A flexible solution that performs well in hybrid and mixed environments
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of this solution is that it can be used in many different kinds of systems."
  • "Technical support for this solution needs to be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and we assist our customers with products from many vendors. This is a solution that we have provided to several customers who are currently using it.

All of our customers use an on-premises deployment model in a variety of environments made up of both Windows and Linux machines.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of this solution is that it can be used in many different kinds of systems. Our customers sometimes have mixed environments with different operating systems and storage from different vendors, and it is easier for them to use only one tool.

What needs improvement?

The price of this solution could be improved.

Technical support for this solution needs to be improved. We have some critical problems that have not yet been resolved, and everyone is nervous.

Depending on the environment, some of the tools have problems.

In the next release of this solution, I would like to see more support for more virtual devices.

For how long have I used the solution?

Our customers have been using this solution for several years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would say that the stability of this solution is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Our environment includes more than one thousand systems.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is something that needs improvement.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of this solution is very difficult because we have a complex environment. With more than one thousand systems, the migration of the systems is not easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing costs for this solution are very high.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Helps reduce hardware costs and offers good performance
Pros and Cons
  • "If you use the NetBackup Appliance you do not need to have separate media servers and hardware. You can configure the same storage as a media server and master server as well as a storage port. This helps to reduce the hardware costs of the media server."
  • "With technical support, it feels like they aren't well trained and it takes forever to get answers out of them."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution as a media server and for storing data.

What is most valuable?

For traditional setups, you need to have one separate media server plus you need maybe a data domain or some kind of storage. If you use the NetBackup Appliance you do not need to have separate media servers and hardware. You can configure the same storage as a media server and master server as well as a storage port. This helps to reduce the hardware costs of the media server.

What needs improvement?

We've only been using the solution for one year, and since we've installed it, it's been running fine, so I don't have any complaints about it so far. It could be improved if it was easier to run some command items on the GUI. If they could make it a bit more user-friendly then it would be helpful.

In future releases, it would be helpful if there was something to help make recovery easy and the process faster. They need some sort of restore related feature similar to what VMware offers, in which you can directly use the image of a backup. For example, they could offer to make it so you can create a backup that can sit in your storage that you can use to send an image map via email or somewhere convenient.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We've just reached the point where we'll be able to see how flexible the scalability is. We haven't tested the scalability just yet, so I can't say exactly if it is scalable or how scalable it can be.

How are customer service and technical support?

With technical support, it feels like they aren't well trained and it takes forever to get answers out of them. We've had many complaints about them. Usually, we end up fixing it in house, since it feels like technical support is just running out the clock.

I would rate technical support at six out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used EMC Data Domain. We switched because we required an additional media server, and were using new hardware which was isolated for media server purposes. Since this solution could also work as a media server, I didn't need to buy another hardware license and support for another server, so we switched.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was simple. It was straightforward and there weren't too many complications. In terms of maintenance, one person is always managing the backup infrastructure. It's the operation team data center operator who monitors the backup during the night shift.

What about the implementation team?

We have a partner in Dubai that consulted with us on the implementation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't know anything specific in regards to pricing, but I do have friends that say there's an IBM solution that's less expensive than NetBackup.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We only ever made an evaluation between EMC Data Domain, our previous solution, and NetBackup.

What other advice do I have?

If you are using NetBackup software on the same appliance you can expect good performance. In terms of the solution, you may need to log cases with different vendors if you have a different storage solution. However, if you have the NetBackup appliance and it doesn't need backup software you can create logs with the same technical support. It makes it easy for coordination. You can eliminate redundancies if you have a single vendor.

I would rate this solution eight out of ten.

A speedy backup solution for physical and virtual servers
Pros and Cons
  • "Installing this solution is very simple and takes perhaps five or ten minutes."
  • "I would like the ability to recover a single folder within the backup of a virtual machine."

What is our primary use case?

This solution is for backup and recovery in physical and virtual environments, in data centers or server rooms. We are a solution provider company, and I recommend this product for clients and projects with these needs.

The majority of our deployments are either on-premise or private cloud.

How has it helped my organization?

Our clients are able to back up their physical and virtual machines, seated on one of many storage devices from Sun, EMC, HP, IBM, etc.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of this solution is the backup speed. The traffic made up of backup data is not passed on the slow networks. Rather, it is delivered directly from the network storage solutions.

I offer another feature to my customers, called the Backup Aerial network (BAN). This separates the heavy backup traffic from the service traffic. I use a dedicated data switch or network port to separate the lighter traffic from services such as Exchange, Skype, Active Directory, DNS, etc.

What needs improvement?

I would like the ability to recover a single folder within the backup of a virtual machine. As it is now, if I want to retrieve a single folder then I need to first recover the entire VM and then copy that one folder. This takes longer than it should for this operation.

The price of this solution should be lowered by ten or fifteen percent. This would help to compete in an environment where people and companies share licenses, effectively lowering their price. I estimate that our sales would increase by fifty percent if the prices were lowered.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for about ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is not as stable as Veeam. When it crashes and you want to cover, it is a complicated procedure.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a very scalable solution. We have deployed this product for very big solutions. The Central Administration Console helps to make Veritas more scalable than competitors such as Veeam.

How was the initial setup?

Installing this solution is very simple and takes perhaps five or ten minutes. It takes a little longer to purchase the license and register the product.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

A stable solution that provides simplicity, with a straightforward setup
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is very scalable."
  • "They could simplify the process of installing, and provide more space for data during the process."

What is our primary use case?

High available Backup Solution for about 200 Unix Servers (Linux, AIX, SunOS)

What is most valuable?

We like the simplicity of the solution. You can recover and browse backed up data via CLI (command-line interface). The platform independence of the bare metal restore feature is great.

What needs improvement?

They could improve the process of installing by not wasting so much local disk space during the process.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution's stability is perfect.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very scalable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did previously use a different solution. The change was a management decision because of the pricing.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was easy. The only problem that we had occasionally was, when we installed the software, we had to store a big amount of data to disk, because the package included all the operating systems and sometimes the space on the filesystem was not enough. We needed about one and a half gigabyte to install the software.

What other advice do I have?

We use a local high-available backup server version of the solution.

With this solution, we've had perfect support and our use cases were perfectly served.

I would rate this solution nine out of ten.

Ensures data integrity by preventing any alterations to stored data.
Pros and Cons
  • "The utilization of Data Domain is crucial because of its integration with a key Veritas feature: retention lock. This feature ensures data integrity by preventing any alterations to stored data. When NetBackup interacts with Data Domain, enabling the retention lock feature ensures that neither administrators nor backup personnel can modify data stored within the system. This functionality is vital for compliance purposes and meets the requirements of auditors."
  • "The scalability could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We use the Veritas NetBackup Appliance within banking systems. We operate with an older bank in Turkey. Some of our backup administrators possess significant experience with this suite, surpassing their familiarity with other protection sheets. Our usage encompasses various components such as network configurations and PPDM.

It serves as the preferred system for backup operations across the entire CAN due to our team's extensive prior experience. This preference is attributed to its versatility in handling diverse workloads, including databases, email systems, and primary banking platforms. Additionally, all data, including backups and NetBackup metadata, is directed to the Data Domain system.

The utilization of Data Domain is crucial because of its integration with a key Veritas feature: retention lock. This feature ensures data integrity by preventing any alterations to stored data. When NetBackup interacts with Data Domain, enabling the retention lock feature ensures that neither administrators nor backup personnel can modify data stored within the system. This functionality is vital for compliance purposes and meets the requirements of auditors.

What is most valuable?

I replaced the solution with the data domain systems because we also provide managed backup servers and backup service steps. We are managing to pick up the environment with the DPS and the data domain. We integrate in Cyber Recovery Solutions.

What needs improvement?

The scalability could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution's stability a five or six out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution has some limitations depending on the development environment. It is not scalable.

Two to three customers are using this solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not easy. It takes a long time because there are many components to integrate, like a backup console, media server to define each systems. If you start a project, it will take a lot of time to perform the access to backup services.

What other advice do I have?

Veritas NetBackup Appliance's functionality relies on the Veritas software and the hardware. It can integrate with various storage systems like Flex apps, ensuring compatibility with diverse infrastructure setups. However, thorough testing is necessary to ensure optimal performance within the domain system.

If you have experience with the NetBackup software before, transitioning to the appliance may involve a learning curve. However, once familiar with the software, managing the backup processes becomes more manageable.

Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.
