Offers a higher level of granularity and more control over the security features than competing products
Pros and Cons
  • "Unified Storage's centralized management features enable us to accomplish whatever we want in terms of operations and migrations."
  • "The graphical user interface could provide more detail. It would be nice if we could click on the service and get some expanded definitions of them. When hiring new people, it's difficult to teach them how everything works, but if they can access everything, they can teach themselves."

What is our primary use case?

Our organization primarily uses Unified Storage for hybrid cloud connectivity, virtual machine deployment, and migrations. We mainly use mixed storage with varying block and object sizes and compare various databases within the unified interface. It's mainly used to share storage to the SMB and enterprise protocols. It's very helpful for my use case.

We use any data type. The structural application code is any type of data storage. We have EC2 and S2 buckets in AWS and also GCP bucket storage. All of our storage is managed from one location, and we have more than 100 users.

How has it helped my organization?

We previously used a traditional file server storage solution, and we had to use a different vendor for every type of work. By migrating to Nutanix storage, we could simplify everything through a single-vendor approach. The fact that Unified Storage is centralized makes it easier for us to consolidate business operations.

We also appreciate the scalability aspect because we can scale based on the performance procurement of our workload. It unifies all types of storage. Everything has been streamlined and simplified to a single-window approach. This is amazing because we can accomplish whatever we want in terms of operations and migration. We had a three-tier architecture, but now we can stream everything using a single vendor.

What is most valuable?

Unified Storage's centralized management features enable us to accomplish whatever we want in terms of operations and migrations. It's easy to manage the environment. Scalability is also a valuable feature. Unified Storage is highly flexible and stable. Scaling up the environment is simple, and we can scale based on our workload, which can be unpredictable.

Nutanix's SaaS-based data security solution is great. It protects us against ransomware and global data threats. Everything is protected. It also provides cloud-hosted analytics. The Data Lens monitoring services are working well for us. We can view all the analytics from within the centralized management platform, which is convenient for users. The security features are all there. We feel comfortable knowing that we get a high level of detail at the security level. Data Lens' rating is centralized and everything is easy to use.

What needs improvement?

The graphical user interface could provide more detail. It would be nice if we could click on the service and get some expanded definitions of them. When hiring new people, it's difficult to teach them how everything works, but if they can access everything, they can teach themselves.

Deploying it is straightforward. I wasn't part of the initial deployment, but I know about the integration and migration because I primarily focus on storage. The deployment took about 20 days. We have about 10 people on our team.

Unified Storage requires some maintenance, but it isn't that difficult. We need to do some patching, but everything is efficient and manageable. The support system around is excellent. If we need to purchase anything, we can get everything quickly from the website. Only three people are responsible for maintenance and administration.

What about the implementation team?

The Nutanix team handled the deployment. They were very helpful.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Unified Storage is reasonably priced compared to other platforms. The license is neither costly nor cheap, but it's reasonable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We explored Dell VxRail and NetApp's retail solution. Unified Storage offers a higher level of granularity and more control over the security features, and options are available to us.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Nutanix Unified Storage 10 out of 10. I would recommend Unified Storage if you're looking for more security. It's a feature-rich platform that gives you a high degree of granular control over security.

Single-vendor approach simplifies our storage operations and management
Pros and Cons
  • "The most important point is the simplicity of the API integration. We can leverage the API integrations and connect our hybrid-cloud network environment with Nutanix's cloud storage."
  • "I would like to see the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. That could definitely be a major breakthrough in providing a unified, seamless experience for end-users. It could reduce costs as well as human effort."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Unified Storage for our hybrid cloud connectivity as well as virtual machine deployment and migrations. We use it to create different tiers where we store our important data, for our data classification policy. Apart from that, we are using it for our production SAP HANA platform. All our use cases are related to our field which is energy and utilities.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has definitely improved things a lot for us. Earlier, we were using legacy infrastructure with a heterogeneous environment with storage platforms from different providers. We had to approach each vendor for every type of work. But after migrating to Nutanix Unified Storage, everything has been streamlined and simplified, through the single-vendor approach. We are able to accomplish whatever we want in terms of operations and migration.

And with the advanced features—the data protection, data tiering, et cetera—we have been able to get rid of data silos.

What is most valuable?

The features that are most important to us are related to integration with the cloud platforms like Azure and AWS, although it supports Google Cloud as well. But the most important point is the simplicity of the API integration. We can leverage the API integrations and connect our hybrid-cloud network environment with Nutanix's cloud storage.

We also use Nutanix Data Lens to boot our virtual machines and to create zoning.

In addition, we can manage and run the storage from any location. The solution gives us the capability to operate the complete unified platform from the cloud. We can create the logical chunks in the storage, and we can map the different types of pools to any resource, residing in any environment, irrespective of location.

And for managing unstructured data, like audio, video, and images, we create different types of tiering or pools in Unified Storage. On the basis of those pools, the data is classified and we use the classifications to connect the storage pools to their respective endpoints.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. That could definitely be a major breakthrough in providing a unified, seamless experience for end-users. It could reduce costs as well as human effort.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Nutanix Unified Storage for about three and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is perfect. We haven't faced any high-priority or critical issues where the storage platform has been degraded or users are facing difficulties. We are satisfied with the stability and code releases.

In terms of resiliency, with high availability and redundancy, Unified Storage works on a cluster model. With the help of this solution, everything has gone well.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

An important point is that this storage is scalable on demand. It's very elastic. We can add and remove clusters without any downtime. We haven't faced any challenges with the flexibility or scalability. We have completed seamless integrations with third-party tools, including monitoring tools.

We have it deployed across multiple locations and have more than 10,000 end-users.

How are customer service and support?

We get tremendous technical support from the Nutanix team, 24/7.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we used traditional, legacy storage solutions provided by different vendors, including CommVault and Dell. There were problems because we worked with a very heterogeneous network. We were facing a lot of complexities in terms of compliance and defining processes because we had different types of storage devices in our environment.

We found that Nutanix Unified Storage has a complete and rich set of features that can support a cloud-native platform as well as all the workloads that we operate on different cloud platforms. In addition, it's a very cost-effective and stable solution and includes an extensive set of security features for data protection.

After moving to Unified Storage, we got rid of all those complexities. Everything is simplified. We have a single-vendor approach for all of our storage.

How was the initial setup?

I was involved in the full deployment, including migration, implementation, and operations. The initial deployment was a very straightforward process. We followed the complete life cycle approach suggested by the vendor. With that approach, all the phases went well.

Maintenance of the solution includes patching, checking the efficiency of storage, and checking alerts. These are part of the day-to-day operations. We have about 10 people involved in the maintenance.

What about the implementation team?

We worked directly with the vendor.

What was our ROI?

We have seen return on investment over the last three years and we are quite satisfied with it.

The solution has reduced our operational, capital, and licensing costs. It has also reduced the human effort and our headcount in managing the operations compared to our old storage models.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Nutanix's pricing is definitely much better when compared to other storage providers. That was one of the main reasons we switched to this platform.

To anyone who is concerned about the price, I would say that Nutanix is very robust, stable, and unified, with a complete set of advanced features. If you look at the features, Nutanix has the upper hand when compared to other vendors.

The licensing model is very easy with Unified Storage and our operational cost has been reduced drastically.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated another product from a similar vendor whose storage platforms we were already using. The main differences were the cost, simplicity, ease of management, and having a single pane of glass dashboard for each module. The seamless integration and simplified licensing model were also important.

Nutanix also provides very robust security. The encryption is perfect. The data is fully encrypted with an advanced set of encryption keys and policies. We are very satisfied with the encryption and data protection provided by the solution.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to organizations that are planning to migrate to a unified storage solution is to go with Nutanix Unified Storage as this is the most trusted and stable platform I have ever seen.

We haven't had any challenges using the solution. There have been no problems with the implementation, integration, or in terms of operations. That is also true for operational support, technical support, patch management, and license management.

We are also using Nutanix clusters for our traditional workloads and Prism Element and Prism Central. We are using them because they are a part of hyper-converged technologies and save us a lot of costs. These clusters have unified storage, network, and compute, providing an integrated platform that simplifies management.

Requires less oversight, expands easily, and has a single pane of glass
Pros and Cons
  • "The integration with Prism Central makes it a lot easier to manage, so we just have a single pane of glass location that we can go to. We do not have a separate admin console or anything that we have to use."
  • "While they are good and they do work, some of the snapshotting and tiering features are not as simple to set up as they could be."

What is our primary use case?

We are using the files component of it. We are using it for our network file servers, as well as for some encrypted storage.

By implementing this solution, we wanted to get away from legacy storage solutions like NetApp. We wanted to find a way to make the most use of our Nutanix environment and the storage that we had purchased for the whole HCI implementation.

How has it helped my organization?

There is much less oversight of the storage than we had before. We were able to take storage administration away from our backup administrator. We were able to free him up to do other tasks, and the storage fell under sys admins who were able to keep an eye on it from day to day without having to spend too much time or man-hours. It gave us a lot of time back within our department.

It certainly fits our needs in terms of flexibility. It is easily expandable. As long as you have existing storage in your environment, you can license as much of that as you need for the files. The nice thing about it is that you can split up your licenses between multiple clusters. That is what we did with our production in the DR site. We set up a protection domain on our DR site and split the storage fifty-fifty so that we could have a backup of all of our files on our DR site, which was very easy to set up.

Its resiliency is good in terms of the protection domains and the ability to replicate to another cluster that took care of our BCDR needs. Also, because it is built on the Nutanix ECI platform, it is as resilient as Nutanix is, so a single drive failure or something like that is not going to affect the storage array. With the way files are implemented as VMs, if a host goes down and you have a cluster of three VMs, you know that you will always have one that is up and available. As long as you are not riding right on the edge of your storage resiliency limit, you can lose a node without batting an eye.

It is a good solution if you need to unify your organization’s block, file, and object storage. If you have multiple different storage platforms or you require different formatting of your storage arrays, you can get everything on just one platform. You can manage it all in one location. That makes it much simpler to manage.

It rolls everything into one management platform or one pane of glass. You can either have the storage managed by your sys admins or virtualization admins. You can move away from having a dedicated storage admin, or if you still need a storage admin, you can assign them rights to the storage management very easily. It gives them a simple interface to use. It just makes it much easier to tear down silos and consolidate management tasks. If not the roles, you can at least consolidate the location where that management is done, even if you still require multiple people in the department to manage it.

What is most valuable?

The integration with Prism Central makes it a lot easier to manage, so we just have a single pane of glass location that we can go to. We do not have a separate admin console or anything that we have to use.

It also replicates a lot of the features that NetApp had in terms of tiered storage and snapshots but at a much cheaper price.

What needs improvement?

While they are good and they do work, some of the snapshotting and tiering features are not as simple to set up as they could be. However, it has improved from when we first rolled it out about three years ago. In the newest release, they have improved the management of it a lot. I have not configured new storage, so they may have made that process easier and I do not know. The management aspect of it has improved a lot just over the few years that we have had it but the initial configuration of the snapshots and the tiering can still be a little bit difficult.

In terms of the integration of Unified Storage with Prism, the funny thing is that they have now split it out for some reason. We used to be able to manage files within Prism directly, but now they give a link to launch a files console, which then launches as a separate web page. It is not the biggest deal in the world, but it seems odd that they would take something that was integrated and now break it out. I have also questioned them on why they would do that. In the meantime, we still access it from the Prism console. We only need to open a new browser tab, so it is not that it changed that much. It just has a dedicated tab now, but it seems like an odd thing for them to do. I am not quite sure why they did it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It has been rock solid for as long as we have run it. Other than the hardware issues on the platform that needed to be resolved, there has only been one time when we had any software-related issues, and it did not even affect the storage. It was just an alert for which we had to call their support to resolve. We never had downtime on the storage since we started using it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not scaled it as much, but in terms of the existing hardware that you have and buying the licenses, you can license it up to the maximum of your storage. Literally, you get a file from support and you install it. You can add that storage to your pool immediately. We have set up multiple storage pools, and those are very simple to configure and manage. If we bought more storage and added more nodes, we could keep expanding it. That ties more into the Nutanix platform in terms of their ability to add more nodes, but it is easy to scale.

Everyone is using the files that are on there. There are about 200 people in our entire organization.

How are customer service and support?

Their tech support is good. They answer quickly. They have a good response time. They met our SLAs. They were able to resolve our problems quickly. One time, it was a hardware-related issue, so we had the replacement parts sent out the next day per our support agreement. I have no complaints about support. I would rate them a nine out of ten. I never rate anything a ten because there can always be some improvements, but they are pretty close to a ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have had a few different storage solutions over the years. We used NetApp, and then we also had a product from Apache called HCP. Hitachi Unified Storage was there, but those were all separate storage arrays that were dedicated for a task, whereas Nutanix is integrated with the entire compute environment.

The Hitachi we had did have a NetApp head, so we were using the same management interface for that. There are certain things that it still does at a more enterprise level. You can get more granularity in NetApp in terms of tweaking things to a very finite degree, but if you are a mid-tier organization or a small business, Nutanix would simplify things. It makes it much easier to run or get a lot of those enterprise-level improvements.

How was the initial setup?

We are using it on-prem. I know they have some integrations with AWS, S3 buckets, and things like that, but we do not use them currently.

I was involved in the deployment for Nutanix but not for NetApp, so I cannot compare it with the NetApp implementation. Nutanix was very simple to set up other than some complexity with the tiering and snapshot configuration. We got a license from them, and we installed it on the application or on Prism and deployed the VMs. Pretty much everything configured itself. We did not have to do a whole lot. Once we put in the parameters we required, it took over and did everything else itself.

What about the implementation team?

It was all done in-house. Two people were involved in it.

In terms of maintenance, we have three admins who have the ability to manage it on any given day, but nobody really needs to look at it all that much unless there is an error or something like that or there is some configuration change. So, we only need one admin working on it on a day-to-day basis.

What was our ROI?

I do not deal with the financials, but I know we have paid a lot less for Nutanix Unified Storage than we did for NetApp. It has saved man-hours in terms of management. That alone would provide enough return on investment. We can use those man-hours for other projects. It helps with better time management.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is very good. It is much more competitive than a dedicated storage platform.

To someone who is researching Nutanix Unified Storage as an SDS solution for their organization but is concerned about the cost, I would say that if they are looking for just a storage solution, I do not know if I would look at Nutanix solely for that. However, if you already have an HCI platform or you are looking for an HCI platform, and you already have or are looking for virtualization in your environment, then it is a no-brainer to add Unified Storage to Nutanix as a part of that environment. I went to them solely as a storage vendor.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at some of the other vendors such as Nimble and Pure, as well as getting another NetApp, but the cost ratio of what they wanted for what we needed was just too high. Nutanix definitely came in at a good price point for us.

The security offered with Nutanix Unified Storage is good. We use encryption there. It is very easy to set up. The key management is very simple. We are only using software encryption, and I do not know if Nutanix offers hardware-based encryption on their hardware or not. I know that the other vendors, such as NetApp and Pure, do have those options, but hardware encryption is much more expensive. Even if Nutanix offers it, I am sure it would be a lot more expensive than the software. Software encryption is often as difficult to set up as hardware encryption, but Nutanix makes that very simple.

What other advice do I have?

I believe they provide one terabyte of Unified Storage free with any license. I would advise testing out your free terabytes in your environment, and if you like it, you can go for it. That is what we did. We evaluated it first using the terabyte of space that we got for free. Once we added our licenses, we just kept going with what we were testing and expanded out the storage to max out our license. So, try it out for yourself. You already have access to it if you have got Nutanix.

In terms of managing your unstructured data, such as audio and video, Nutanix Unified Storage does have some features to organize by file types. We do have one folder with MP3 and video files, which is separate from everything else, but because of the way we organize it, the Nutanix part of it did not come into play too much.

I would rate Nutanix Unified Storage a nine out of ten. It has been pretty much as perfect as we can ask for.

Provides scalability, security, and fast recovery
Pros and Cons
  • "The scalability, data redundancy, and security are valuable."
  • "The dashboard can have more details and be more useful."

What is our primary use case?

My colleague and I are currently trying to migrate from the old-style file server to the new Nutanix Files feature. We have bought and organized some sessions with their technician to be able to migrate the files to the new structure and see if we can meet the compliance needs of our company.

We migrated our whole infrastructure based on HPE and VMware to HPE and Nutanix. This powerful and new type of structure has taken our workload to the next level.

How has it helped my organization?

We have seen fast recovery time and the ability to quickly move the model machine from one to another. We are proud to be here at .NEXT 2024 and having bought the Nutanix Infrastructure.

Fortunately, we did not have any attacks, and we did not have to manage any attacks. However, with a good recovery point, it would be easy to recover data with Nutanix.

Nutanix Unified Storage has not resulted in a reduction in the number of storage nodes due to increased storage capacity per node, but we have the possibility to utilize more VM servers to synchronize any workload. We can move a VM from one node to another in a fast and secure way based on our needs. We have different types of nodes. We have different configurations, and we can move the servers from one to another based on our needs and the workload.

Nutanix Unified Storage has saved us money because many activities are completely automatic. It surely saves money and time for our IT team. It has saved about 30% of their time.

What is most valuable?

The scalability, data redundancy, and security are valuable.

What needs improvement?

The dashboard can have more details and be more useful.

For how long have I used the solution?

I started using it when we put the Nutanix infrastructure in our company in 2021. It has been about three and a half years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have chosen Nutanix just for scalability. We are planning a new installation of the cluster. We have to create a new cluster due to the workload needs. We have to put a cluster in the full flash mode and not hybrid mode. We will put new nodes and attach them to the cluster. It will work great.

How are customer service and support?

Their technical support is great. We opened a number of cases. We had a problem with licensing, and we also wanted some information about launching the shell in CVM. We absolutely had a great experience with the tech support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use a similar solution for storage. We moved from hyperconvergence and we had the standard structure.

How was the initial setup?

It is quite easy to deploy.

What about the implementation team?

We had help from Nutanix. Their technical architect came to help us during the migration. He helped design the configuration of the new clusters because we had new clusters. It was great. We had no problem with that.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We had someone working in a supplier company who had experience with Nutanix. One day, we were discussing that our company had decided to go to a new type of infrastructure, and we realized that Nutanix was the right decision. We also started using AHV. We left VMware completely and used the hypervisor on Nutanix.

We are currently considering a new cluster of three new nodes, full flash to NVMe, because we have some new needs for the ERP of our company. If the management approves it, we can put it in our company and take our infrastructure to a new level.

What other advice do I have?

We are starting to analyze the flow with micro-segmentation to protect unstructured data in our organization. We have not yet put it into production. We need to study more and go deeper into it. These tools are absolutely important for us. In our company, security or cybersecurity is put at a very high level. It is considered important. We have to manage it and put the correct configuration with things like micro-segmentation.

I would rate Nutanix Unified Storage a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Simplified management, excellent scalability, and very good support
Pros and Cons
  • "The simplicity of management is valuable because, in more traditional environments, the platform updates are much more complex."
  • "Perhaps when it comes to deploying NUS virtual machines on top of CVMs, it should not be necessary for it to be in all of them or they should require fewer resources on the servers."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for servers and files for internal use. We also use it as a partner because we are also proposing it to clients for S3 anti-ransomware storage and so on.

How has it helped my organization?

It is helping us better understand the solution so that we can sell it. We are Nutanix partners, so this is the most relevant for us.

We have not tested Nutanix Unified Storage for data-intensive workloads, such as AI or data analytics, but because we know the latency of the Nutanix clusters, my understanding is that it will be good.

What is most valuable?

The simplicity of management is valuable because, in more traditional environments, the platform updates are much more complex.

What needs improvement?

I do not have any input as such. It is a robust and simple solution. Perhaps when it comes to deploying NUS virtual machines on top of CVMs, it should not be necessary for them to be in all of them or they should require fewer resources on the servers.

For how long have I used the solution?

We evaluated it about two or three years ago and deployed it internally last year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Its stability is very good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is spectacular.

How are customer service and support?

Nutanix’s support is very good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Nutanix Unified Storage, we did not work with anything similar.

How was the initial setup?

It is pretty simple. We do not have any deployment strategies.

What was our ROI?

Infrastructure management is greatly reduced, and that is a quick return on investment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are Nutanix partners, so it is pretty good. With the free terabyte that comes with the Nutanix clusters, we have started to build proposals for the clients. The price adjustment with the new policy of Nutanix Unified Storages seems attractive. Let us see if it has results.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate any other solution.

What other advice do I have?

On paper, Nutanix Unified Storage looks very good for detecting and blocking ransomware threats, but we have not tried it. From what we are seeing and hearing, it can be very interesting and powerful.

Implementing Nutanix Unified Storage can result in a reduction in the number of storage nodes due to increased storage capacity per node, but our use case is not very big. We had a more or less small environment, and now with the Nutanix cluster also, it is not very big. It has not affected us in that sense.

For protecting data in our organization, we have backup tools and antivirus tools. We are backing up the clusters with the NAKIVO solution in addition to taking snapshots of Nutanix itself. We also apply the Microsoft security part in the environments. These tools are very important for our functionality to guarantee business continuity in the event of a disaster.

I would rate Nutanix Unified Storage a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

I like the ability to manage all my file servers from a single platform
Pros and Cons
  • "Nutanix's analytics provide better insights into all of our files."
  • "The interface could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We use Nutanix Unified Storage for file storage and analytics. We use Nutanix as an additional server. Before implementing it, we didn't have insight into our files. We have two Nutanix clusters. One is at our primary location, and we also have an off-site disaster recovery cluster.  My company has about a thousand users on the main site.

How has it helped my organization?

Nutanix's analytics provide better insights into all of our files.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is Nutanix's file analytics. I like the ability to manage all my file servers from a single platform. I can see which owners have access to files and track changes.

What needs improvement?

The interface could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have used Nutanix Unified Storage for about seven months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Nutanix is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is excellent. We can scale up and out. Nutanix can expand to meet any demand. We can increase the VMs, CPU, and memory as needed.

How are customer service and support?

I rate Nutanix support 10 out of 10. It's excellent. We contact them when we have problems, and they always resolve the issue quickly.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before implementing Nutanix, we used a traditional file server storage solution. We adopted Nutanix because we have more than a million files and we didn't have any insights or analytics. We didn't know who deleted or moved files. We couldn't see who had permission to access a file. Nutanix is integrated with our Active Directory.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is straightforward, and it only took about 15 minutes to deploy Nutanix to our file server. We had help from a reseller and rely on the vendor for maintenance.

What was our ROI?

We haven't seen an ROI so far, but I believe we'll start to see a return after three years.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Nutanix is cost-effective because we don't need to upgrade our infrastructure. It's cheaper than the alternatives.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Nutanix Unified Storage 10 out of 10. The file server analytics are great.

Enables us to reduce the amount of nodes but should be more user-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is the storage density of the nodes. We went with the HP's low-density nodes."
  • "It could be more user-friendly."

How has it helped my organization?

The price was unmatched for us. We got the pricing down. We had an issue where we already had two copies of the data, but we needed to get the third to be compliant. We were looking at alternatives with a backup vendor, but we couldn't get the pricing to that level. They had an archiving function to S3 or NFS, if you wanted to use it. In this case, we went with S3.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the storage density of the nodes. We went with the HP's low-density nodes.

The installation is set and forget. We didn't really have the personnel staffing to be able to handle more storage systems, we were already running in Nutanix as a primary driver for a virtualization platform. It was just a matter of setting up another cluster.

Nutanix enables us to reduce the amount of nodes. We had the coding and data reduction features. We had the larger, hard-density nodes and we were able to decrease the amount quite a bit. Had we built it another way, we would have ended up with larger traditional storage vendors. Nutanix is really perfect.

We just installed it, set it up, and then we forgot about it. We do quarterly patching. We just set up the alerting and it just works. That's the benefit that we want all IT systems to have.

What needs improvement?

It could be more user-friendly. You can abstract the technical details. If you look at the IP plans and the services running underneath it, it's quite a simple product. As a customer, you get exposed to a lot of the decisions, which is not always necessary. That should be able to exist for some customers who have special needs but in general, the complexity could be lower. It looks scarier than it is.

For how long have I used the solution?

At my last place, we used it for two years. It's still running. We used it as a secondary target for data security backups. We were using S3 buckets which were exported to the primary backup cluster.

How are customer service and support?

Support is excellent. It has a fixed delivery value. We know we're going to get good people.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use VMware to protect unstructured data. Unstructured data is a horrible mess. You need to ship it and you need to ship it fast. We're very happy with the tools we have in place to protect it.

We used to use an old Dell system which was fine in terms of data reduction, but we had issues when we needed to rehydrate the data and get it back into production. The RTOs and RPOs just didn't work for us anymore. Nutanix is so much faster in comparison.

We switched to Nutanix as part of a lifecycle management. We noticed that even if the data reduction was good with the Dell system, we couldn't get the data out fast enough. That's the primary reason why we ended up going with Nutanix.

How was the initial setup?

The deployment was easy. It took two days for us to be up and running.

What other advice do I have?

We looked at the Data Lens in our POC but we didn't end up putting it into production.

I would rate Nutanix Unified Storage a seven out of ten. They could simplify the user experience. Technically it's a ten, but there's still some work we have to do for it.
