Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Flexibility of development; the developer can use various JavaScript APIs for development and most or all of the components are plug and play, so customization is easily achievable most of the time."
"Provides an easy way to integrate with the architectural environment."
"The most valuable feature of Camunda Platform is its Microservices architecture, which is easily integrable with APIs."
"For an internal project, this is a solution that you can install and have up and running quite quickly."
"The use of Java is a big plus for our intern developers, and Camunda scales well, as many of our departments are already using it in production with dedicated teams."
"The flexibility is great."
"I am happy with Camunda BPM."
"The solution is easily compatible with HTML forms and HTML language programming and that is the most significant part."
"The integration with almost any language, product, and even human tasks, is valuable. It's very seamless to integrate into existing systems. It doesn't require you to rewrite a lot of your existing system. That's where it really stands out."

Cons

"Yes, the servers are not as efficient as required."
"The business model could be easier to understand."
"Probably one area I look forward to has to do with AI and how Camunda sees the AI angle on workflow."
"There are a few things that I'm missing. For instance, the user interface creator, which I know other systems have, like Aurea or Lombardi, which are IBM solutions."
"Generally, the price could be better, as well as the licensing fees."
"The cockpit features of the Camunda Platform can be improved to make it a bit more user-friendly, in terms of providing a bit more user experience for non-technical users. There could be some additional documentation added."
"The initial setup can be complex for business users."
"They have a migration plugin that can be used to migrate from one BPM to another BPM. It is in the beta stage since last year."
"I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"Generally, the price could be better, as well as the licensing fees."
"There were some features that were only available in the paid version."
"There is a bit of scope for improvement in how the licensing and pricing are done. They are based on the number of processing instances you execute on the cluster... but on the self-hosted mode, the pricing model should be customized."
"I tried to get some information about buying the license for the solution, but I found it kind of hard to understand the business model."
"It is less cost-prohibitive than other solutions on the market. This solution was in our price range."
"We use a community version."
"The product is expensive for a small or medium-sized company."
"Camunda's pricing is good."
