Centralized modular platform has improved data center management and supports mission-critical workloads
The main area for improvement I see is the training process. When you use anything, how easily it is to manage is very important in hyper-converged solutions. If you compare it with VMware, it is very familiar. HPE Converged, however, is very large to understand for a new person. I am talking about training and management perspective, and user management. A system integrator and any system engineer who will operate and manage the system should find it easy to understand any configuration part and understanding part, which is currently a little bit tough. In Virtual Connect, we need some improvement. If we are going to move to hybrid, we need to easily move VM transactions from on-premises to cloud. We require a good, more easy process for day-to-day activities. Performance-wise, HPE BladeSystem is good regarding its ability to support mission-critical applications. However, reliability is all dependent on the core and memories, which will centrally control the entire blade and hyper-converged. We require more reliable things because if something goes down in the controller and center control, it is very tough to manage. We require a centralized image that will be replicated to any other device immediately, and all configurations and everything will come as soon as possible.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I think the thing about BladeSystems is the quality of the engineering that goes into them."
"It is a stable, dependable solution."
"We have the HPE care packs - supported contracts are 24/7 response time; it's the peace of mind that if my hardware were to ever fail, I'd be back up and running quickly."
"The mail exchange server runs smoothly on the Blade Server."
"Our requirement is 99.9999% uptime, and that is what we have experienced from these servers."
"The integration with our existing environment, and its ease of use are valuable."
"Valuable features include the speed at which you can deploy a system, the server profiles, and the ability to move those profiles around at will."
"Have a serious look at this. It brings a lot of value for us."
"Overall, the product has great value for money."
"BladeCenter HS22 provides great performance and reliability, with two Intel Xeon 5600 (3.60 GHz) processors and 12 VLP DDR-3 memory DIMMs, with expansion capability of 192 GB."
"We replaced five 42U server racks with two IBM S Series Blade Center chassis."
"The form factor is good for medium-level application hosting and does not take up too much space in the DC."
"Excellent support in case of any failure (and I am not saying this because I worked for IBM)"
"Before this solution, we used rack mount servers, but this solution saves physical spaces and increases reliability."
"The servers have enabled us to run critical applications, backup of critical data, and storage systems on the same products without downtime issues that could otherwise be caused by hardware or software issues."
"Central management of all blade servers and performance: It helps us to access blade servers remotely even at boot time, as well, when we can access the BIOS setup remotely."

Cons

"There could be more management capability to work with integrations."
"I would like to see the upgrade path a little bit smoother. We can't pull the servers from the current Blade over to the NonStop system because of the different connectors."
"The support you get is dependant on the region. Some regions are better than others."
"The setup process is complex."
"The response time in terms of getting technical support assistance could be improved."
"With the management software, sometimes we can't run a new Java version or Active X."
"The only missing piece that would be great to add to this converged solution is an integrated KVM system that comes inside the blade enclosure, that will give flexible and easy access to the different nodes in less time."
"HPE has a replacement system called Synergy, though it’s a more high-end system than the old C7000."
"It was quite unfortunate that I lost data while using this blade server."
"Because this is an old IBM blade chassis model and servers, we faced a couple of issues during VMware implementation."
"The storage part of this product needs to be improved."
"Performance is good, but on heavily non-linear workloads, they tend to have some issues."
"Firmware updates are troublesome and difficult."
"If we talk about scalability, it is quite expensive, especially when you need to buy more blades."
"Need some level of technical knowledge to configure it."
"It needs better management software."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price of HPE BladeSystem could improve. They need to reduce the price to be able to compete better with other vendors, such as Dell."
"The prices for the HPE Virtual Connect Modules are expensive compared to other I/O Modules available."
"The product’s price is high compared to one of its competitors."
"The price could be cheaper."
"The licensing is on an annual basis."
"Regarding the cost, HPE BladeSystem is not cheap. The solution and its support are costly, and there are challenges with renewal and pricing, especially in Nigeria, due to the dollar rate and FX issues. However, it is reliable. I don't have specific figures for licensing costs, as the procurement and finance departments handle them."
"I need to pay for the license, and it is expensive. We make yearly payments."
"We have an annual license."
