We use it to manage storage systems. We can see who changes file names, folder names, deletes files, removes or adds permissions.
Analyst at HCL Technologies
Offers the ability to modify permissions and file removals, and connect the Varonis Data Security Platform to our storage systems
Pros and Cons
- "There's also a 90-day policy where if a user is not using the warehouse, it will automatically delete that username."
- "There is one thing that if I add something manually, I get so many alerts. That's the biggest bad thing."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
We can check modify permissions and file removals, and connect the Varonis Data Security Platform to our storage systems like NetApp.
When we add a filer to Varonis, there's a policy that automatically connects the SVM or CIFS shares. That's good. We can automatically add these without changes.
We can easily check logs and find out who modified a file or folder.
What needs improvement?
There is one thing that if I add something manually, I get so many alerts. That's the biggest bad thing.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using it for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I would rate the stability a nine out of ten. It is stable for me. There are no issues, no bugs and no breakdown.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's included in three or four projects.
We never had any issues with scalability. We also have free training from Varonis on how to use it.
How are customer service and support?
The customer service and support are good.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is easy. It is a good tool to manage storage and get snapshot backups.
For Varonis deployment it takes almost three to four hours.
The software updates automatically. We can check it in the manager.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is good. It neither expensive nor cheap. It is average.
What other advice do I have?
I would like to recommend it. In one tool, we can see everything. We can check 180 days of files and see if anyone has made changes.
There's also a 90-day policy where if a user is not using the warehouse, it will automatically delete that username.
Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Monitors the accidental sharing of sensitive information and helps with data loss prevention
Pros and Cons
- "The solution ensures that users have not accidentally shared sensitive information with the wrong people or too many people."
- "The solution's interface is a little complicated with regard to setting up filters and reports."
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution for data loss prevention. The tool scans Google Drive documents to ensure nothing is overshared.
What is most valuable?
The solution ensures that users have not accidentally shared sensitive information with the wrong people or too many people. It monitors whether users have mistakenly shared something with an external party, the entire organization, or their personal Google account.
What needs improvement?
The solution's interface is a little complicated with regard to setting up filters and reports.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Varonis Platform for a couple of years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I didn’t face any issues with the solution’s stability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Only a couple of security administrators use the tool in our organization.
How are customer service and support?
The solution provides good technical support.
How was the initial setup?
The solution's initial setup was easy. We also had good onboarding training from the provider.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Varonis Platform wasn't certainly the cheapest solution. However, I thought it was worth the money.
What other advice do I have?
We chose the solution because of its capabilities. Varonis did a proof of concept for us, giving us some very useful results. We thought the tool worked well and decided to use it. Varonis Platform is worth investigating, but users should also look at competitors in case they've caught up or if they are cheaper.
We have the tool alerting us to particular types of information. It looks for PII, credit card numbers, passport numbers, driver's licenses, etc. It also looks for passwords, which is really useful because people like to collect passwords and protect their documents. It flags those things, and we can have it immediately close off the sharing of files like that. We can also have it alert us, and we can follow up with the user.
The solution makes me more comfortable knowing that we have a safety net when people make mistakes. Earlier, we didn't know what people were doing with their data. We always wondered if people were sharing too much and if we were holding information we shouldn't be holding at all. We had no idea about those things. Varonis Platform lets us know the answers to those questions.
The onboarding provided helps new users try using the Varonis Platform. The tool is probably not very easy to figure out on your own, but the training provided is good.
Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Enables us to ensure accuracy and proper access control
Pros and Cons
- "The most important feature is remediation. In remediation support, there is no group permission. We'll go ahead and remediate the access from the Dell folder to the parent folder."

What is our primary use case?
We use the solution to provide safer access to the new user, and provide remediate access to the user.
What is most valuable?

I rate the solution’s scalability an eight out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
The response would be a little bit quicker.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The deployment is moderate and requires technical assistance.
What other advice do I have?
Data protection means that when we restrict access to a group, such as for JetPass access, only those who need it will have support. If only you need access, we will ensure that only you can access it and no one else. In the future, if others need access, they can get approval from the concerned owners to activate it. This way, we can effectively protect the data.
With Active Directory, we can improve the remediation process. If a permission group is mapped, it can be cross-checked with Active Directory. We can ensure accuracy and proper access control.
Suppose a customer asks for access to a folder. In that case, we need to ask for the required level of access, such as read-only, write access, or download permissions. Based on this information, we will gather the necessary details and process the request accordingly.
I recommend the solution.
Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Offers visibility and helps to keep track of access
Pros and Cons
- "The solution has significantly improved data security and compliance posture by allowing us to track and monitor activities. We can see who accesses data and when files are created and understand what's happening in our environment."
What is our primary use case?
We use the product for auditing, and keeping track of shares. It ensures proper access control and monitors file creation, access by relevant users, and productivity analytics.
What is most valuable?
The solution has significantly improved data security and compliance posture by allowing us to track and monitor activities. We can see who accesses data and when files are created and understand what's happening in our environment.
We are primarily using the DatAdvantage feature, which is accessed through the web UI and DNS tools. This has been quite helpful for us. While we don't have licenses for other features at the moment. We are getting a POC to evaluate further.
It provides visibility into file access, allowing identification of unauthorized access. The cloud feature helps assess data exposure and recommends changes to secure data, preventing overexposure to the public. We are interested in the key feature that prevents overexposure, making sure that only authorized individuals have access.
Having a centralized platform provides visibility, which proves beneficial given our constraints with a smaller team.
What needs improvement?
The tool's update process is not easy as compared to other tools.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The tool is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Varonis Platform is scalable.
How was the initial setup?
I have experience with the tool's update and it is complex. The process is not easy as compared to other tools.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Varonis Platform an eight out of ten. Currently, we're evaluating our environment and assessing tools to meet new needs. Netskope was brought in for specific reasons, and as we review its capabilities, I find similarities with the Varonis Platform. I'm interested in comparing the two to make an informed decision.

Top-notch alerting and reporting
Pros and Cons
- "That alerting and reporting service is great."
- "The GUI should be more functional. There should be a process for connecting through Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc."
What is our primary use case?
This solution informs us about who's moving data, whether accidentally or on purpose. If a mass folder deletion occurs or mass copying, master lateral movements, things like that, then this solution sends us an alert. We set up the alerts and this solution informs us of who's moving the data. Sometimes people drag and drop by mistake; this can move thousands of files and folders — depending on their size. If this happens, the system alerts us so we can correct it before it affects our users. We also use it for monetary purposes.
We use this solution to monitor all of our 16,000 users. Regarding the admin solution, we have around 10 users.
What is most valuable?
That alerting and reporting service is great.
What needs improvement?
The troubleshooting capabilities could be improved. It has so many interconnected components. It connects with Active Directory, SharePoint, Exchange, and NetApp. Trying to troubleshoot all of these components can get very complicated — especially with NetApp.
The GUI should be more functional. There should be a process for connecting through Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This solution is stable and reliable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We expanded this solution in the past — it was a complex process. It cannot be done by an average user. To perform a full upgrade, you'll definitely require assistance from Varonis support.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support is very good — very responsive.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was a bit complex. The average user wouldn't be able to do it.
Deployment took between a week or two. The filtering, the fine-tuning; all of that takes a while. Plus, there is ongoing fine-tuning that has to take place after the initial setup.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Licensing is on an annual basis. Maintenance and renewal fees are separate. Varonis Datalert is quite expensive.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to others interested in using this solution is to be very careful during the initial installation. Either purchase professional services assistance from a third party or get help from Varonis support. It's not a job that an average user can do. The slightest mistake can wind up costing you a lot of data.
Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of nine.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

It does a good job on file share awareness and has phenomenal technical support
Pros and Cons
- "On the Varonis side, technical support is phenomenal. Their ability to explain is very good, and they seem to be very knowledgeable. When I get an alert that doesn't quite make sense, they dive in there and kind of take me through it. That's very useful and very good. There are some false alerts, but it is better to have a false alert than no alert at all."

- "We have Microsoft Office 365. I just saw an article today which says that they're actually getting integrated with Microsoft Office 365, which would be a useful feature. For user-based reports, log on activity, and stuff like that, it doesn't seem to really be present like Log360. That could just be my inexperience with it. I've been dealing with it for only about two and a half months."
- "For user-based reports, log on activity, and stuff like that, it doesn't seem to really be present like Log360."
What is our primary use case?
I'm relatively new to this organization. I'm just comparing and contrasting ManageEngine Log360 and Varonis DatAlert. Both tools are rather new to me. I know that they're kind of looking at both. I don't know if they're going to want to maintain both. There seem to be some use cases to retain both. I think they've had DatAlert a little bit longer than Log360.
I've done a couple of webinars, but I haven't had a whole lot of time to just kind of dive into both of those. I'm still in the developmental stage, and I am evaluating both of these solutions. I am trying to compare apples to apples as to what they do and where their strengths and weaknesses lie to make sure that if we got rid of one, we weren't going to be missing out on something.

I'm just comparing and contrasting ManageEngine Log360 and Varonis DatAlert. Log360 seems to do a little bit a better job on user-based awareness for running reports, and DatAlert seems to be doing a little bit better job on file share awareness. Log360 seems to actually be a full scene, and Varonis seems to integrate with scenes.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate Varonis DatAlert a nine out of ten.
