Easily scalable data catalog with good data profiling and data domain discovery features, but its ease of use and set up needs improvement
Pros and Cons
- "Multifeatured and easily scalable data catalog, with good data domain discovery and data profiling features."
- "This solution is hard to set up and its interface is not user-friendly. It's also not as stable, and the technical support takes a lot of time to solve simple problems."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
These are the features I found useful in Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog: one is its data profiling is good. The data lineage is also okay, though it had a few issues to be solved. The data domain discovery for the solution is good, though it was hard to implement.
What needs improvement?
Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog is hard to set up, so this is an area for improvement, e.g. it would be good if they make it easier to set up, because the project was made 80% of the time of the setup. Another area for improvement is its ease of use, because the interface is not as user-friendly.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog for the last three years, and the last time I used it was three days ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog is not as stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog is an easily scalable solution.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support for Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog is not so good, because it took a lot of time for them to solve simple problems.
How was the initial setup?
The set up for this solution was not easy.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to other people who want to implement Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog is that they need to be sure that it can deliver the expectations they have about the data catalog, because after our implementation, we weren't able to use it a lot.
I'm rating Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

There are little indications and graphics that show you how good the data quality is, and you can drill into it to see where potential issues lie.
Pros and Cons
- "Axon does one interesting thing that I don't think other tools do as well. It lets you rate data and incorporates Informatica's data quality feature into it. There are little indications and graphics that show you how good the data quality is, and you can drill into it to see where potential issues lie."
- "The cloud version of Axon is far behind the on-prem, and many of my clients want to go fully to the cloud. However, Axon has to be an on-prem installation. I would like to see their cloud products catch up with their on-prem capabilities."
What is our primary use case?
The organizations I work with often have trouble getting buy-in from business users and understanding how data governance relates to them or where the data lineage is. We use Axon in two key areas.
The first is automating data governance processes, policies, and roles in terms of data stewards, data owners, etc. Those process flow charts are typically stored in a PowerPoint, Excel, or board document. Everyone involved in data governance would have to send emails manually and such. Axon allows them to automate all that. So if there's a data owner that needs to update a definition, a request that needs to be flagged, or a data quality error, all that is embedded into the Axon system. That's one reason our clients go with it.
The use case is embedding the data or the business glossary into the day-to-day workflow. For example, we could integrate it with Tableau. When people are looking at a Tableau report, they understand exactly what the data lineage is and where this data is coming from. They'll also know exactly what those business glossary terms mean, so they can more accurately interpret and analyze the report.
What is most valuable?
Axon does one interesting thing that I don't think other tools do as well. It lets you rate data and incorporates Informatica's data quality feature into it. There are little indications and graphics that show you how good the data quality is, and you can drill into it to see where potential issues lie.
Users can comment on the data, tag people, and ask questions or rate the data one to five based on their experience, which helps eliminate data silos. You have all your information right there, and it's easier for future users to know which data to draw from.
What needs improvement?
The cloud version of Axon is far behind the on-prem, and many of my clients want to go fully to the cloud. However, Axon has to be an on-prem installation. I would like to see their cloud products catch up with their on-prem capabilities.
I would like to see Informatica add more automation and AI. Some of that is already there, but it would be helpful to have some automation to speed up the process of manually tagging and moving components of your IT setup into your business glossary and the front end.
For how long have I used the solution?
We started our first Axon implementation at one of our clients in the fall of 2021. Two of my other clients are about to purchase the technology and start using it.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Axon is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Axon is scalable.
How are customer service and support?
Informatica support has been good. These data governance and metadata products are some of the newer products on the market technology-wise, so I've been impressed with their responsiveness and the tool's maturity.
How was the initial setup?
Installing Axon is straightforward. If the cloud version were more robust it would be easier, but it's just fine for the on-prem solution. Two people should be enough to deploy and support it.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Informatica Axon nine out of 10. If you're planning to implement Axon, I recommend having an identified data governance lead. I think the most difficult part of implementing this is getting your people and processes aligned, so you know what you're putting into the system. Having a clear data governance manager is the most helpful data governance practice for an organization.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud

Enterprise Architect at a manufacturing company with 10,001+ employees
Helps in visualizing what we're trying to accomplish and has excellent stability and support
Pros and Cons
- "In the latest version, I like the outlay of the business roles creation. I like seeing that visualization as you're building it, as opposed to going through metatables or XML mappings. We liked that piece, and it makes it more intuitive for the business."
- "The biggest pain point for us is the documentation. Typically, you have to go through knowledge forums and knowledge groups to find out about the syntax issues for interfacing with new products. Typically, you've got to deal with someone who has been through the pain before. Their documents are not really up to date with current innovations happening in the industry. As big as they are, you can't really expect it, but that's our pain point."
What is our primary use case?
It is generally used for the data integration between multiple ERPs. We have ERPs, and then we have third-party exchanges that sell products. The third parties are partnered up with some of the customers, so they create deeds, and we pull in orders and quote requests.
We're trying to get to the latest version. We're two revisions behind right now. It is a local install.
It is on-prem, and we're trying to get to all-cloud. We do use the cloud for configuration, but we deploy it to the agents locally. We're using the cloud instance of Informatica to deploy to, and we're currently on Azure.
What is most valuable?
In the latest version, I like the outlay of the business roles creation. I like seeing that visualization as you're building it, as opposed to going through metatables or XML mappings. We liked that piece, and it makes it more intuitive for the business.
Its GUI interface definitely helps visualize what we're trying to accomplish. There is always a disconnect between IT and the business, and it helps in creating the feeds that follow the business process flows with some of the types involved with the business.
It is so broad in what it can do. Their services have expanded beyond what they originally built it out to be. The best thing I like about it is that each time they add a new service to the platform, it easily integrates with the core, which is really nice.
What needs improvement?
The biggest pain point for us is the documentation. Typically, you have to go through knowledge forums and knowledge groups to find out about the syntax issues for interfacing with new products. Typically, you've got to deal with someone who has been through the pain before. Their documents are not really up to date with current innovations happening in the industry. As big as they are, you can't really expect it, but that's our pain point.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've been using this solution for about four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We love it. It is very stable. It is probably the best thing we've seen in a while.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It can out scale our ERP. So, scalability is not an issue for us. However, it can overload our system, but that is not related to the scalability of MDM. It is related to the scalability of the system it feeds.
We have five business roles that are using it, and there are two admins who are supporting it. Basically, it is supporting an environment of about 5 billion in revenue. That's a lot for that amount of revenue. It is a lot of people.
We're trying to extend or expand more modules. We have MDM, and we're going into Supplier 360 and Product 360. We found that it is the most robust platform to integrate with our e-commerce platform. Basically, we have four different e-commerce realms, and we're going to consolidate them. So, Informatica helps with the supplier stuff coming in, harmonizing the data, propagating it out to the sites. In the future, the four sites are going to be combined and consolidated into one site, and then we'll be dealing with four different ERPs, and Informatica will be very key in that as well.
How are customer service and technical support?
Their technical support is excellent. Whenever we had issues, they were pretty quick to respond. There was never an issue in finding them. The longest we had to wait for getting a resolution was a couple of hours.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I walked into this, so I don't know what they had before.
How was the initial setup?
I wasn't involved with its setup.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It is expensive. That's probably the biggest drawback. The business has heartache paying the license, but that's mainly because they don't realize what value it brings. The key thing about the MDM solution is that it is in the backend, and no one sees what it is actually doing. You don't know it is a problem until it is not there.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise making sure that you have a very well-defined design before you decide you need an MDM. In our case, after MDM was in place and we turned it on, we realized that there are other processes that we needed to refactor for the purpose of MDM, which extended the rollout. This was not an MDM issue. It was a process issue in the business. That's why you need to make sure that the design is well defined. It helps to have their partners involved as well. We're dealing with Informatica consulting today to help design a Supplier 360 portal.
It is hard to find people who are well versed in Informatica. It is hard to pluck one out of the place. You've got to go and poach for them. They're not out there open and looking for jobs.
I would rate Informatica MDM an eight out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Enterprise Data Architect at a pharma/biotech company with 11-50 employees
Offers satisfying stability and tech support with data architecture features
Pros and Cons
- "It's a stable product without any bugs or glitches."
- "The product isn't mature enough to provide suitable connectors to various data engines."
What is our primary use case?
At our company, we use Informatica MDM for data architecture and numerous other aspects of data warehouse, such as data designing or modeling. We recommend Informatica products to our customers based on their use cases, data volume, budget, and environment suitability.
What needs improvement?
The product isn't mature enough to provide suitable connectors to various data engines. The performance of the solution in transporting data between data lakes and Big data infrastructure is not up to the mark. At our company, we use a similar solution called Spark, which is much better than Informatica MDM in terms of performance and speed. The data support capabilities of Informatica MDM can be improved.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's a stable product without any bugs or glitches. But overall Kafka is a better product than Informatica MDM.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The product exhibits satisfying scalability.
How are customer service and support?
The tech support is satisfying from the vendor. The support team was able to respond and solve the issues in a very short time. I would rate the tech support an eight out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
Informatica MDM easily integrates with the Informatica environment as well as with third-party tools. But for some integrations, for instance, when Informatica MDM is integrated with SAP, the functionality slows down drastically; the task that would take five minutes with Spark takes five hours with Informatica MDM.
The same scenario occurs when Kafka is integrated with Informatica MDM. For popular database integrations such as Oracle and SQL, Informatica MDM functions well enough.
The initial setup of the solution is straightforward. Our company professionals suggest that Informatica MDM should be on a Linux server instead of Windows.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The product is very expensive compared to other competitor tools. Informatica MDM is not meant for small businesses but rather used by large enterprises like banks or government organizations. Informatica MDM can be purchased as a stand-alone product and doesn't come in an Informatica bundle. The support for Informatica MDM is not included in the standard licensing fees and must be purchased separately.
What other advice do I have?
I recommend that others test Informatica MDM with different integration tools before making a purchase decision. I also advise others to evaluate the use cases before choosing a product. Other popular competitor tools in the market include Collibra and SAP MDG.
Informatica MDM fits our organization's use cases perfectly. When a customer of our company has a plethora of business products, VOCs need to be implemented, even if it's a different MDM solution than Informatica MDM.
Some customers depend on a single technology ERP, while others work with Oracle ERP or SAP, and sometimes they are using ERP and Informatica MDM in combination or migrating from one ERP to another. These use cases will impact the setup that already exists on the customer's site, and thus, the solution needs to be configured accordingly. I would rate Informatica MDM as eight out of ten.

Data Analyst at a university with 1,001-5,000 employees
Provides efficient business insights and valuable data management architecture
Pros and Cons
- "The technical support services are good."
- "They could provide more robust performance for data integration processes. It would help in improving the data quality more efficiently."
What is our primary use case?
We use the tool to collect, integrate, and process the data from different sources. Later, we direct the processed data to the required solution for analysis purposes.
What is most valuable?
It is a cloud service integration platform providing flexible and scalable data management architecture. It enables seamless integration with large data ecosystems, including Hadoop and NoSQL databases. It supports real-time data streaming platforms as well.
What needs improvement?
They could provide more robust performance for data integration processes. It would help in improving the data quality more efficiently.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using Informatica Data Integration Hub for the past six months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate the platform’s stability a seven out of ten. The complexity depends on the types of data. It has a robust software architecture.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The product offers two types of scaling mechanisms. We can add more nodes, integrate the service grid, and distribute workloads across multiple processing units. Also, we can add more resources, including CPU memory. It enhances the capability to handle large data volumes.
We can even utilize the load-balancing feature while handling high volumes of data. I rate the scalability an eight out of ten for efficient adaptability, pricing, and performance.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support services are good.
How was the initial setup?
The complexity of the initial setup depends on several factors, including types and volumes of data. It also depends on the data integration and configuration.
What other advice do I have?
Working with a healthcare client with diverse locations, we faced the challenge of analyzing data in isolation, making it difficult to generalize findings across different areas. With the help of Informatica Data Integration Hub, we can collect data from various locations and enhance business insights.
We are familiar with centralized publishing and subscription models. It ensures the enforcement of data governance policies across all data sources and consumers, promoting data consistency and quality.
The automated artificial data synchronization facilitated by the data integration hub has proven invaluable in supporting our daily operations. It ensures the continuous updating of data, preventing delays and inaccuracies that may arise from using outdated information in analyses. This capability became particularly crucial during the sudden changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing us to adapt swiftly to the evolving business landscape. However, they could provide us with real-time data to increase the efficiency of manufacturing processes.
I advise others to understand the different data resources available in the organization before making the purchase decision. I rate it an eight out of ten.

Principal Consultant at a tech consulting company with 201-500 employees
A stable and powerful tool that provides good support and excellent out-of-the-box features
Pros and Cons
- "It is easy to create REST-based interfaces of the master data objects."
- "The tool should provide a unified user interface to manage the data objects."
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution for party data management. The tool ensures that the information is the same in every business system so that all the systems have the same view of what parties are involved in an agreement.
What is most valuable?
It is easy to create REST-based interfaces of the master data objects. It can be used for reading, creating, and modifying the master data objects of the parties, their addresses, and contact information. The creation and modification features always consider the data quality rules, and it is a very powerful way to provide a data interface to master data objects. It is missing in many other tools.
The solution meets the performance needs of my organization. There isn't much that Informatica doesn't do. The maintenance of the data quality rules has been improved. It’s a lot better than it was when we started. Replacing the old SOAP APIs with the new REST APIs is a great improvement. It’s still a work in progress. Some interfaces still use the old SOAP APIs.
What needs improvement?
The management of different properties is sometimes divided between different user interfaces. The tool should provide a unified user interface to manage the data objects.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with the tool for ten years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The tool can scale according to our needs.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was not difficult. We had very good support from Informatica’s professional services.
What about the implementation team?
The team was a mix of in-house, vendor and other consultants.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The product has a high price point. However, it does not lack features. TIBCO EBX and Profisee are much cheaper. However, they lack features that Informatica MDM provides out of the box. Though the list price of Informatica MDM is high, it is negotiable.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
What other advice do I have?
I do not have experience with the new workflow engine. It is much more extensible because it is a full business process engine. Overall, I rate the product a nine out of ten.
