Automated data discovery has streamlined management while configuration remains complex
Compared to Big-ID, Microsoft Purview Data Governance looks complicated to me. I do not feel it has a good user-level UI. The interface feels a little complicated compared to Big-ID. I did not appreciate the configuration part. It felt complex, whereas when I went for a Big-ID demo, the interface looked better and was easier to understand for any user.

There are always tons of rooms for improvement for Vanta. I kind of exaggerated a little bit about the policy control. I don't really love the way they handle the revision management of that feature. If I'm on V1 of the policy document and I make some changes to it, then I get rid of V1 and then I re-upload V2. It's not that it keeps a running history of each of the different revisions. A little bit of an issue with that, but workable. I don't really have any negative complaint right now that would be worthwhile expressing. It's just that there's a lot of features. The UI is not super intuitive, but now that I've worked with it for a couple of years, I know how to navigate and get around. Initially, it was a little bit of a struggle understanding how these things would all work.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The user interface is highly intuitive and user-friendly."
"The time to onboard is pretty short."
"I don't know if I've gotten much value out of Purview personally, but our security team loves it. Our biggest concern is leakage or theft of our data because we have a lot of PII and stuff that has not been released. We like the insights Purview provides and the way the solution can track and manage things. I'd say that was probably their favorite piece of it so far. From everything the security team has told me, the policy management and DLP features are working spectacularly."
"The most valuable aspect of Purview is its PowerShell connectivity, enabling automation."
"It is designed to seamlessly connect to various data sources, which is particularly beneficial for our customers who primarily use Microsoft technologies."
"One of the best features is the classification rules, especially the scan rule sets. They are really useful, especially when we need to understand the current data the company has to ensure that all the problematic data can be put under someone's responsibility."
"Data authentication enables us to classify documents based on whether they should be restricted for internal consumption or permitted for external sharing."
"Microsoft Purview's primary benefit lies in safeguarding sensitive and confidential data, thereby mitigating the risk of internal data exfiltration."
"After implementing those changes with Vanta, we tracked specific outcomes and metrics and improved compliance scores, which we can see in Vanta."
"Vanta's integrations and automated tests have streamlined our SOC 2 compliance and provided a single entry point for addressing risks and failed tests."
"The product has provided automated security controls for our cloud provider. It helps to automate security checks. Vanta offers a list of things that can be done to achieve ISO 27001 compliance."
"Vanta has positively impacted my organization by streamlining the whole HITRUST R2 assessment process."
"The most valuable feature of Vanta is its prebuilt control frameworks."
"They integrate into New Relic as a performance monitoring tool."
"Task management and vendor assurance are the most valuable features. It is also an easy tool to use."
"Vanta provides a necessary repository that any compliance expert will look at and recognize right away."

Cons

"We haven't really gotten too far into it to identify areas for improvement just yet."
"It could reduce pricing to encourage usage."
"Reflecting organizational changes within Purview is impractical."
"Licensing is frustrating due to multiple modules and licenses. The feature might be available in the console, but it won't work without the proper license, creating confusion."
"There are some non-Microsoft file formats that are not supported."
"We have had some issues automating our document management with Power Apps. I haven't been super-disappointed with anything except for Power Apps, which kinda drives me nuts. I think it's because I am a coder who can do things properly, and I keep trying to do things there, but it's not working out the way. The security team is pretty quick. I'm kind of a thorn in their side. I always try to get around stuff. They haven't come to me for anything saying, "Hey, I can't find this information." They're pretty good. Maybe, there's a lack of documentation, but that doesn't seem to be an issue for our team."
"Privacy features should be integrated into the core product rather than offered as optional add-ons, as privacy is not a luxury but a fundamental requirement."
"Frequent daily updates from Microsoft can cause interface elements like buttons to appear and disappear, making navigation unpredictable."
"Failed tests for device CVEs seem to be cumulative, meaning I have to clear all CVEs before the test will pass, which makes it difficult to resolve the test before the next round of CVEs are published."
"There are connection problems about 50% of the time because of the automated evidence collection."
"Permissions for platform users have been an issue. We've had to give admin access to Vanta for another team member to view all items."
"Currently, Vanta's user access review module is still in development, and we've been giving them continuous feedback to help them improve that."
"They have an AI generator for the system description for SOC 2, however, the outline is a little sketchy."
"I would tell others looking into using Vanta to use it for HITRUST E1 and I1 assessments, as the R2 assessments are still a work in progress."
"There is a delay with customer support and they are unsure of the answers we need."
"Some of the tool's automated tests do not work the way it should."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Aside from the complexity of the pricing model, the price itself is realistic. Features like AI components and automatic classification require additional licenses. Still, anyone can start using Purview with a basic E3 license if they're using Microsoft 365 and grow with additional licenses as needed. Overall, we're satisfied with the price."
"We pay $15,000 per end user for the E5 license."
"Purview is included in our Microsoft E5 licensing."
"Microsoft Purview is priced in the middle. It isn't the cheapest, but it isn't the most expensive. It's affordable compared to other public cloud services."
"The categorization within the licensing could be improved. There are a lot of solutions within Microsoft Purview. If the licensing could be a bit clearer and the solutions could be better categorized according to function and across multiple environments, that would be excellent. The licensing is very confusing."
"It's not cheap. I'm not exactly sure how much our license costs, but it is very expensive."
"Microsoft Purview is the best option I have encountered when it comes to price. Maybe some of my information is outdated, but Microsoft offered it so that you could use it almost without paying."
"Microsoft Purview has a pay-per-use pricing model, so it's one of the most cost-effective tools, as your cost will be based on your usage. It's a pricing model that Microsoft has nailed down, making it great whether you're a small organization or a multinational, giant organization."
"Vanta is expensive."
