. I've seen Snowflake handle tasks such as these. It's got a feature called time shuffling, which can show me what's there on a certain variety of dates. It's very convenient.

It would be great if we could query the data of the day as well as in the data warehouse.

They should have scalable memory processor options for the data warehouse.

While the solution is flexible, sometimes this works against the user.

For how long have I used the solution?

We're new to the solution. We started using it last year around April or May. It's been less than 12 months so far.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. It's online. That means you can scale it online and can stop the database to change the scaling of it.

How are customer service and support?

We've had a few calls with technical support. They were very helpful and responsive. We have been satisfied with their level of support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward. It's not overly complex. A company shouldn't have any issues with the initial setup or implementation. You don't need deep technical insights to have training.

You can create a floor space in an hour. That's no problem. Afterward, you have to work with the data and do a few more things in terms of configuration, however, it's not hard.

What other advice do I have?

We are using the latest version of the solution.

I would rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

I would recommend Synapse, however, it depends on which industry an organization is working in. It can be complex, and often, you have to choose between several tools. They're all able to do the same job, they're just more industry-specific in some cases.

If you want to transform your data, you can choose between the database, data factory, and SQL, and even other tools.

This means it is very flexible, however, it also makes it difficult to administer. It's not that one of these sources is harder per se. It's more about what is the best for the job. Sometimes you create something and it doesn't perform and you have to start from scratch.

Good scalability and stability but needs user training
Pros and Cons
  • "The stability is pretty good."
  • "When connecting one project to the other, especially when it's handled by the same project director, the possibility of linking one spreadsheet to the other has been useful."
  • "The macro functions, though useful, are not totally user-friendly. Some people have difficulties in learning them."
  • "The macro functions, though useful, are not totally user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

We are using it internally and afterward some of the outcomes are made public, either to customers or in different projects.

It's mainly for preparing internal documents when we use Word. Otherwise, we use it for externally or for a lot of PowerPoint and Excel for budget purposes. Being a small company, we don't need a very sophisticated software solution, so with an Excel spreadsheet, we can handle the different budget of different projects simultaneously.

How has it helped my organization?

When connecting one project to the other, especially when it's handled by the same project director, the possibility of linking one spreadsheet to the other has been useful. Also, when using a Word document and making a link to another document based on an Excel spreadsheet, that's very useful. It's also great that we can interrelate one document to the other and sometimes one project to the other.

What is most valuable?

The macro functions of Excel are very useful.

The stability is pretty good.

The solution has the potential to scale.

What needs improvement?

The macro functions, though useful, are not totally user-friendly. Some people have difficulties in learning them.

If the project keeps growing we will need to link some of the documents to the data warehouse. However, at that time, I'm not sure about the possibility of keeping the same systems that we are using right now. We may need some kind of migration. I cannot say for sure, as I am not an expert. We'll need advice on that.

The initial setup is not straightforward.

The solutions not user-friendly and does require training of some sort.

The solution requires a lot of the memory of the different devices.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for a while. We use it pretty much every day and have used it over the past 12 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

My intention is to increase productivity. As long as a project can still be handled the way they are, we will keep using the current system. If we see a better alternative with better productivity achievement, we will most probably think about migration. For now, we find it to be stable and acceptable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We do plan to increase usage and we may hire a consultant to help with an expansion in a few months. This will likely happen, however, anything can change in terms of the business and the larger industry.

Scalability is good. I foresee scalability in terms of the possibility of using more features and the only difficult thing that I see already is the macros of the Excel spreadsheets. I also know that it has a good opportunity for scalability, in terms of the more complex tasks that can be achieved.

Currently, we have ten people on the solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

We use an outsourcing service for technical support. We've been satisfied with their level of service.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We haven't used a different product. We've always used Microsoft.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is complex. It's not straightforward.

In many ways, implementation is a never-ending process, as there are always things to improve. In a few months, most of our people are familiar with the product and have a good sense of the basics, however, there's always more to do.

What about the implementation team?

There was actually one consultant at the beginning of the project. We will also definitely need someone for future migration. However, it's not something that we are considering at present. It's something we'll need to do probably in the next few months. It will depend on the growth of the business.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing is okay. There might be a few extra fees in addition to the standard license.

What other advice do I have?

I'm just an end-user and customer.

I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten.

I'd rate them higher if they could make it more user-friendly in terms of those more sophisticated capabilities that the system offers. Also, the training requires long hours. That's something difficult to organize when people have to be allocated to specific training sessions, instead of being on the projects. There's a kind of complex way of balancing the possibility of some people using the more sophisticated solutions and getting trained.

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution on our servers for analytics.

What is most valuable?

We have found that it is easy to develop and to do the analytics in the modules of data.

What needs improvement?

More integration is needed to improve the product for the future. There needs to be more flexibility when developing applications with this product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have three to four people using the product.

Built-in pipelines, with responsive and committed support, but needs better pipeline security
Pros and Cons
  • "I think the most valuable component is that pipelines are built into it and then the feature that you can mirror a cosmos BB for analytics."
  • "It's come a long way from where it started and it's great if you're looking to combine a lot of tools into one and you're running a smaller shop."
  • "It's a complicated product."
  • "It's a complicated product."

What is our primary use case?

I work for a consulting firm, with many different use cases.

Synapse DW is for traditional data warehousing with a large amount of volume, that requires you to do reporting.

In terms of Synapse Analytics, I haven't put it in yet, but I'm looking at it for kind of one-stop-shop or Swiss Army Knife type projects. They've been asking for a factory or creating something that connects to the cosmos to turn it into analytics reportings, just sort of needless connecting and just making it easy from a developer standpoint to deliver on any sort of business analytics that needs to be done.

What is most valuable?

I think the most valuable component is that pipelines are built into it and then the feature that you can mirror a cosmos BB for analytics.

What needs improvement?

I think that there should be better governance. Actual pipeline level security, if you create a pipeline within the tool, because it's a one-stop-shop for everything, you control who has access to what, and that goes for anything, whether it's an internal or an externally managed table.

I think there needs to be an improvement with support for external tables supporting Spark, but further support of Lakehouse to make it a true data warehousing product where you have this true separation of computes and you have a separation of storage.

I think it kind of dips its toes in there, but in order to achieve, I think with a vision that Microsoft is doing, trying to get at to replace Bolt, but compete with Snowflake and Databricks at the same time, it needs to have those features on.

In the next release, I would like to see Lakehouse and better governance.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics for six months and Synaps for a couple of years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a very stable solution. We have not had any issues with the stability of it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

For its traditional data warehousing, it's scalable.

For Synapse Analytics, I am uncertain about being able to trust it with large volumes, which is what you would expect with Databricks.

There are only three or four people in our organization who do this type of work.

How are customer service and technical support?

We directly work with Microsoft in everything, so they're very responsive for us and they're definitely very committed to that product.

How was the initial setup?

It's a complicated product.

What about the implementation team?

I am a consultant. I implemented the solution myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's very difficult to price unless you know exactly how the customer is using it.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others who are interested in using it.

I think it's definitely something that they should consider. It's come a long way from where it started.

It's just finished out a public preview and it's great if you're looking to combine a lot of tools into one and you're running a smaller shop. I think it's a great tool.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

I have used Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics over the past 12 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability has been getting much better. Two years back, there were issues with it.

What is our primary use case?

We are using this solution for data warehousing and analytics.

What is most valuable?

Pretty much all of the features are valuable. The storage, compute, all essentially differentiate what you do.

They are very reliable and cost-effective. It meets the client's requirements.

It's user-friendly, has a good dashboard, and my team is happy with everything.

What needs improvement?

I am pretty sure that there are areas that need improvement but I just can think of them off the top of my head.

I have been using this solution for a while, I would say approximately two years.

We are using the latest version. It's always updated on the cloud.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We found it to be a very stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's a scalable solution and we find it to be easy to scale.

How are customer service and technical support?

Generally, support from Microsoft is always good.

Good support, offers advanced threat protection, and it integrates well with Polybase
Pros and Cons
  • "The most important feature for me is the integration with PolyBase."
  • "In general, Microsoft support is pretty good."
  • "The need to improve a little bit in terms of user-friendliness."
  • "The auto-scaling capabilities are quite poor, especially compared to Snowflake or Firebolt."

What is our primary use case?

We are mainly using this solution as an interface between the Data Lake and the users.

We are consultants and this product assists with the services that we offer for our clients. Our company has a large number of consultants who are working in this space.

What is most valuable?

The most important feature for me is the integration with PolyBase.

Other valuable features for me are advanced threat protection and data privacy.

What needs improvement?

I would like there to be more focus on the Software as a Service (SaaS) product. For example, Snowflake, one of their competitors, is more focused on SaaS.

They need to improve a little bit in terms of user-friendliness. I would rate them a three out of five, in terms of how user-friendly the interface is.

The auto-scaling capabilities are quite poor, especially compared to Snowflake or Firebolt.

For how long have I used the solution?

In total, I have been using Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

You can scale it, although you need to put in more effort. We have approximately 800 users.

How are customer service and technical support?

In general, Microsoft support is pretty good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with similar products such as Snowflake and Firebolt.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very complex compared to other products. It takes weeks to deploy.

What about the implementation team?

We implement this product for our clients.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost of the licensing depends on the size of the warehouse, where the cost of storage is approximately $130 USD per terabyte. The charge might be several thousand dollars or more each month.

There are multiple options that are available at an extra cost. For example, the advanced threat protection costs an extra $25 USD.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated several options before choosing Synaps Analytics.

What other advice do I have?

The suitability of this product really depends on the use case. It is good if your company is using only Microsoft products and you don't want to use another stack. If you want to use other platforms then you should consider Snowflake, which is also deployed on Azure. It really depends on what it is that you need.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud
