We already had an ETL solution in place, so Tableau complemented it well for our use cases.

What is most valuable?

There are many features which I can speak about, but its overall ease with which you can analyze your data within a couple of clicks is an outstanding feature. Also, the stunning visualization with lots of statistical options, makes it a valuable product.

How has it helped my organization?

When we started with Tableau, it was basically used for converting existing Excel reports. But later on, after exploring the features and with latest releases, it had a greater impact on the way we interact with the data. We were able to connect the data from different source of data together. We were able to relate the defects, quality and cost aspects of the products of our company from different regions in a much more efficient way. The visualizations gave a better picture of the current state of affairs and we got an idea of what needs to be improved in the line of business. Now, Tableau has become an integral part of our organization for any analytical solution.

What needs improvement?

Tableau comes out with one major release every year and minor releases frequently, which is very good. Also, most of the changes are done based on the ideas posted on the community, which means it listens to the user base to come up with the changes, which is phenomenal.

As far as the changes I would like to see, they could improve performance with respect to big data connections and cube data sources. Many users in my organization feel that Tableau is great with RDBMS, but with Hadoop or cube data sources, the performance is not so great.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Tableau for nearly four years for the majority of my reporting and analytical solutions.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We did not face any issues with deployment, stability or scalability. The deployment was simple and we have not faced any issues until now.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate customer service and technical support as 9/10, excellent. The turnaround time for any issue is very good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. The only thing you have to check is for hardware compatibility. The rest is very simple, with just a click of a button.

What about the implementation team?

As implementation is simple, we preferred an in-house team. But you will get assistance from a vendor team if required.

What was our ROI?

ROI depends on how effectively you utilize the tool and explore the data.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing of the tool would be expensive for any small organization. I would suggest sitting with the vendor's relationship manager to discuss your strategy and the pricing model you’re looking for.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We explored other tools such as QlikView and Pentaho, but Tableau stood out in terms of its ease of use, great visualizations and simplicity. We already had an ETL solution in place, so Tableau complemented it well for our use cases.

What other advice do I have?

Tableau is more than a reporting tool; it has the analytical capabilities which need to be explored efficiently to get the best out of the tool. If you just want to replicate an Excel report, it would not help much in terms of ROI.

Tableau is a very good analytical reporting solution. It is improving its features with every release.

One of its greatest strengths is that it can very quickly perform various analyses, tests and rules out different scenarios.

Valuable Features

One of its greatest strengths is that it can very quickly perform various analyses, tests and rules out different scenarios, in seconds. It works perfectly integrating different data sources and applying immediate updates.

Ease of use: It requires a brief introduction and then you can use your imagination to perform all the analyses you want.

Other valuable features are: the ability to graphically represent different ideas, integration with different data sources and the ability to perform the deployment throughout the organization. To perform analysis is important but being able to share empowers the organization.

Improvements to My Organization

Tableau has allowed automated analysis and delivery. We have managed to automate reports that previously took up to 10 days to produce. Now, we can deliver these reports in a day (including updating databases).

Room for Improvement

They can improve the integration of SAP BW (join between elements) and Tableau Server platform, better adaptation for tablets and cellphone by the application and organize displays more efficiently.

Use of Solution

We have used Tableau for almost a year and a half.

Deployment Issues

The connection between Tableau Server and SAP BW can sometimes be unstable and lose the connection, at which point it does not display the query or the hub to which it was connected.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Tableau technical support is one of the best I've had. 9!

Initial Setup

Installation is really quick and easy; you just download the version directly from the official website of Tableau. The server configuration was a bit more complex but we had the support of the local provider.

Implementation Team

You should always analyze the variables; each organization is unique. However, for implementation, we ran the methodology suggested by Tableau Drive, which is based on others’ experiences.

It has allowed us to replace reports. The impacted report areas have been empowered by the tool, and are more aware of the data they report.

Other Solutions Considered

We evaluated Qlik Sense, SAP Lumira and Tableau. We decided on Tableau over Qlik and Lumira for ease of use by the functional teams, and because they have a direct supplier in Venezuela, including support and training. At the time of evaluation in May 2015, SAP Lumira’s analysis development capabilities and its integration with different data sources were not as good as Tableau’s. Even when connecting SAP Lumira with SAP BW, we could not publish analyses.

Other Advice

It is important to consider change management, definition of roles and performance analysts.
Tableau is a powerful tool for performing analyses and communicating them. We managed to empower the organization with Tableau and we are in the process of extending it to all the analytical community of our company.
We can integrate with SAP BW and perform analysis of information. However, we have found it difficult to join elements of BW such as cubes or queries, but this promises to be resolved in the new version, Tableau 10.
We are really pleased to have chosen Tableau as our ETL tool to support our analysis and sharing it within the organization.

It is a very powerful tool, but there is not enough control over the order in which filters and sorts are applied.

What is most valuable?

  • It is very powerful
  • Flexibility

What needs improvement?

Minor issues only. My biggest one is control over the order in which filters and sorts are applied. There is some control of this but not enough.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used it for seven months.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues encountered.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues encountered.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues encountered.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

It's very good.

Technical Support:

Our parent company has its own internal Tableau support team so I have had no contact with Tableau’s own technical support

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No previous solution was used in this company, but I do have experience of Domo.

How was the initial setup?

It was complex. We have a complex situation with extensive data security set up at three and a half levels across over 100 active users with most of the users not only controlled by level but also having access to very specific sets of data only.

Inevitably the setup for this in Tableau was complex. This is not a criticism of Tableau however – just the opposite, the impressive thing is that it had the flexibility to achieve it at all

What about the implementation team?

I implemented it myself.

What other advice do I have?

Tableau is a very powerful and flexible product, it also demands some level of skill on the part of the user. When compared with Domo for example, the end result in its standard form is more flexible, is able to put more information in a single view, and offers more user interactivity. However the other side of this coin is that in its standard form, it is much less accessible to less skilled users. We have managed to develop an interface that is as accessible as Domo, but this has been quite a complex and time-consuming task.

I just used Tableau Public for the first time on a community project. I don't know anything about Domo. How are the features compared to Tableau? How about cost? My main problem with using Tableau for consulting is the step price per user to view the online reports. I don't fully understand the difference between Tableau Online and Tableau Reader. Thank you.

Fast, quick, powerful rich data visualisations that can be shared across our institute. Best software I've ever used.

What is most valuable?

The ability to quickly connect to all of our datasources, whether its a Oracle or MySQL database, and excel sheet of a csv file and produce a rich interactive visualisation that can then be shared amongst everyone on site is fantastic. The ease of the interface makes it a joy to use.

How has it helped my organization?

Previously all reporting was very static. Each report would answer one specific question and if someone needed more information they would typically have to ask for another report to be made. Tableau allows us to create interactive reports with filtering, parameters and drill downs allowing the viewers to investigate their own data and find their own answers without having to go through a reporting team.

What needs improvement?

It would like to see autosaving, embedded fonts and other options to improve the ease of dashboard layout.

For how long have I used the solution?

I first started using Tableau in June 2011

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

None, the install seemed very straight forward and we successfully rolled out Tableau Server to all the users on site.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service: Superb on the very few occasions I have had to make use of it. I have had a timely response and my issues have been fixed.Technical Support: Again, I haven't had the need to use this very often but when I did it was excellent. The support forums and technical documentation is second to none.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used a combination of custom webpages written in perl and the Jaspersoft reporting webapp.

How was the initial setup?

After getting the requirements for Tableau server the actual set-up and deployment seemed to go very smoothly.

What about the implementation team?

We used The Information Lab to assist with some of the initial set-up. They were excellent and would recommend them to anyone.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Unknown as I am a power user and not a site admin nor involved in anything to do with license costs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We were introduced to Tableau by a collaborator and went on their recommendation as they had already looked at other vendors.

What other advice do I have?

Download the free demo, connect to some data and play with it. See for yourself how easy and quick it is to produce something that previously took you days to to. Look on public.tableausoftware.com to see what other people have made it with.

Useful for dashboards and has a great visualization component
Pros and Cons
  • "I like the visualization component."
  • "The development part should be better. We are putting a lot of effort in during development, so if we face any struggles, we have to find workaround solutions on the internet."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for the dashboard and visualization. We are a consultant company with 20 employees.

The solution is deployed on-prem. I am using the latest version.

What is most valuable?

I like the visualization component.

What needs improvement?

The development part should be better. We are putting a lot of effort in during development, so if we face any struggles, we have to find workaround solutions on the internet. It would be nice to have new workaround solutions and other options. Every customer has different expectations, so sometimes it's hard to find the right solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Tableau for 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is straightforward. It took about a week to install. For deployment and maintenance, we used two team leads.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This license is on a yearly basis.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution 9 out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

We are able to create reports that are more helpful to our front-line employees

What is our primary use case?

I use this program to visualize the data sets from front-line employees. Primarily, the tool is used for visualizing data.

How has it helped my organization?

We are able to create reports that are more helpful to our front-line employees. They are able to implement decisions much faster.

What is most valuable?

The friendliness and easy way of using the platform. I think that as a new user it is easy to learn, and really easy and quick to try and learn from mistakes.

What needs improvement?

Their training. I've been looking for ways in which we can start training more people to it, and it has shown that other platforms have more access to training than Tableau.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than one year.

Provides Many Alternatives For Presenting And Understanding A Business

What is most valuable?

Fluent expressions are beautiful. It provides many alternatives to present and understand business.

How has it helped my organization?

I have been in many project manager roles in BI system development, and I have experience with most BI tools during the last 20 years. In most cases, I had to use web development to cover areas the BI tools couldn't handle. But Tableau can solve most of my customers' requests with fluent alternatives.

What needs improvement?

All area where business insight is needed. Also, I would like to see improvement in server capacities.

For how long have I used the solution?

Two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Excellent. When I or my customers had questions, Tableau customer support addressed the issues quickly, and in the local Korean language.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with other BI solutions, but all of them had many limitations with respect to all my customers' requests. But Tableau is able to handle them.

How was the initial setup?

Very simple and easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Tableau is very good as a starting point for a BI system and environment with relatively low cost. But it's not easy to expand to enterprise level because there is no discount pricing strategy.

Some customers choose Tableau for small systems, but they choose other solutions for enterprise requirements, to reduce costs, even though they know Tableau is a better product.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No.

What other advice do I have?

It's very easy and an excellent solution. Even though this solution is, in my opinion, the best BI solution in the world, they are continuously developing their product, improving with every upgrade (and even with the minor upgrades).
