Enables customers to manage security effortlessly with intuitive features and easy integration
In terms of improvements for Fortinet FortiGate, they could offer evaluation licenses, as compared to Meraki, which provides a 90-day evaluation. In Fortinet FortiGate, they do not provide standard evaluation licenses; instead, we need to request them from the OEM through the account manager for POCs. If we want to conduct a demo, we need to work with real hardware. In comparison to Cisco, we have DCloud, which helps with providing demos to customers, but in Meraki, I need to reach out to them, book a lab, and they need to provide all the hardware. I need remote access and L3 engineers to program it; only then can I offer a real-time demo to the customer.

Single-pane management has simplified firewall control and has improved risk mitigation
I would not say that Fortinet FortiOS is not very scalable. Generally, what happens is that for enterprises, we hire consultants who do the capacity planning and sizing to determine what kind of firewalls to put in place. At the same time, it is not only the number of users; it also depends on the number of WAN links coming in and everything, because we have been using Fortinet for bandwidth shaping and many other bandwidth-related functions. They should improve their machine learning AI capabilities of Fortinet FortiOS because there is too much competition. Other players are also improving and making a lot of changes in their UI and overall operating system.

The best features IPFire offers include its very intuitive nature because, even though it has a Linux back-end, in terms of configuration, it has a very rich GUI interface. The GUI and configuration features of IPFire have made my work easier and more efficient because their positioning and the sequence with which I follow is easy. In terms of all the processes, what you need to do at first and the next thing that you need to do is clear. The GUI is well arranged in sequential order, so you can follow that from whatever you want to do until you get the target objective. IPFire includes features with a very robust and rich community that is very much valid in terms of content. IPFire has positively impacted my organization by giving us some mileage. At least, a lot of organizations now know that we have a solution that can deliver the same value.

Pros

"The overall features of Fortinet FortiGate SWG are good."
"Reliability is the best feature. We faced some issues when we were setting it up, but the service, portal, and administration are good."
"The interface is very good."
"The most valuable feature of FortiGate is FortiView which provides proactive monitoring."
"The initial setup is straightforward."
"Run Script is the best tool to use in Fortinet FortiGate with multiple environments."
"It is a good source for firewall protection."
"The most significant aspect of IPS is self-explanatory as it primarily focuses on intrusion prevention, which is crucial for Fortinet's internal outbreak prevention efforts and ensuring compliance on endpoint devices."
"Anytime I have thought of a possible feature I'd like added to the solution, it seems the developers are on the same page and it is available within a few months."
"Fortinet FortiOS is highly stable."
"This solution is very stable, more stable than SonicWall, with a big difference in stability on the VPN site-to-site and on the DPI SSL for HTTPS communication."
"It has worked well for us overall, and we are happy with its capabilities."
"The most valuable feature of Fortinet FortiOS network segregation, UTM, and antivirus, freight management protection, such as DDoS. Additionally, the CLI and the GUI are easy to use. The architecture makes sense, and the command in the CLI are organized well. They have quite a lot of features are easy to use, and are user-friendly. Any novice can use Fortinet FortiOS without an issue."
"Firewall and overall management are valuable features."
"The interface is easy to understand, so when there are threats you get alerts. It's quite intuitive, but if you are ever confused they have instructional videos. For example, if you don't understand a graph there's a link to a video that explains what the graph means. It makes it very user-friendly."
"The technical support has been very helpful and they have local language support for Taiwan."
"I would rate the stability as ten out of ten for IPFire."
"Regarding IPFire's AI capabilities, I think they are quite focused; in all the deployments I have done, I have not had any incidents or breaches."
"IPFire has prevented any kind of hacking and enables us to comply with customer requirements."

Cons

"Small models (up to FG-90) are build on SoC (System on a Chip), so they need to be mounted in places with enough airflow and right temperature, otherwise they could hang, slow down traffic processing, but more often you just can't log in to the device's web-interface (reboot won't help you until it cools down)."
"Fortinet renewal prices for all models are too high, so they should offer discounts for customers on renewal."
"The solution is very expensive."
"Some of the web policy reports could be improved."
"The routing capability on the FortiGate devices has room for improvement."
"There could be improvements in the mathematical algorithms used for behavior analytics of traffic."
"The representative from the vendor seems to know the basics of the product but when it comes to troubleshooting he seems to lack information."
"The firmware updates are sometimes not stable. The stability issues can vary, sometimes happening once a month or quarterly. New firmware updates can occasionally introduce bugs, causing some policies to fail. We then have to raise a ticket, and Fortinet usually provides a fix within a few days."
"The additional features I would like to see included in the next release is better troubleshooting and reporting."
"FortiOS's stability could be better."
"The pricing of the product is too high. They should work to lower it."
"Their technical support needs improvement."
"Fortinet FortiOS could improve by having better authentication methods with Microsoft or Google Services."
"Technical support could be more qualified and offer a quicker turnaround."
"FortiOS could provide a more detailed analysis of the network and connected devices."
"I want to see a better integration or a better integration with the endpoint protection or with EDR with the security life cycle."
"Accessing the internet was a bit complicated."
"The graphical interface could be much better."
"I would rate IPFire 8 out of 10 because I do not think there is any solution anywhere in the world that is 100 percent efficient."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is better compared to other solutions like Check Point, Arista, or Cisco."
"The product is not very expensive."
"Its price is reasonable. They have a clear pricing policy. It is not complicated by the number of VPN users at a time. We know what the price is. The yearly subscription for the security license is rather high, but it is all included for whatever number of users you have and the kind of functions you need."
"The price of Fortinet FortiGate is reasonable."
"Its price is normal. If I compare it with other vendors, such as Palo Alto, it's normal. Palo Alto is expensive."
"The solution requires a license annually, it is not a user license, you can have as many users as your want. I must renew the license regularly per device."
"At the time we bought them, I was satisfied with their pricing; I don't know how the new pricing will be."
"The product is a little bit expensive."
"The Fortinet solutions can be a bit expensive."
"I am on a two-year contract and I pay annually for Fortinet FortiOS."
"A yearly subscription might be around $20,000 to $30,000."
"We pay an annual license fee. It is rather expensive so I would like to perhaps see a drop in price in the future."
"The program is expensive."
"A medium 100 or 200 Series box costs around $3000, and the software cost is around 55% of the hardware cost."
"The solution is cost effective. I would rate the pricing a five out of ten."
"There is a license required for the solution and the price is fair."
