Centralized schema governance has improved API visibility and now reduces release risks
Apollo GraphOS is a strong platform, but there are a few areas where it could improve. The onboarding experience could be simpler for teams that are new to GraphQL. There are many powerful capabilities available, but it can take some time for new users to understand how everything fits together. I would also appreciate even more customizable dashboards and reporting options. Different teams often care about different metrics, so having greater flexibility in how insights are presented would be useful. From a larger organization perspective, additional guidance around governance and best practices could help teams adopt the platform more consistently across multiple services.

We use the existing services hosted in Microsoft Azure API Management without making any changes. For transformation capabilities, we utilize ADF, Data Factory instead of Microsoft Azure API Management. Regarding security features in Microsoft Azure API Management, we utilize token bearer authentication. As retailers with integration to our channel partners, we haven't experienced any security issues with Microsoft Azure API Management since it isn't exposed to external parties. We use a basic Azure function hosted in Microsoft Azure API Management rather than the integrated developer portal. Tracking analytics and performance analytics in Microsoft Azure API Management is straightforward. We use basic features for performance analytics and log analytics due to additional subscription charges. We enabled log analytics for Microsoft Azure API Management in the past month to investigate issues such as unreachable endpoints or request timeouts.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features of Apollo GraphOS OS for me are its security and authentication processes."
"Apollo GraphOS has significantly enhanced both the developer experience and product delivery timelines by offering a centralized approach to managing GraphQL schemas and services, helping reduce overhead and improve collaboration between frontend and backend teams."
"Apollo GraphOS positively impacts my organization by increasing confidence in API releases."
"Apollo GraphOS has positively impacted our organization by reducing unwanted code and helping us combine multiple services."
"The API management is great."
"The most valuable features are the ease of use and it is a platform that has self-enablement for the customers to be able to register themselves."
"The product probably saved us at least two to four sprints worth of extra work, which would not have achieved the quality, which this PAS provides us, out of the box."
"The Application Gateway we have found to be the most useful in Microsoft Azure API Management. We have integrated the Microsoft Azure API Management with Application Gateway. Application Gateway is a type of load balancer that we are using for the high availability of our API calls."
"The most valuable features are the API and integrations."
"Support is very good. We have a direct line of contact with Microsoft product management's technical support."
"The solution is secure and has all the components that we require."
"Access control is the most valuable aspect, as we are able to deploy multiple APIs and segregate who has access to each one, and that centralized management is what the customer is really looking for."

Cons

"There’s room for improvement in schema collaboration tools, especially in large teams where multiple developers are working on overlapping parts of the API."
"Apollo GraphOS OS is using a detailed project, and it can be time-consuming because it has a lot of data to manage. It sometimes takes longer than three seconds, which can affect loading times and lead to user dissatisfaction. I would like to see improved performance."
"Apollo GraphOS is a strong platform, but there are a few areas where it could improve."
"An area for improvement in Microsoft Azure API Management is deployment, in particular, the deployment of versions in Oryx. The development to production instance isn't adequate for me and needs to be improved. Microsoft Azure API Management lacks automation, which is another area for improvement."
"Documentations for implementing certain product features are very difficult to find"
"They need to work on the third party integrations."
"I did follow the prescribed steps to export our Test subscription setup to import into a production subscription environment, but I was unable to achieve the export within the short amount of time I had to achieve it."
"The portal where we publish the APIs could be improved. Maybe this is because we didn't configure it. It is quite easy to bypass API management because we have a lot of information shared on the portal, where we publish our APIs. I worry there is potential for a security breach in the API publishing. There needs to be more security available on terms of the way we publish them."
"Previously, our company's cloud services were shut down, and we used to take more time to update services, so such issues are areas where improvements are needed."
"Latency is an area that needs improvement, especially for multi-tenant applications."
"From my understanding, there are some constraints around governance and service-to-service intercommunication managing priorities and our own governance."

"Microsoft Azure is an expensive solution not for the large enterprises but for the medium and small."
"This is an expensive solution."
"The price is comparable."
"I rate the solution's pricing between three and four, as it could be more competitive."
"It's pay as you go. The subscription packages have room for different scales. It's calculated by the number of apps or computers you use. You do not have to use the enterprise subscription. These subscriptions have different pricing, so you can find one to meet your needs for scalability."
