Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

Enables us to present data and objects visually, in diagrams, and to make them available via the web. Also enables web-based editing of data.
We tried their collaborative web modeling and we used it with a few people but we tend to not use that piece. We tend to collaborate with the people and then my team of architects draws up the diagram using the modeling tool. We then iterate through those. I would like to use it, but it was a little clunky when they first rolled it out. Overall, it's more about the company having room for improvement. What they need to do is to consolidate more of their products. For example, I was just looking and I couldn't figure out what erwin DT is. It's on the website but it would help if they could put information together and make it more clear as to what products they have and how they work with other things. I hear them talking in the support forums and, when I talk to the representative, they say they're going to do a bunch of stuff but it seems the progress is slow. The changes they need to make are to take their old, legacy product, which we use, and focus a lot on it so they can transform it into a modern cloud tool so that we have fewer little pieces to deal with. They could also fix their security model. It's very confusing to get new people onto the tool and to make sure that your content isn't being exposed to the wrong people.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is good for data models."
"There's this graphic that tells you how many lines or how many tickets are in each step. In that way, you know where you stand. I find this feature very valuable."
"The most valuable features are the workflow, the task list, and the modeler where we use VPN."
"The most valuable feature of Camunda Platform is its Microservices architecture, which is easily integrable with APIs."
"EC2 makes scaling horizontally incredibly easy, especially when working under the ECS service."
"We evaluated Appian for my current job but it's less beneficial if your aim is to have your customers at the front end, and we took the middle road when we went with Camunda and the flexibility it offers is a big advantage for us."
"We are using the BPMN engine of Camunda; we are not using the user interface. We are using just the engine, the back end of this. For us, it is working quite well."
"One valuable feature of Camunda is that it's an open BPM, so it was easier for users and developers to work together to define the rules and define the process, given their BPM and standard architecture."
"This is the first time that we have a central repository in our company where we can see and look at all the legacy applications which are used to serve the world."
"I can send images in the PDF form, along with the relationships and the associations that are a very important part of what we do. It can show what is affected and what is impacted by a certain change in one area of the system architecture or enterprise architecture. I can very quickly draw those issues and topics to the fore."
"Workgroup Repository collection of data models allows research across models without worry about platform incompatibilities and provides easy KPIs about corporate data assets."
"You can use different kinds of diagrams to represent the architecture setting."
"The most valuable features for us are impact analysis, where I can easily visualize the impact of change."
"Erwin has enabled us to build and manage a portfolio of over 1,000 large data models across more than 60 lines of business, many of which are related and synchronized."
"It is a customizable tool that allows you to do a lot of architectural modeling for customers, and you can use different kinds of diagrams to represent the architecture setting."
"The ERwin tool helped to reduce the rate of design and deployment errors and increased the ease of validation."

Cons

"It is not difficult to change existing processes. The difficulty was in integration, for example, to call an external web API, and in the security capabilities, to use a vault for secrets. That was difficult."
"The initial set up could be simplified, it's complex."
"Initially, installation was challenging, but recent improvements have made it much easier."
"Support is an area that is in need of improvement."
"I have faced problems in bringing up the Cockpit in terms of GUI processes."
"I do think that Camunda can try to do better when it comes to solving the complexities of all the products in its software stack."
"It would be helpful if the solution had additional out-of-the-box activities."
"I would like to see better pricing."
"erwin Evolve by Quest could have additional features to manage the architecture of enterprises and businesses."
"If it had fewer features to model all kinds of architecture, it would be less complicated."
"Would like to see canonical modeling supported for web services."
"Add some ability to do conditional Visualization on the models and in reports (some ideas) – maybe as a specialized Theme or Diagram or Display."
"I would like it to be easier to make changes in development/testing and then deploy them into production more easily; especially when you have multiple web servers."
"Few clients looking are going with Evolve these days because I don't think they even appear on Gartner's Magic Quadrant."
"The way that we are using it for application management, we have several KPIs. We want to follow and monitor them regarding a number of solutions. We cannot calculate this today. We would like real-time calculations along with the KPIs in order to improve the user experience. We would like the tool to be able to display this, not only as signals, but as charts."
"The solution's integration capabilities with other tools in our system has not been all that well done."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have an annual subscription to this solution."
"We are using the open-source version, free of charge. We didn't bother with the enterprise features."
"The evaluation of my customers on pricing is that it is reasonable."
"It is less cost-prohibitive than other solutions on the market. This solution was in our price range."
"The cost of this solution is better than some competing products."
"Licensing costs are anywhere from $80,000 to $100,000 USD per year."
"In Africa, the cost of deployment is an important factor to consider since it adds to the overall cost. This might be the only drawback to using it."
"We are using the community version. There is no licensing cost."
"I think erwin is quite expensive. I have difficulty selling the portal, in fact."
"Unless you are a one person shop – always go with the Workgroup edition and Concurrent licensing."
"The licensing enables you to differentiate between people who edit the content and the people who consume it. We are able to keep the licensing costs down by keeping the "contributor" licenses to a minimum, and we then just roll out the content in a read-only version for the rest of our users."
"The cost is something like $15,000, per license. But I haven't looked at those numbers in three years. It was over $100,000 to initially set everything up and get it all configured."
"On a yearly basis, our licensing costs are 50,000 euro. There are no additional costs because we are on a SaaS model."
"I estimate that we pay between $40,000 and $50,000 a year for the solution, not including the upfront costs to buy things the first time."
"Yearly, our cost is €100,000."
