It has helped in supporting the development of an Enterprise Data Model
Data model development: This has built-in ways to create multiple, separate solution data models, including ways to link to an Enterprise Data Model (EDM). Other objects are encyclopedia-wide and need a different approach for managing solution-specific diagrams with an ability to query, e.g…

Created detailed rack and network diagrams that streamline documentation and collaboration
For creating diagrams, I definitely use Visio for HLD, LLD, and traffic flow diagrams. Apart from Visio, I use Jira only if the customer specifically requests it; otherwise, I do not use an in-house version of Jira in my organization. One of the good features of using the Microsoft umbrella product is that if I create a big diagram and then work on the HLD or LLD in Word, I can select everything from Visio and paste it as an image without needing to resize it, which streamlines the process of creating documentation for customers. The main benefits Visio provides me include simplifying processes, saving time on manual work with diagram creation, and delivering a clean architecture, whether it is network architecture or application flow. I have created diagrams for AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premises data centers, including rack elevation diagrams and organization charts. Modifications can be made easily and reflected immediately, and I can create PNG images to share with the executive team.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It has helped in supporting the development of an Enterprise Data Model."
"The most valuable feature of Visio is diagram creation. If you have a presentation, you can create your data model using Visio."
"Without this product, I would struggle to do my work."
"The most valuable aspect of Visio is enabling comprehensive coverage of architectural elements."
"The primary functionality revolves around the creation of flow diagrams and diverse Building Information Modeling (BIM) using contemporary and pre-established notations. In my perspective, these ready-made notations prove highly beneficial. Despite being a compact tool, it is effective for tasks such as drawing organizational charts, making it a straightforward and uncomplicated tool."
"Compared to other products we used in the past, modelling with Visio is faster and the final result in terms of appearance is more professional."
"The most valuable feature of this product is its versatility."
"It has improved the way my organization functions because diagramming is almost similar to mind-mapping, and it is a good way to get the message across for people to understand at all levels."
"The usability in general is good. The integration of uploading custom stencils is also very nice."

Cons

"The product is very outdated software; complex to use, and the GUI is a fat client so no mobile or web access."
"Searching for specific templates within the program can be difficult. For example, if I need a template for an electrical diagram with certain symbols, it can be challenging to find it."
"The price could be better."
"In terms of enterprise architecture, Visio is limited."
"Inventory feature could be improved."
"It's not easy to share and modify by colleagues."
"It can be complex. If you don't know a little bit about it, it can get really confusing."
"The user interface could be simplified and easier to use."
"In terms of features, it could provide more automation to display data flowing through architecture."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The product is inexpensive if you already have Microsoft products in your environment. The license encompasses all the required services."
"The price of Visio is reasonable."
"We have about 10 to 15 people with Visio licenses in my company, but I wasn't involved in the direct negotiation of the prices since this was taken care of by my administrative office."
"We probably have an M-365 E3 license."
"I haven't looked at the prices lately. We have an older copy, and it was a couple of hundred dollars for this software. That's a huge expense."
"Visio is expensive."
"While I don't recall the exact price I do recall that it was quite high."
"It's cheaper than other solutions."
