Helps to save money and resources with the data compression feature
One point I'd like to improve is that the tool should start selling small boxes again. It discontinued some products and is focusing on bigger, more capable boxes, neglecting the SMB market. Even though it's not a big market, it shouldn't have removed them. One way to improve the product is to add an operational assistant that doesn't depend on VMware. It could also establish more alliances with other operational systems.

Provisioning and encryption ease improve data storage efficiency
To improve HPE Alletra Storage, it needs to have a true active-active controller; it claims to have an active-active controller from the back end, however, the second node is pretty much sitting there doing nothing. The MV 10000 series, which is the next series, is an improvement to HPE Alletra, and HPE is already doing that. In the next release, I would prefer to see better dedupe features; I know other companies do excellent dedupe, and they have protection group policies, meaning you have immutable data in case of a ransomware attack. If you're on the SAN, it should give you a way to protect that data without being erased. Other vendors have that capability built-in, ensuring that you can't erase the data, so features similar to that would be great.

Offers a simple user interface and is useful for data replication
I use HPE Primera for mission-critical applications. My company uses the product as a storage solution for our machines. The availability of HPE Primera in our company is critical for us, considering that we operate in an HA environment where we can't have downtime since we need to deal with cheque clearance for banks. The product's interface is simple to use. I am satisfied with the user experience provided by the product. The ease of use of the product's interface has directly had an impact on our company's operations, along with the improvement in the availability and performance of machines. Compared to HPE Primera, I work with a much more reliable storage solution like Dell PowerStore. Compared to HPE Primera, Dell PowerStore's features related to deduplication are very good, and it also offers a physical storage capacity of eight TB, which can be expanded up to forty TB. I would recommend the product to others who plan to use it only after taking into consideration their usage and requirements. From the price and performance point of view, Dell PowerStore is a better choice. I rate the tool a seven out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"FlashArray has some fresh efficiency features. I've never seen a storage solution with a compression rating this high before. It's at least 4-to-1 on Oracle databases. It's the best flash storage for Oracle."
"What I really like about this program, is that it is easy to use and easy to configurate."
"It has benefited my organization because it has reduced time to insights."
"We're able to get higher-density workloads on the same infrastructure, and we have a smaller physical footprint. The performance is excellent – during our test the bottlenecks are never on the X array, it just keeps picking up the pace to match what you need. The real-time visibility is a differentiator in my opinion."
"Pure Storage has signature security technology, which cannot be deleted, even if you are an administrator."
"The solution is scalable."
"The latency is good."
"Everything, especially the VMs inside, is pretty fast."
"The reliability is very good."
"We are saving a lot of money after procuring Alletra."
"The capability to predict problems and prevent them before they occur is exceptional in HPE Alletra Storage MP."
"The features of the HPE Alletra Storage benefit my organization by providing space saving through dedupe."
"The features of HPE Alletra Storage that I prefer most are the copy of virtual volumes. These features benefit my organization by providing fast performance and low latency."
"There is ease of use for junior admins. We have VMware integrations for data stores, cloning operations of existing data stores, and InfoSight analytics."
"The solution has been rock-solid since we've had it."
"One of the best benefits I can think of is that the support team is top-tier."
"HPE Primera is quite a stable storage system that provides good provisioning and allows for the changing of partition sizes."
"It is a stable and scalable solution with quick and efficient storage capability."
"The high availability was most valuable because they come with what's called 100% data availability. With special terms, they license and guarantee 100% data availability. That was probably one of the key features or components that HPE was offering with that model."
"HPE provides good support through their customer service."
"The greatest advantage is the support when we encounter incidents, as HPE's support is highly responsive."
"Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"The most valuable feature of HPE Primera is its performance and simple replication."
"Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."

Cons

"It's more multi-tenant functionality in their Pure1 manage portal that is lacking."
"The UI for this solution needs to be improved."
"I would like to see some AI features that would allow arrays to intelligently identify threats or unusual behavior in the data pattern and give an alert."
"In the future, I would like to see integration with enterprise backup systems."
"In the next release, I would like to see real-time analytics for further insight into consumption models."
"It is on the expensive side."
"We need better data deduplication."
"Maybe the price can be reduced since the solution is very expensive."
"We have more than traditional use cases. If they could explore new configurations for data storage, it would be ideal."
"I would say that maybe the user interface and experience could be improved."
"I would say that HPE Alletra Storage has not reduced my data management operation expenses at this time, because we aren't probably leveraging it as much as we could."
"We had a good base with 3PAR, which we're replacing Alletra right now. However, the integration with DCCS could still use some work. It's in its infancy and needs more features."
"HPE Alletra does not really provide a cloud-like operational model on-prem for managing data infrastructure. The limitation is that we cannot really downscale HPE Alletra Storage, even if we are running on the GreenLake; that's the nature of the storage."
"HPE Alletra Storage pricing can be improved. The pricing, licensing, and software have changed."
"There are so many features of HPE Alletra Storage that I probably don't even know about, and as a small shop, we probably don't take advantage of half of them."
"For the 6000, we'd like to see active-active controllers."
"Price is always important in Turkey, so HPE could lower the price to keep it competitive. It's not as competitive as other solutions in this market."
"On the hardware side, you should have the ability to expand capacity to larger numbers."
"There really isn't any aspect of the solution that needs improvement for the customer other than its price."
"The solution could prove the reporting."
"The price of the product is an area of concern. From an improvement perspective, the solution should be made more affordable in terms of price."
"When we asked for HPE support to resolve issues, their help was punctual and on time. However, the depth of root cause analysis provided was not satisfying."
"This solution would be expensive for small business and it could be priced more competitively for that market."
"Like most storage, we want to see flash become more and more stable. Like any flash that uses MLC or TLC techniques, over time, the more writes you have, the less usable the storage becomes. They try to plan for this and have a lot of extra space in the arrays, but over time, their performance does degrade. This is true for any flash storage."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The tool's pricing is cheap; I rate it a six to seven out of ten. Most of our sales are not subscription-based. We sell the hardware, and customers keep using it. They only renew the service part annually. The support can be a bit pricey, but the solution is more cost-effective than anything else out there."
"The support cost per array is about $20,000 a year for 24/7 support."
"Its price could be better. It is not too expensive, but it is the high-end cost. It is kind of a Rolls-Royce. You pay a lot, but you get a lot out of it. So, the price pressure on the way down would be great, but at the end of the day, if you need to do the work, you just pay for it."
"With VMware, we pay $300,000 annually."
"The product is expensive."
"Our licensing fees are $500,000+ USD."
"Given its price, Pure is not the first option."
"With Pure Storage, we would like to continue seeing price reductions with flash storage. I don't think we're any different than anybody else when we continue to look to the industry for price reductions of both NVMe and traditional SSD storage. We would like to see these prices continue to decline and erode, even displacing large spinning disks."
"So far, so good."
"The solution is expensive and can cost around five lakhs."
"HPE was a clear winner on price per terabyte. It was very smooth."
"The pricing is somewhat high, but when customers choose HPE, they often prioritize the brand value over pricing. The pricing is higher compared to other vendors."
"Its pricing is very competitive."
"For us, its price is good."
"Its price can be optimized."
"There is a license. HPE Alletra uses a cloud-based model."
"HPE Primera is a little bit higher than Dell PowerStore...HPE Primera costs around 80,000 USD."
"The solution is quite cost-effective."
"The solution’s pricing is affordable and worth the money."
"I rate the product price a seven on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive."
"The solution is cost-effective. I rate it an eight out of ten, with ten being excellent."
"The license for HPE Primera is all-inclusive."
"I believe HPE Primera and Pure Storage are similar in price."
"The price of HPE Primera could improve, it is expensive."
