Has improved performance for mission-critical workloads and enabled seamless non-disruptive upgrades
The availability is 99.99%, which is the main factor any customer would need because their data should be available whenever they want to access it. This is one main critical thing. It is very easy to upgrade since Pure Storage FlashArray handles it well. Everything is non-disruptive now; previously, there were forklift shifts, but now that is not the case. Pure Storage FlashArray says no to forklift upgrades. Usually hardware requires downtime, but Pure Storage FlashArray has improved their footprint so that they are not asking for downtime; everything is just a non-disruptive activity, which is why customers are more inclined towards Pure Storage FlashArray. Customers want more of the models in their environment due to the performance they are giving, and everything is in one Pure1 Array console where we can view all the models on one page or just an orchestration tool. You don't miss anything; you have replication, notifications about replication, and details about which host groups replication is happening in and if that replication is successful or failed. On a daily basis, our purpose is to create volumes for infrastructure; our daily activities include creating volumes and mapping them to the host, doing any migrations from a VM, clearing the data stores, and carving the volumes to those VMs. One key factor is the data compression with a ratio of 5:1, focusing on space efficiency, inline deduplication, and the compression Pure Storage FlashArray works on; that is a major factor we can suggest to any customer. Analytical capabilities are crucial. Daily, we check the throughput and consumption, and Pure Storage FlashArray provides predictions for one year regarding usage. This prediction helps plan updates well ahead. For support, we just raise a case, and they follow up and get it done. There is also AI readiness, but with the model R2, we don't have much of that AI readiness. For others, we do have AI readiness that predicts capacity based on daily or monthly trends, enabling us to analyze how much space we need or if we need to expand the disk shelf. From an operational point of view, a good feature is that if you accidentally delete a volume, it will be retained in the destroyed state for the next twenty-four hours, which is not the same with any other vendor. I have worked in this storage domain for the past fifteen years, and this option is remarkable, benefiting any L1 or L2 engineer. Additionally, from a compliance perspective, Pure Storage FlashArray has REST APIs enabled. I have not explored automation much, but from a security standpoint, it is strong with encryption data. If you want to automate, you can easily integrate with all clouds and explore Pure Cloud for scheduling workloads, including volume creation. Customers find benefit in Pure Storage FlashArray's single management pane of glass due to the dual controller and active-active setup. If one of the controllers goes down, all workloads automatically shift to the other controller, ensuring their data is safe and accessible at all times. This is a highlighted feature that any customer desires because their data should always be accessible. For SAN workloads, we use Pure Storage FlashArray because for SAN FC fiber channel, we don't use it; we use NetApp for NAS activities. We have clearly split this, so SAN is for mission-critical applications, while network-attached storage handles file systems. This architecture helps us maximize the benefit from Pure Storage FlashArray due to the significant workloads from this giant retail client. From a footprint and energy consumption perspective, you can see energy consumption from the Pure1 storage portal on a daily basis, and it is very compact. The three models we use consume only three units, which is quite low. From a footprint and data center perspective, it doesn't occupy much space. As everything moves to cloud, there are requirements to avoid excess spending on data centers, and Pure Storage FlashArray is efficient in energy consumption and is environmentally friendly.

Disintegrated all‑flash storage has boosted ERP performance and delivers instant operational insights
I appreciate that HPE Alletra Storage is an all-flash NVMe storage with a disintegrated architecture, allowing me to enhance performance without needing to add capacity. If I'm buying the Alletra MP 10000 right now with two controllers and 24 NVMe drives, I can simply add a single controller to boost my performance without being stuck with the limit of two controllers at a time for upgrades. Seamless integration with existing infrastructure is absolutely important to our organization's strategy because otherwise, I would need to redo everything repeatedly, which consumes significant time. We do use the AI-driven insights in HPE Alletra Storage. The AI-driven insights for Alletra MP 10000 greatly assist our data operations by providing immediate access to insights without going into the storage or asking the storage administrator for data. This enables any storage manager to easily obtain insights regarding performance, IOPS requirements, disk usage, and compression ratios from anywhere in the world. In terms of predictive analytics features, HPE Alletra Storage automatically opens and enriches support cases with diagnostics during any storage issues, which drastically reduces the mean time to repair and eliminates manual log collection, resulting in much higher efficiency in support automation.

A versatile storage solution suitable for various workloads in cloud environments providing scalable architecture, granular Quality of Service and consistent performance
The most significant benefit lies in its exceptional performance, driven by its Flash-based architecture. This enhances routing speed and, consequently, database performance. The provisioning process is efficient and doesn't demand higher latency, ensuring optimal data transfer performance which is particularly valuable for tasks like data mining, where quick results are essential.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The stability is very good. I've done destructive testing on it and never had any type of storage outages from it."
"The most valuable features would be its performance, retrieval, recovery, and backup, and it meets the customer's expectations."
"FlashArray has many valuable features. It's very user-friendly and it has high availability, so there is comparatively less downtime. During maintenance, there is no shutdown procedure, so you can directly power off the Array and manage the shutdown process without any data loss, which is a unique feature. Managing replication and data migration is also very easy."
"Now they are trying to add more and more applications because they're getting better performance and stability."
"We were actually able to do multiple upgrades, including head upgrades and moving between the platforms, M20 and M50, over the years. We have never once lost a ping and have never had an outage due to an OS upgrade or a complete head upgrade."
"The most valuable feature is that maintenance is free."
"After the implementation, the time to run the process was reduced to minutes and it did not require any manual intervention from our DBAs."
"The all-flash disc is the most valuable feature of this solution."
"Technical support is excellent."
"The most valuable features of HPE Alletra Storage that I have found are performance and ease of configuration. It's overall fantastic."
"The performance is valuable. The NVMe performance with VDI plays a big role. There is efficiency of the array and replication between two sites. A lot of customers use Alletra for production and DR and do replication."
"We have the most advanced HPE products available that we can monitor with the HP InfoSight feature, which enables us to check every metric, including bandwidth and latency, at a granular level. Alletra's mechanism is excellent and can handle multiple traffic sources. Anything is possible. Regarding your application, the IO behavior can be random, sequential, or a database. It serves web and e-commerce applications better."
"The greatest benefit we have seen is at the level of increased disk space and speed with the new features of the HPE Alletra Storage server."
"The solution has reduced my data management operation expenses by approximately 20%."
"The most value aspect is the data reduction and compression."
"The features of HPE Alletra Storage that I appreciate the most are the stability and ease of use."
"The product is easy to manage and deploy, it's got full API functionality and the performance is pretty steady."
"Initial setup was very straightforward, easy."
"The scalability and being able to implement it quickly."
"We can just buy them, scale them as we need on demand, and we don't have to spend so many front end cycles on designing the architecture."
"To my mind, it offers a unique combination that isn't easily matched in the marketplace."
"SolidFire provides seamless performance across your storage system when you need to scale up. Other storage systems do not do that."
"Being able to provide quality of service as promised."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is its scalability."

Cons

"It falls far short of protocol support."
"It would be good to have metrics of the box's performance so we can see what it delivers, but currently, I can't see what it's actually doing."
"The best way to improve Pure Storage FlashArray is the active DR because that can get very confusing, especially when you're trying to test a failover and replicate back; better instructions on how to do that would help because we actually lost an entire volume when we were testing out some stuff as the fingerprint got reinitialized, and when you replicated back, it didn't know about that volume, causing a failure in that process."
"It can go down from time to time, but it's been pretty solid so far."
"They have a product, FlashBlade, which is their object storage integration, and that's something that we haven't integrated with yet. This might be an area for additional focus as it would play into scalability, because the very nature of object storage is that it's infinitely scalable."
"We have not seen a reduction in our TCO nor have we seen ROI."
"The negative aspect of Everpure FlashArray is that migrations can be somewhat complicated."
"The internal garbage collection process has been fixed recently in some OS updates so it is more efficient but that could be just a little better."
"They are definitely going to start pushing more on MP for files. This was an area where HPE was not very strong, but now, with Alletra MP, it is going to be very strong. Most importantly, there is going to be the flexibility of moving compute and storage on Alletra MP. This flexibility will be very good."
"Licensing is always a challenge since nobody enjoys those costs, though having support going forward gives me peace of mind."
"I'd like the solution to offer more free training."
"I have experienced some issues, not necessarily downtime. That said, we had some controller issues at one point; however, since I have redundancy, we really didn't experience any downtime."
"We haven't had any issues with the solution so far."
"Since it's a slightly cutting-edge technology, we had to put in quite a lot of new fabric and stuff for it. That's probably the only thing people need to be aware of—to make sure you've got everything sorted out upfront to make the implementation smooth and fast."
"I would like to see more compression and more scalability in the next release of HPE Alletra Storage."
"Sometimes, with HP, there may be language barriers, and they seem to cycle through tech a lot more. That said, overall, I always get the answers I need."
"When you set up the nodes, we have to serial into each one of these nodes to configure the IP ranges. It's still very easy, but it's time consuming."
"In fact, the price is quite high compared to other vendors, but what we really loved about SolidFire was the agility of the team."
"SolidFire should start from two nodes instead of the four nodes. That's the only thing. In a lot of solutions, we have to use four nodes, that's the better thing. But as a starting point, two is better. That's why their starting point is expensive."
"Technical Support: That is a problem we have. When we call tech support, we have to open a tunnel to the SolidFire device, then tech support can get in and look at it."
"A little better segregation of the multi-tenancy. Right now, it's just VLAN-specific, that's all you can do."
"We had some false positives, power supplies failing, and that's really been about it. We had a couple of glitches during some upgrade processes but nothing that was really concerning to us."
"We have a large fiber channel infrastructure, and that's one area that we haven't seen implemented in SolidFire, it's more iSCSI."
"The user interface needs to be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It's expensive, but you get what you pay for."
"I would rate it a seven out of ten for pricing. It could be improved."
"There are no fees for licensing. The hardware is paid for only once."
"We are finding the TCO of flash to be lower than SSD implementations."
"It is not the cheapest one out there. We're paying yearly, but I'm not 100% sure."
"It is a cheaper solution."
"The price-to-performance is good. I looked at Pure about three to four years back, but the price-to-performance wasn't right for us. Now, it's right."
"Price per terabyte is substantially higher than their competition. We would like to see it drop."
"There is a license. HPE Alletra uses a cloud-based model."
"It is fairly priced. It is in line with industry standard pricing and cost models."
"HPE was a clear winner on price per terabyte. It was very smooth."
"For us, its price is good."
"The main competitor in the market for HPE Alletra Storage is Dell Storage, as they are selling at a low price."
"Its pricing is very competitive."
"Its price can be optimized."
"The solution is expensive and can cost around five lakhs."
"Based on what I heard from other people, its price was on the higher side."
"We would probably use SolidFire more, except we're getting more bang for our buck with our purchases of ONTAP right now, and the deal we made with NetApp, so it's more of just a cost decision"
"It might be considered expensive, but when evaluating performance, it represents good value online because you pay for what you get."
"On a scale where one is a high price and ten is a low price, I rate the solution between three and four. It is an expensive solution."
