Managed cloud services have helped accelerate experiments with flexible configuration options
Sometimes the costs associated with spinning up a service, especially managed services, have implications. For example, if I create a Glue job, that will create S3 buckets and other resources that have cost implications, but once I clean up a Glue job, it does not delete the other accessory resources. Sometimes, I have to go hunting for what resources Amazon AWS might have provisioned and how it is costing behind the scenes. It can be complex depending on your level of expertise. It is not as easy to get started, especially when it comes to secure practices. Amazon AWS is more hands-on than other platforms.

Has a quick development cycle and continuous integration
The initial setup is straightforward. Heroku integrates well. You only have to push the code, and it automatically deploys the new version. Whether you have permission depends on the application. Currently, I have one application that I deploy myself. I rate the initial setup a nine out of ten, where one is difficult and ten is easy.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features of Amazon AWS are ease of use, deployment, and short lead time. If you are using an on-premise solution, you need to wait for the hardware, and nowadays it is very difficult, the lead time becomes very long. We propose to our customers to use Amazon AWS because it is very easy, no need to wait for hardware delivery."
"We can spin up the server anytime and have root access to it."
"The documentation is very good."
"Stable platform with a straightforward setup. It's user-friendly, with more reliable servers compared to the competition."
"AWS is stable."
"It is flexible, and it is quite comfortable to use for organizations."
"The bundle of services provided by them such as CloudFront, CloudWatch, EC2, Simple Storage service etc undoubtedly cover all the aspects needed by the developers and system administrators to match infrastructure and scalability issues for the growing demands."
"We have many projects where we can resolve a lot of issues with Amazon AWS. It has given customers a lot of visibility with their data. Many customers do not know what they can learn from their data and I provide them with this using useful information using Amazon AWS."
"One of the best things about Heroku is that it is very easy and straightforward to deploy an application."
"Valuable for us was the fast deployment. This means the time to market is improved without pain for developers."
"The product is stable."
"I have been a great fan of Heroku as it simplified my work for many years."
"We use Heroku to run generic data. We also use it for our customer development environment. It helps us to build and test websites."
"I like the tool's scalability, CLI, and dashboards."
"They solve most of our problems and we don't experience many issues with them."
"The platform is very Node.js-friendly, which is something that is important to us."

Cons

"However a catch with the above mentioned tools (among others) and approaches is that to replicate your data (e.g. objects in a bucket) can involve other AWS S3 fees."
"They should implement the command shell by default. As it is now, to open the console, you have to download the command application."
"I'd like to see AWS implement consolidated billing for businesses operating under one group."
"Setup is somewhat complex."
"There is a bit of a learning curve. That said, it's likely no different than learning any other cloud."
"With CloudSearch; the service finally autoscales but in excessive time."
"It would be nice to be able to test Direct Connect without having to pay a line."
"Amazon AWS could improve by being more secure and adding more features."
"Heroku had an authentication problem a few months ago, but they solved it."
"Heroku should increase its slug size limits."
"I had an issue recently where my site was down intermittently for unknown reasons. I posted a ticket and 5 days have gone by without any resolution."
"We don't find the pipelines intuitive. The user experience could be better. Having to set up multiple apps, then a pipeline, seems like an overkill on the amount of work to do."
"It's pricing is a little high and could be lowered."
"But I recently got my account suspended because someone abused one of my apps."
"I have an issue with the session server in terms of how it can scale, and where I can put my sessions."
"Heroku doesn't support Docker images on the CI infrastructure."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price can be better."
"It's expensive. It costs you an arm and a leg."
"This is not an expensive product but it would be an improvement if the price were cheaper."
"If I was going to compare the cost of Amazon AWS to Microsoft Azure, they are approximately the same."
"Amazon AWS has pay-as-you-go options available."
"They have a pay-as-you-go subscription."
"It is not the cheapest one, but there is a good ratio between the quality of service and the pricing. Its price is good for me."
"AWS is not an expensive product."
"Its price is very good."
"There is a standard fee for a processing unit, they call them "dynos," and then you pay for add-ons."
"The price of Heroku could be less expensive."
"I rate the tool's pricing a three out of ten."
"The tool is free."
