The service level and automated capacity manager functions allow us to control priorities, support SLA's and manage our 4HRA and reduce MLC for some software bills.
There currently is a WUI that allows an operator a single pane of glass to see how TM is performing to meet service policies within a JESMAS environment. This is a new feature and multiple individuals have expressed desire to not only see real time monitoring, but the ability to historically go back at least several hours or possibly an entire day to review history.

Automation has improved alerts and file handling but script-based setup still needs simplification
OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is the automation tool I use. I think OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is good for creating complex rules because it's coding, but it takes time to learn how to use it. OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence works well if you know the syntax very well and you have experience in creating scripts or REXX syntax; it would be very good and is a good tool, but it takes time to learn, so that is for experienced staff to work with. I would rate the product a six from one to ten. I cannot think of any additional features in the next release of OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Enabled me to solve production problems faster or even avoid them preemptively with warnings."
"MainView has enabled me, in the past, to solve production problems faster, or even avoid them preemptively with warnings."
"The integration of IMS commands is very useful, because you do not have to switch to another tool to problem solve solutions."
"Batch smoothing our 4HRA and implementation of group capacity profiles has allowed us to run sub-capacity and lower our MLC."
"For the mainframe it's a really good automation tool, it's been really solid for what we needed it for, and it's been flexible and scalable across the enterprise."
"Once automatic IPL has been defined, anyone can perform an IPL with very little intervention. We know that all of the components will be started correctly."
"The benefit is that the ROI, since it's 35 years old, is coming back over and over and over."
"What I like about it personally is that I can go out and interrupt what's going on and bring a job down if I need to, and bring it back up."
"It alerts the operators when it is time to repair the communications and the IPLs."
"For what it was produced for, it's an excellent product; it's done everything that we wanted to do with the product and more, which has been a really big help for us."
"It's a very stable product. I very much like the SSM stuff in it. The rules engine, it's awesome."
"OPS/REXX is valuable because it allows us almost unlimited flexibility in automating our system."

Cons

"More visualisation and support for mobile devices would be good."
"More visualisation and support for mobile devices would be good."
"An expansion for distributed systems would be great, but probably not workable."
"We're missing the boat. We don't have a graphical display and we need something beyond just pretty PC pictures for the other departments."
"Scalability is zero. It cannot be scaled because of its age."
"It needs to have more compatibility/interfaces to other vendors’ products."
"It definitely needs more web-based interface, to be more mobile-open. More APIs, more open source to it."
"One thing that comes to mind is the MQ interface. The last time we tried to use it, it seemed a little clunky."
"I think some of their built-in functions are short on functionality."
"The GUI interface could be improved, but that is coming. They are working on that."
"It’s a complex product. The initial installation is easy, but implementing various functions is a constant process."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"If you already use other products from BMC, you might be able to get a package deal from BMC's sales department."
