Offers ability to configure multiple switches in one step which is an incredible feature
Pros and Cons
  • "This is a sophisticated product with easy configuration that can save time and effort."
  • "The pricing needs to be more competitive with other products on the market."

What is our primary use case?

We've chosen the Meraki product because the configuration is very simple. They are Cisco products, so we are sure of their reputation, the quality, the brand, the performance, and the support.

What is most valuable?

What we like best is that the product makes configuration easy. We can configure a whole bunch of switches or ports at the same time. For example, if we select 200 ports and change some parameters, these options will be applied two minutes later on every branch anywhere in the world where we have selected the switches. This ability to configure multiple switches in one step is an incredible feature.

What needs improvement?

One simple way to improve the product is to reconsider the price. They are more expensive than their competitors. You have to take into account that it is Meraki by Cisco and they know they are the best and that if you need a less expensive solution you can buy other products. If you want the best, you have to pay for it. But certainly they are a bit more expensive than the competitors.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for one-and-a-half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For us, this product has been very stable. We have had zero problems concerning stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is currently serving about 270 users within our company. I think the product is very scalable and it would not matter how many users we add.

How are customer service and support?

I have been in touch with technical support. The support is of course in English because they are an English speaking company, but the support was all very clear to me. The resolution of our issue was easy and it took maybe about 30 minutes for issues I called about. With any problems or questions that we had, they were there to help and we had a fast resolution every time. So personally I am very happy with the support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before we switched to Cisco Meraki, we were using Hewlett Packard Enterprise Switches. They are not cloud-managed and it's not a software-defined network solution. I don't know if we can compare these one-to-one. But we did make the change because we thought it was a better fit for our network model and the solution was a better fit for our ultimate goals.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very easy. We deployed eight switches with about 350 ports. Configuration of that took about two days.

What about the implementation team?

We did not need help from the vendor or an installation team. I did it by myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I know that Cisco is a bit more expensive than its competitors. I know that we bought a license for a three-year term and that you can get discounts based on the length of the term. However, I do not know the exact amount that we pay.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Actually, we did not consider other solutions when we decided to make the switch. I had read many things about Cisco Meraki and a lot of my colleges are using this solution. I went to visit some places that were using the solution and they showed me what it could do. I was satisfied with what my colleagues showed me about the solution when I was at their businesses and we bought the solution based on that impression.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to other people who are looking into this solution is that if they need a fast, scalable and easy-to-manage solution, they can buy a Cisco Meraki product. They pay the price for the quality of the product and the ease of use. It is not the cheapest, but it is the best. Maybe the time you save in configuration and use over other products is worth the extra cost.

On a scale from one to ten where one is the worst and ten is the best, I would rate Meraki Cisco as a nine. It is not a ten because of the price and if you give ten of ten points there is no room for improvement. Everything can improve, even the best.

Reliable, easy to expand, and is straightforward to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "We found the initial setup to be easy."
  • "We have dealt with a few minor bugs."

What is our primary use case?

Mainly, we do some configurations and allow for ports to be opened on the firewall.

What is most valuable?

For the most part, the solution has been stable.

The solution can scale fairly well.

The cloud-based deployment is very straightforward.

What needs improvement?

We have dealt with a few minor bugs.

We would like the solution to lower its costs.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is largely stable and reliable. That said, we have faced some very minor bugs here and there. It hasn't been a big deal in general.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good. It's likely as scalable as Aruba, for example. If a company needs to expand it, it can do so.

We have 150 people using the solution currently.

How are customer service and support?

We've never contacted technical support. I cannot speak to how helpful or responsive they are.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also work with Aruba.

I've also worked with FortiSwitch in the past, at a different job.

How was the initial setup?

We have found the initial setup to be easy. If it is cloud-based, it's a really easy installation. There is no need for a reprogram mission or something like that or to even worry about having to do some coding.

I cannot recall how long the deployment took. However, it does depend on the internet connection. As a cloud-based solution, you need to download all the configurations from the headquarters.

You only need one manager and two technicians to handle the deployment and maintenance tasks.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Users do have to pay to license the solution.

The pricing could be lowered a bit.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend the solution, however, it depends on the project.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

User friendly dashboard, simple configuration, and effective site blocking
Pros and Cons
  • "Meraki MS Switches have a very user-friendly dashboard and the policies are straightforward for sending them to the devices and blocking sites."
  • "The traffic reporting should be better in Meraki MS Switches. We want to be able to see all the traffic and where it is going. Additionally, detailed device utilization information would be very helpful for the security personnel."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Meraki MS Switches as a network device in our organization.

What is most valuable?

Meraki MS Switches have a very user-friendly dashboard and the policies are straightforward for sending them to the devices and blocking sites.

What needs improvement?

The traffic reporting should be better in Meraki MS Switches. We want to be able to see all the traffic and where it is going. Additionally, detailed device utilization information would be very helpful for the security personnel.

The solution VPN is based on Windows features. They have to come up with their own solution because of what is happening, sometimes it is connecting and sometimes not. If they had their own tool, these types of issues can be mitigated.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Meraki MS Switches for approximately six months.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Meraki MS Switches an eight out of ten.

Easy to configure and manage with one easy-access dashboard
Pros and Cons
  • "They're easy to update."
  • "Technical support hold times seem to be getting longer."

What is our primary use case?

We typically use the solution at the client site.

What is most valuable?

All switching technologies are pretty much the same. The best thing I could say is that I like how I can see everything on one dashboard along with the access point in MX. I prefer how you see everything in the dashboard easily, with no command-line interface. It makes it easy to check in to Meraki and easy to configure.

They're easy to update. Everything seems to be stable with Meraki switches the last couple of years.

We support clients and we do a lot of stuff remotely, and we can easily see everything remotely. You don't need to be a network engineer to support Meraki.

The setup is easy. It's pretty plug-and-play.

What needs improvement?

A while back, there were some update problems.

Pricing is higher than other options.

Technical support hold times seem to be getting longer.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with the solution for about four or five years or so. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is very good. Currently, there are no bugs or glitches and it doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable and the performance is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable, however, it depends on which model you buy. We usually buy one that's stackable, in case we need to add more. We can easily stack them when we need to expand.

How are customer service and technical support?

You don't need to be a network engineer to support Meraki. We often support our clients and can do it remotely, which is helpful.

Technical support directly from Meraki is very friendly and they are knowledgeable folks. As of late, however, since maybe the last year or so ago, the hold time seems a bit longer. That said, the support personnel, the knowledge, it's all top-notch to me. It's just the time being on hold, it's getting longer and longer.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not difficult or complex. We find it to be very, very easy. A company shouldn't have any issues with the initial setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

While the pricing is a bit high and a bit of a drawback, its ease of use makes the price almost worth it.

What other advice do I have?

I'm a consultant.

If you don't have a dedicated network engineer, I would highly recommend Meraki.

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten. The switch is great. The price, however, is a bit high.

Great that you can configure all devices via the same access and just change the menus
Pros and Cons
  • "You can access a single pane of glass and configure all the devices via the same access."
  • "Doesn't enable a local configuration without internet access."

What is our primary use case?

I am a customer of Meraki.

What is most valuable?

A good feature of Meraki is that you can access a single pane of glass and you can configure all the devices via the same access and just change the menus.

What needs improvement?

This product doesn't enable a local configuration without internet access. If you compare this product to Fortinet the granularity of blocks that you can do related to the firewall and reports that you can deliver and control about blocking all access on Fortinet is more than Meraki. And when you talk about number of WANs that you can put on the device, Meraki can have only two WANs and when you have Fortinet you can have at least six sources of WAN.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution a 10 out of 10.
