Efficient monitoring and alerting enhance operational insights
With Grafana Enterprise Stack, we can identify issues that New Relic cannot help with. While New Relic requires purchase and supports frontend and backend components, Grafana Enterprise Stack helps identify where issues are occurring. When we need to deep dive into issues, we use New Relic to trace transactions and determine where maximum impact occurs, whether in core size, DB side, or frontend components that slow performance. We first evaluate with Grafana Enterprise Stack, then move to New Relic if we identify performance degradation, such as DB queries taking too much time. Grafana Enterprise Stack responds to queries within 6 to 12 hours. They contact users through email immediately when available. Similarly, New Relic follows the same pattern, responding immediately when requests are raised and resolving issues promptly.

Real-time alerts have reduced server outage impact and support fast incident response
In the dashboard, if they could show a little more metrics regarding the application and related things, that would be how New Relic could be improved. Currently, there are things showing from the server level and application level, but it can be improved. That is what I felt. Regarding user interface, I do not feel much concern, but for some kind of issues when we are trying to get support from the New Relic team, their SLA seems to be long. They are taking seven to ten working days for resolving some kind of scenario or issue. That is a bit difficult for us. If they could improve the customer support by reducing their SLA within three to five days, if they could remediate everything, that will be so much helpful. When it comes to the customer support part, I felt they need to be a little more improved on that part. The support overall is good, but they can improve. That is the reason I have given it eight out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Grafana Enterprise Stack is a powerful open-source platform with robust capabilities in data visualizations, dashboard creations, and alerting."
"The tool's most valuable feature is real-time monitoring. It helps in securing the application or the node by allowing us to monitor and manage resource consumption during peak times. For instance, from 10 AM to 2 PM, we may experience high memory utilization. It helps us to solve these issues."
"The ability to graph actual, live, or on-the-fly activity is valuable; it is an added value to work with Grafana Enterprise Stack and to display results or logs, which are huge in nature, in graphical characters."
"It is very easy to deploy and integrate with any application or infrastructure layer."
"Our productivity has improved with its use."
"Grafana has enough features around dashboard management. It's got enough plugins to create your dashboards."
"It is truly reliable."
"The most valuable features for us are dashboards; we can dashboard anything that we can think of, we can dashboard and measure."
"What I like best about New Relic APM is its user interface because it's simple. The most valuable feature of New Relic APM is end-to-end monitoring."
"Customer Service: Excellent. Technical Support: Excellent."
"There are many valuable features in New Relic APM; we developed some software applications and we are able to monitor the errors very easily, and their log security retention is very good."
"The solution offers good documentation."
"The most valuable features of New Relic are the reports and ease of use."
"From the perspective of effort and time taken while identifying issues and resolution, we have gained a lot."
"New Relic is highly scalable and its build quality is very easy for handling to startup, enterprise, scale up, and workloads."
"I find the error monitoring of IIS web applications to be extremely useful."

Cons

"Grafana Enterprise Stack is complex and not easy or simple."
"The connection between metrics, logs, and traces could be improved. Currently, one needs to ingest labels and timestamps for them to be connected, however, drilling down sometimes takes time."
"If Grafana Enterprise Stack could display transaction queries in dashboard format similar to New Relic, it would provide more options and capabilities for users."
"They could use more small tutorials to explain a bit about how Grafana works."
"The solution should include integration with Power BI."
"I find Grafana really hard to configure. It's difficult to build the dashboard, and it's non-intuitive. In my opinion, it's very difficult to work with Grafana."
"In terms of what Grafana provides, it just provides the charting tools. Everything else is third-party."
"I have encountered occasional issues with false inputs or incorrect data in Grafana."
"New Relic can get pricey for larger organizations."
"We would like a dashboard feature to be created for this product. This would allow us to monitor both the front and back-end of our UI's performance, and then report on it."
"One issue is cost."
"One thing that we noticed was that historical information was only for a limited period, which was not helpful in certain scenarios. For example, if I want to size my system for an event for New Year or Christmas season based on the historical data, I won't be able to find the historical data. Currently, the data is limited to three months. It would be helpful if they can provide historical data for a longer duration so that we can plan our system accordingly."
"There are times when you restart the engines and the servers have a unique ID for the host and you need to remove the server. It is difficult because some are on-premise and others are production hosts. Having downtime is not very good when updating. However, it is not a constant issue."
"I would like a feature where I can turn off alerting at a policy level. Thus, when a policy is inactive, I can shut down all of my alerts within the policy."
"I have logged a bug in their Ping Monitor within Synthetics and I need more improvement in this area."
"The solution needs to have staging."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I use the tool's free license."
"Pricing is better with New Relic APM than Dynatrace."
"I rate the product price a five on a scale of one to ten, where one means cheap, and ten means very expensive."
"The pricing model is a little confusing for beginners. They find it a little expensive, and if you are using it already, then that is not good."
"They gave us aggressive discounts when they were brought in for the first time, but they have also kept them for the year-on-year renewals, which has been absolutely fine."
"The pricing is fine."
"If I remember it correctly, the pricing was based on the core, and the monthly subscription used to cost us $1,500 or $2,000. We had pre-prod and production services. Costing was different for pre-prod and production. For pre-prod, it was 40% less than the production service cost. It was a combined package."
"This solution required a license and it is better than some other competitors."
"The price was one of the reasons we chose this solution."
