Backup coverage has supported immutable protection and now needs a more modern, intuitive interface
IBM Storage Protect is from a previous generation of backup software. In those days, backup software was complex in setting up and complex to manage. The new software, such as Rubrik, is very easy to use and more relatable to younger engineers because its interface design is more similar to Office 365 and the newer controls and labels that we are accustomed to. The difficulty that we now have with IBM Storage Protect is that for this day and age, compared to other products that are out there, it seems complex. If we look back 15 years ago, all enterprise class backup software was complex, so IBM was not any different. However, many of these older systems, such as Commvault, still have the same complaint that they are very complex because they have tried to keep that same interface and the same way it works. This suits them, but it probably needed a complete overhaul to bring it into the ease of use that we have with modern software. However, that upgrade has not been done. IBM Storage Protect has not been upgraded into a modern platform. It still looks a legacy platform.

Ensures high availability, disaster recovery, and data protection for Oracle databases through features like real-time data synchronization, automatic failover and zero data loss
Oracle Data Guard stands out by providing heavy-duty features that enable connecting multiple standby databases to a single production database. Oracle supports up to eight standby databases, offering a level of redundancy and scalability that other platforms cannot match. Implementing Oracle Data Guard ensures the protection and integrity of your data, even in the event of a disaster. With Data Guard, Oracle guarantees zero data loss, providing peace of mind for organizations relying on their data for critical operations. Data Guard offers multiple protection modes, each serving different needs. One such mode is active-active, where both the production and standby databases are actively accessible. In the event of a failure, seamless switchover occurs without disrupting client sessions, as they remain unaware of the transition between databases.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature for data recovery in IBM Spectrum Protect is its database protection capabilities."
"The solution is very stable. It is one of the most important features that we look for in a product before putting it into the market and when establishing a strategy with our customers."
"Spectrum Protect's best feature is that I can use it practically anywhere, on any platform, and for any servers or clients."
"The best part of this solution is that it just works."
"The platform’s most valuable feature is its ability to verify the recoverability of backups."
"It seems very scalable and robust. It can do what we require it to do."
"The amount of data that it protects with very little storage by doing incremental forever is one of its most valuable features."
"The tool proves invaluable in scenarios where systems need recovery, such as restoring damaged data."
"It is a top-notch product, super stable, making it our go-to for internal operations."
"The solution has been stable so far."
"Another valuable feature is the possibility of backing up the database from the standby database instead of the primary database, to avoid backup process overhead in the primary system."
"If you have a problem with your primary site and can't access your primary database, you can continue working with the database that you have as standby on the other site, by changing its role to primary."
"The most valuable features are the backup and restore. With this in place along with the clustering, the database is safe from hacking, hardware failure, power failures, and system crashes."
"The solution is quite stable. We haven't experienced any bugs, glitches, or crashes. We find it to be quite reliable."
"We use Data Guard for online replication from data center, to data center for high availability. This is the most important feature."
"Backup and application continuity are most valuable."

Cons

"The solution's initial setup process wasn't easy...The solution is overly complicated in terms of architecture, especially compared to other tools in the market."
"For the database side, it does not have object level recovery."
"I would like to see more technical training online. Sometimes, it is a little bit difficult to find, or that I do not really know what I am looking for as somebody who is starting off finding their learning curve."
"Needs more support for non-mainstream databases, in particular PostgreSQL, SQL, and MySQL."
"The solution is expensive."
"We are having a balance issue between the reclamation and the backup function. It has to take the space back from the tapes before it can record to those tapes, but sometimes those two processes are overlapping."
"The software is very complicated. You have to do a lot of configurations to build a server, and you would need to backup and restore."
"The initial setup is complex."
"For Italian medium-sized companies, the main challenge lies in the cost associated with licenses."
"The database administration needs improvement. With Oracle, we have a lot of features for administrating data, but it might be too many. It needs to be simplified. It should be automated. Looking at Enterprise Manager, there are too many KPIs in place."
"The only difficult part is the cost factor, licensing. Another area of improvement is support."
"There is an issue with their application on ODG. There were a lot of edits in the logs. Sometimes, we only get a little cue from the Data Guard Broker logs if there's an issue."
"One thing that can be improved is the GUI. It would be good to have a very nice GUI to easily configure and administer, providing different presentations to the database administrator. The feature that can be included is the integration with third-party monitoring systems, that is, monitoring systems from other vendors, not only from Oracle."
"Oracle could be improved by the ability to manage it on the cloud. This on-premises version is secure and reliable, but I'm sure that they will soon provide a cloud solution that will be even better. In one to two years, we will probably move to the cloud—we have already moved to the cloud with Microsoft Exchange, but our databases are still on-premises. I would prefer managing a cloud version of Oracle."
"The usage of block storage devices in the cloud or migration of a type of storage from one site to another site can be improved. Currently, we have to use multi-node to single node because of the lack of storage support on the Azure side. It did not really work. Our DBA had to spend a lot of time tweaking the Data Guard tools, or the underlying Oracle VMs, to make sure that Data Guard would run on top of different types of storage. So, if it can support transporting or getting from one type of storage to another type of storage in a different site or a different technology, it would be very helpful."
"The predominant issue lies in the communication link between the secondary and primary databases."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is really expensive. Its price is not good for Latin America. Its price is good for the United States or Europe."
"Technical support is pretty good. It is doing fine, but you pay for it."
"Licensing can be either complicated or simple depending on what type of licensing you wish to use and what works best for your environment."
"Licensing IBM Spectrum Protect can be somewhat confusing for new users due to the options available, such as licensing on a capacity or per server basis."
"The pricing model of this solution is another difficult area, it's very sophisticated in the way they charge. It's based on PBU, which is a type of processor, how, many processors, and you need to put everything into an equation. However, they have different ways of charging or licensing. One way is a back-end volume or front-end volume, which is quite complicated."
"When compared to the cost of other enterprise products, it seems to be in the same range. However, compared to the cost of non-enterprise products, it is really high."
"Regarding retro-compatibility of the product between versions, your data is always available and the ROI is unquestionable."
"License-wise regarding IBM, it's licensed per terabyte. And that is after compression and deduplication."
"This is the best solution if you want something similar that's less expensive than Oracle Grid."
"It's a cost-effective solution."
"Oracle Data Guard is a feature available only in Oracle Database Enterprise Edition, and is available for extra cost."
"The cost of the Oracle license will depend on the negotiations with Oracle."
"The licensing cost is significantly high."
"The pricing is on the higher side."
"The cost is expensive."
"It is not a cheap product, but if you look at the price, features, availability, scalability, and maturity, it is a very good product."
