User finds setup straightforward but seeks wider platform support and advanced features
Microsoft DPM could implement backup capabilities for third-party systems such as Linux. They also need to consider other features such as replication to DR sites, similar to what Veeam and other products offer. Microsoft DPM didn't have that capability at that time. If they want to remain competitive in the market, they need to observe the competition and implement improvements. The backup should have compression, deduplication, and DR replication. They should also improve monitoring of the environment. Microsoft DPM didn't have these basics at that time. If they had continued development on the products, they could have reached a higher level, especially given Microsoft's significant presence and majority of servers. Microsoft DPM didn't have any support structure in the backend. If they had a support structure, we could have escalated issues. I never received any support from Microsoft DPM.

Ensures high availability, disaster recovery, and data protection for Oracle databases through features like real-time data synchronization, automatic failover and zero data loss
Oracle Data Guard stands out by providing heavy-duty features that enable connecting multiple standby databases to a single production database. Oracle supports up to eight standby databases, offering a level of redundancy and scalability that other platforms cannot match. Implementing Oracle Data Guard ensures the protection and integrity of your data, even in the event of a disaster. With Data Guard, Oracle guarantees zero data loss, providing peace of mind for organizations relying on their data for critical operations. Data Guard offers multiple protection modes, each serving different needs. One such mode is active-active, where both the production and standby databases are actively accessible. In the event of a failure, seamless switchover occurs without disrupting client sessions, as they remain unaware of the transition between databases.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Microsoft DPM is scalable."
"It has an application backup, a file backup, a system backup and a hypervisor."
"The most important feature is that it's easy to use."
"This solution helps us to manage all of the operations across servers and different workstations."
"One of the most effective features of Microsoft DPM is its integration with the entire Microsoft ecosystem."
"Microsoft DPM provides enhanced security and streamlines processes through automation, which results in better security for users."
"The user interface is very good. The reporting and monitoring features are also good."
"I could back up all the stuff we had, even the VMs we have for Hyper V."
"We use Data Guard for online replication from data center, to data center for high availability. This is the most important feature."
"The most valuable features are the backup and restore. With this in place along with the clustering, the database is safe from hacking, hardware failure, power failures, and system crashes."
"Technical support is very good. If at any time we write a ticket, we get the appropriate answer on time."
"The most valuable feature is the flashback standby, which allows us to test without scrapping the database."
"The most valuable feature is the application or promotional code used in the production protocol to transfer data to the secondary database, situated on the DR site."
"The solution is quite stable. We haven't experienced any bugs, glitches, or crashes. We find it to be quite reliable."
"One of the most valuable features is real-time replication. The version we're using is reliable and easy to deploy."
"Oracle Data Guard is a free solution. When you apply for Enterprise Manager, it comes for free with the solution."

Cons

"The user interface can be improved quite a bit."
"Additional Hyper-V knowledge would be great."
"We can't take a snapshot and take it outside, which is a problem."
"It needs portability for other vendors. It is good for backing up Microsoft servers, but it doesn't support third-party solutions such as Oracle Database. It depends on Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy, especially for Hyper-V, which has a lot of problems. They should enhance the Volume Shadow Copy functionality. Its reporting should also be better. Reporting is too weak in DPM."
"You have only a few settings and if you change them for some special configurations, it's very difficult."
"There is a very poor online user community in terms of people blogging about their experiences with DPM."
"Microsoft DPM didn't have any support structure in the backend. If they had a support structure, we could have escalated issues. I never received any support from Microsoft DPM."
"Setting up the solution can be complex."
"Overall, there are some operational issues that need to be dealt with."
"It is a rather complex solution, so it could be more user-friendly."
"The implementation is complex for anyone who's jumping into it without any experience. It's all command-line driven implementations. For some, that's a turn-off."
"It is a very useful administrative IT tool. It saves on costs."
"The initial setup is complex."
"They may need to include the monitoring and the alerting part in Data Guard."
"When the data replicates into the standby database there is a possibility of having a microsecond amount of data loss. The data loss occurs when there is a network disconnection between the primary and secondary standby database located in the data centers or if there is a crash in the primary database."
"For Italian medium-sized companies, the main challenge lies in the cost associated with licenses."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Microsoft DPM is a free solution. However, we pay approximately $3,000 annually for support."
"Microsoft DPM can be considered as an expensive solution for smaller or medium enterprises, but we have been satisfied with the price structure as it is fixed and it offers a variety of useful features"
"I think Microsoft DPM pricing is reasonable. The additional costs are related to storage and technical support."
"The cost is expensive."
"It is not a cheap product, but if you look at the price, features, availability, scalability, and maturity, it is a very good product."
"The licensing cost is significantly high."
"This is the best solution if you want something similar that's less expensive than Oracle Grid."
"If you want to have everything automated and done smoothly, you have to add additional licenses."
"The pricing is on the higher side."
"It's a cost-effective solution."
"The cost of the Oracle license will depend on the negotiations with Oracle."
