Unified security and sd-wan have improved uptime and cut wan costs for multi-site branches
Users report stability issues in certain versions, which requires regular updates. Real-world attacks have also highlighted the need for urgent patching of vulnerabilities.Fortinet FortiGate, while a powerful and feature-rich web firewall, could improve in areas like firmware stability, documentation, and ease of use. The learning curve can be steep for some users. For beginners, support quality can vary, and frequent updates with occasional vulnerabilities call for careful patch management. However, once Fortinet FortiGate is configured, it remains highly reliable and efficient. Customer support needs improvement, as I find it very slow, with reports from other users reflecting that customer support is inadequate.

Good intrusion prevention, firewall, and VPN capabilities
Check Point Power-1 (EOL) has reached the end of its useful life, yet at the time, they could to make some changes such as: * Integration in the cloud. It is the new trend, however, Check Point has already contemplated this and already has its own cloud device. * Automation. As the automatic creation and application of policies, this would have been very beneficial. * Multi-factor authentication would have been a plus in security at the time. They must also make some improvements in their support departments since they do not comply with the SLAs that they provide.

Rapid VPN setup has connected offices in minutes and brings live insights for proactive issue control
What I appreciate the most about Netgate pfSense is the ease and straightforward nature of the platform. I can set up a new office in less than 10 minutes. The benefits of using Netgate pfSense are that I can set up VPNs in less than two to three minutes, and then just deploy the file across my networks, where everybody would be connected in less than an hour. The dashboards of Netgate pfSense bring all the necessary information that I need at a glance, and it is actually a live update every three to five seconds. It is spotless, and I have been able to catch issues before they hit operations.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The key features include SD-WAN, firewall use, intrusion prevention, intrusion detection, and application control."
"The security features are about the best that I've seen anywhere."
"The IPS and the application control feature are the most valuable."
"The solution is used in my company since its management is very comfortable"
"FortiGate's threat detection capability is excellent."
"The SD-WAN function is very developed. It has SD-WAN functionality with security features in one device. We can manage from one single console SD-WAN and the security policy."
"I never encountered any stability issues; it is a very stable product."
"The solution can scale."
"The VPN allows users to connect remotely and securely."
"In my opinion it is right product at enterprise level network to protect the user and server from external and internal threats and attacks"
"PfSense is relatively easy to set up and just runs. It's easy to use."
"The most valuable features of pfSense are the reports, monitoring, filtration, and blocking incoming and outgoing traffic."
"The redundancy and scalability ARE very nice."
"The most valuable features of pfSense are the high availability that easily allows failover to a backup unit and the Snort integration with pfSense and WireGuard."
"The initial setup was simple and fast."
"pfSense is good for a company that is looking for a solution with a reasonable cost for implementation."
"OpenVPN, IPsec, DHCP, and DNS are the most valuable features."
"Firewall system for small, medium, and large data networks. It allows you to provide security to your environment: DMZ networks, LAN, WAN, etc."

Cons

"Its reporting and pricing need improvement."
"They really need to work on their support."
"In the next release, maybe the documentation on how to use this solution could be improved."
"In the balance between links feature normally you can just choose one option to balance. It would be better for the solution to have more than one option, preferably three."
"It is complicated to manage different kinds of on-premise boxes."
"I encountered several strange issues in v5.0 (and earlier) OS versions. Strange anomalies like random reloads, VPN instability and unexplained policy changes."
"FortiGate IPS is somewhat pricey compared to other solutions. There is also room for improvement in terms of the radio signals. The FortiGate WiFi has a relatively short range. I've found there is a lag in its zero-day malware response that could be better, and FortiGate could integrate better with other brands of equipment or identity management solutions."
"Its reporting capabilities can be improved. It should have some out-of-the-box reporting capabilities and some degree of customization. The basic reporting that it currently has is not sufficient to create more usable reports. It needs some sort of out-of-the-box reporting. They try to make customers purchase FortiAnalyzer for this kind of reporting, which is an additional cost. Other firewall vendors, such as SonicWall and Sophos, provide this sort of reporting without any additional cost."
"Multi-factor authentication would have been a plus in security at the time."
"I have to pay Check Point for every new service I integrate in the firewall and it also has license related issue which needs to renew every years."
"Maybe in their package manager, it would be nice to see which packages are officially from pfSense and which are community driven."
"Some of the features I am looking for are still not there in pfSense, like, for example, content control. Because I have kids, I want to control the content or what they watch. There is a feature in pfSense called pfBlocker, but it is limited."
"This product needs improvements with respect to reporting and auditing."
"It is not centrally managed, where you log into the website and can see all your services there. We would like to be able to see all the configurations from a central interface on all our pfSenses."
"The solution requires a lot of administration."
"The product could offer more integrated plugins."
"Multi-appliance monitoring and management, like a single pane of glass, would be very nice to have. A centralized management console would help us."
"Many people have problems setting up the web cache for the web system."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The cost of Fortinet FortiGate is competitive and not expensive compared to other enterprise- grade solutions. On average, the license cost per year is around seventy percent of the firewall's purchase price."
"It is not expensive as compared to Cisco."
"The product is a little bit expensive."
"Compared to Palo Alto, which we have used in the past, pricing and licensing are okay."
"Setup cost may be not so low, as you expect, because it depends on different factors, but TCO for 5 years may pleasantly surprise you."
"The pricing is better compared to other solutions like Check Point, Arista, or Cisco."
"Price-wise, it's at a good price point for our market."
"It is too expensive for us. My organization is very small, and we have a total of ten users. We have three internal users and seven external users. The FortiGate 100D series is too expensive for renewing the licenses."
Information not available
"I am using the community version of the solution and it is priced well. There is a cost of learning how to use the solution, if it was free it would be better."
"Netgate pfSense is fairly priced."
"We just have a yearly support subscription."
"The solution's pricing is comparable to other products."
"The tool is flexible; even the free, open-source version offers many features. From a cost perspective, even the subscription model for commercial support isn't too costly. However, it's important to have someone knowledgeable about Netgate pfSense to take advantage of it. While there are online resources, a professional or someone experienced can get much more out of the solution. I've heard that the IPS/IDS licenses and other features can be costly."
"I use the product's free version."
"When it comes to Netgate pfSense, I use the basic TAC Lite license, which comes for about 100 USD."
"The solution software does not require a license, it is free. The support contract is about $600 dollars."
