It's easy to setup and the plugins are easy to write. When we need to, the threshold is easy to change It would be nice to have a centralized client-settings management. At the moment, the client settings have to be changed individually. I've used it since 2011. The deployment of the new server…

Central monitoring has improved outage alerts and now needs smarter detection and modern dashboards
Regarding the automated network topology and mapping feature in SolarWinds NPM, I am not satisfied with it. For static monitoring, it is acceptable. However, if it is possible, I would need a feature in SolarWinds in the future for some kind of malfunctioning detection, such as malware attacks or that type of environment. We did not have any facility to detect that in SolarWinds. I think it would be better to incorporate those types of features. Regarding customization options in SolarWinds, the ability to customize the dashboard has room for improvement. The dashboard is quite old, and we need some improvement in it. Nowadays, we have multiple tools with AI-based monitoring and web-based dashboards. SolarWinds also has a web-based dashboard, but I think there is scope for improvement in the UI. There may be other areas I would like to improve in SolarWinds NPM.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It's easy to setup and the plugins are easy to write."
"Everything has been complete and stable for our needs over the past four years."
"SolarWinds' network and server application monitoring features are strong."
"One of my clients is a bank; SolarWinds is primarily used in banking to limit network downtime to less than one or two minutes, with all the ATMs connected so the bank can respond quickly when the network is down."
"It's very easy to scale; the scalability is brilliant, and if you need additional monitoring resources or need to plug in your secondary data center, it takes thirty minutes and is easy to use."
"We have completely eliminated any blind spots in the operation of our core networks, applications, and platforms."
"The most common feedback I receive as a consultant is how the product ultimately finds issues and bottlenecks in the enterprise that the engineers were previously unaware existed."
"Utilize this product to its full potential, NOC will find it very useful and easy to manage."
"SolarWinds helps us have visibility to the most relevant issues in our network and makes our problem solving process much faster and easier."

Cons

"Deploying an agent leaves much to be desired."
"If we go for the NT license, then we have to purchase the NPM, Network Performance Monitor; that is a dependency."
"The integration with the APIs and the web servers deployed can definitely be improved."
"Complex and overly detailed setup."
"SolarWinds is not an all-in-compassing product. We are looking to change away from this solution because of the documentation and the solution doesn't have enough integration in our country."
"SolarWinds needs to be improved such that it is on par with the leading products in the market."
"The only real caveat that we have or that I have an issue with is when I go on vacation, it's a little hard for me to go and modify alerts so that I don't get alerted about things when I'm on vacation."
"SolarWinds NPM can be very slow at times. The database optimization can be done to improve the product performance."
"The solution could improve in many areas, such as the marketing and description of the products, providing areas of improvement, cloud capabilities, and being able to be more streamlined with the current integration points with other applications."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"USD $15,000 annually for maintenance."
"I’d suggest that people be aware that licensing has tiers."
"The NPM component of the system costs approximately $1,000 USD per year."
"The cost is based on the number of nodes, so it is expensive when you have a lot of them."
"The pricing needs to be improved. It is too high. One full engine costs around $10 000, which is why we don't have high availability right now."
"Though I don't remember the price for SolarWinds NPM, its price is somewhat okay when you compare it with other tools in the market. The price isn't too high and isn't too low, so it's okay."
"It is relatively inexpensive compared to other products in the same category."
"I think that the cost has risen, but the functionality and versatility is way above other products."
