Backup coverage has supported immutable protection and now needs a more modern, intuitive interface
IBM Storage Protect is from a previous generation of backup software. In those days, backup software was complex in setting up and complex to manage. The new software, such as Rubrik, is very easy to use and more relatable to younger engineers because its interface design is more similar to Office 365 and the newer controls and labels that we are accustomed to. The difficulty that we now have with IBM Storage Protect is that for this day and age, compared to other products that are out there, it seems complex. If we look back 15 years ago, all enterprise class backup software was complex, so IBM was not any different. However, many of these older systems, such as Commvault, still have the same complaint that they are very complex because they have tried to keep that same interface and the same way it works. This suits them, but it probably needed a complete overhaul to bring it into the ease of use that we have with modern software. However, that upgrade has not been done. IBM Storage Protect has not been upgraded into a modern platform. It still looks a legacy platform.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Virtual Disaster Recovery in version 13 is a game-changer, especially for VMWare shops."
"It allows our backup engineers to build great relationships with customers as they know their data is being protected by best-in-class software."
"Asigra’s multi-tenancy feature is most valuable as it allows the company to on-sell a private cloud backup and recovery solution to existing customers."
"Asigra's agent-less capabilities make it a very convenient solution to implement."
"Smooth integration into customer's environment, interactive UI."
"Asigra is a cost effective solution and very competitive in the market."
"Simplicity, very easy to restore user data, means that we don't have to request off site tapes to be delivered to the office, can easily access the cloud data and restore most data within minutes."
"There are two primary improvements of the Asigra platform with the recent version 13.1 SP1: Virtualization: a tremendous variety of data protection solutions for virtual machines, and Cloud-2-Cloud for Office 365, Google, Amazon, etc., making this a full package of data protection platform."
"In terms of Spectrum Protect, it runs very well; we have run it in certain clients for the best part of 10 years, and it runs very well for us."
"It is very stable after deployment and will perform in a steady state."
"The feature we have found most valuable is when you want to integrate it with a Tape Library and then do the DRM life cycle, that is when it works the best."
"Performance and recoveries are better. Our clients and customers are happier with the performance of it."
"We can use it with any storage for the back-end to save data."
"We are able to run it in an enterprise quite easily with one or two resources."
"TSM provides ease of use for customers to recover from any type of data disaster."
"We are talking about a stable solution which boasts good performance and security."

Cons

"I think Asigra still needs to simplify their GUI."
"The setup and configuration of this product is quite complex."
"More integration with leading storage solutions."
"I wouldn't describe it as a scalable solution."
"Technical Support: 5/10, Due to different timezones it would always be difficult to get hold of a tech."
"The UI could do with a facelift."
"Some more work on reporting tools is required to help get better auto-generated information and analysis from the system."
"There are improvements required with the virtualization solution, I'm sure we will see a significant change in 2017."
"It's adequate for my core banking, however, I am looking for another solution for all systems. It is not compatible with other operating systems like Windows or Linux, and lacks a consolidated dashboard from Browser Spectrum."
"Probably educating the virtual group who are not as used to the product."
"In terms of features, they've got it all covered. The features they have are quite good. The only downside to it is that it is for an enterprise or big organization. In my opinion, it is not for a small business."
"We would like to see cloud integration."
"It can be improved for large file systems with many files. Spectrum Protect can restore large files very well, but if you're restoring millions of little files, it is not as great. At one point, we tried to implement the VMware module with it, and it was awful and terrible. I don't know if that has improved. If it hasn't, this would be one big improvement."
"I need two separate solutions for virtual and physical systems. I need IBM Spectrum Protect Plus for virtual systems and Spectrum Protect for physical systems and that's a pain. It would be an improvement if they were combined."
"Its price can be better. It is very expensive."
"We cannot take VMware backups for our banking data center environment."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price of Asigra could improve, it is expensive. We have purchased an annual license."
"Asigra is priced competitively, but requires technical expertise to operate, optimize, and maintain its services."
"The licensing fees are between $8,000 and $10,000 per year."
"There may be an advantage to going with IBM in terms of pricing. They have a pay-as-you-grow policy, so there is no need to take one license for the entire datacenter. You can start with small licenses and then grow, and pay, as you use more."
"Spectrum Protect is not expensive, and it is simple to use."
"The different license models can give good benefits to the end customer."
"The licensing is varied. If we have small environments (not many TB being managed) it is best to license by PVUs (depending on the number of cores of the machine). If we manage many TBs we look at licensing by capacity which allows us to use all the agents of the product."
"We chose IBM Spectrum Protect, because they actually have something called MSP pricing, which means managed services provider pricing. The pricing was attractive, and it seems to be a platform that IBM is totally investing on in terms of new functions and new capabilities."
"We pay for a terabyte license to support our backend usage."
"The licensing fees are on a yearly basis, which for us it is about R400,000 (approximately $27,000 USD)."
