Dell EqualLogic PS series is easily scalable, and we can add extra boxes and storage. It was easy to deploy during COVID. Deploying Dell EqualLogic PS series is straightforward, with no complexity involved. Dell EqualLogic PS series is a good product. We did not experience any failures in the last six to seven years, and it is still running as our storage for offline data. There are snapshot capabilities in data protection available, but we did not use that feature because it consumes much space. We have only 150 terabytes of space and simply use it to create volumes without utilizing it for snapshots. We use thin provisioning in Dell EqualLogic PS series, but I did not explore that feature further.

The replication technology that Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform uses is quite older, and the replication methodology they employ for data between the data center and the production and standby database shows no significant improvement in that particular field. With respect to storage administration, I'd like to see more clarity on the encryption side; data being stored in an encrypted manner is essential, but the customer or end-user doesn't understand which encryption is being used and doesn't have a direct view stating that their data is encrypted using AES 256 or DES, or whatever standard they follow. This lack of transparency may not be acceptable during audits.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Technical support, when we had access to it, was very good."
"It is a stable solution. Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"Equallogic PS series arrays are the best suited storage platform for mid to high level enterprises."
"The solution offers very good read capacities, the size of the box we have is pretty decent, the speed on offer is very good, we have found the initial setup to be fairly straightforward, and Dell's technical support is very good."
"The support was excellent."
"The most valuable feature of Dell EqualLogic PS series auto tiering by using this feature, the customer can get higher performance on a valuable budget."
"Dell EqualLogic PS series is a highly stable solution."
"The scalability of the Dell EqualLogic PS series is very good, we had no issues."
"The first thing that attracted this model to us was the non-disruptive migration."
"The Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform F Series is a very steady solution; it's a state of the art solution in storage systems, and high-availability and performance are the strongest aspects of these machines."
"It is very flexible, and it is very useful when you want to virtualize different storage from different vendors."
"Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform 5000 Series exhibits good performance and has good IOPS: 300 IOPS. The technical support for this product is also good."
"The biggest benefit of the Hitachi platform is 100 percent storage uptime. It's also highly cost-effective."
"The feature I like best is the stability of the hardware."
"The performance is very good."
"The most valuable feature is that it has 'eight nines' availability, 99.999999 percent of the time. That is the main selling point."

Cons

"When they deployed our cluster, they did not provide any documentation or low-level or high-level diagrams. They simply came, mounted the servers, and started installation without documentation, which is a negative point on the vendor side."
"The solution does not scale well at all. It's a box, so we only have so much space to work with."
"6510 and 6610 have two iSCSI connections in each controller. Why do 6110xxx members have only one, and why do the same members have the possibility of having an active iSCSI interface in the passive controller? It could make a lot of noise with a failover."
"Three of the four devices have been rock solid, and one of them had a string of issues that we eventually resolved."
"If I need to have more space or more capacity, I need to replace the product. It would be ideal if we could scale without replacing the box itself."
"It's kind of expensive when you buy the EqualLogic solution because, as you grow, you have to keep buying another controller. It can be more expensive with time."
"EqualLogic is really not going to be relevant in the marketplace too much longer."
"There is no option for mixing RAID types in one device."
"The snapshot and clone operation functions can be made easier."
"Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform needs to improve its scalability options where there are a few shortcomings."
"Hitachi should work on unified storage for the SMB market and entry-level NAS storage, similar to what HP or Dell offers."
"I would like to see an audit account set up such that the user can log in, see the configuration, and see the logs, but they cannot make any changes."
"One thing that can be improved is the price because it is a bit expensive."
"The time taken to act upon issues is quite large, and issue identification takes a significant amount of time, especially when it comes to critical problems."
"Scalability is a little bit of an issue. The horizontal scalability is not there—only the vertical scalability is there."
"The embedded management for installation feature has neither simplified nor complicated the management process, therefore, there is room for improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Price-wise, the solution is cheap. I rate it a three on a scale of one to ten, where one is very cheap, and ten is very expensive."
"Licensing is pretty straightforward."
"I don't think I would say that the product is less expensive...The product's price is not an issue for our company, considering the relationship we have with Dell and the customer support we receive."
"There are annual maintenance costs beyond the original licensing period."
"Initial packages include all upgrades and services."
"All features are out of the box. The license will be in the virtual, OS, or application layer."
"It seemed expensive at first, but the durability lowered the cost of ownership dramatically over time."
"It is a fair price."
"Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G Series tools are highly specialized, such as management and performance tools and the overall solution is expensive. If customers want to have a lot of data in their hands, they need to purchase several solutions."
"The pricing we get is very competitive when compared to other vendors. Hitachi is working on their licensing model and it is improving but can be irksome when many different items are not bundled or enterprise size."
"I would like to see better pricing and more discounts."
"It is an expensive product. I rate its pricing a three out of ten."
"The solution is expensive."
"Our main issue with the Hitachi G-Series is what we consider to be an archaic software licensing scheme and high maintenance costs."
"The price is good enough considering the performance, and we are satisfied."
"A drawback of Hitachi storage systems is that they are expensive. The upfront cost is very high compared to others. But when you compare the IOPS at the same price, Hitachi gives you better business value..."
