Near-zero downtime has protected critical workloads and now simplifies hybrid cloud recovery
The best features of HPE Zerto Software are mainly very sophisticated and relevant to the current market. The data protection CDP part has real-time replication, unlike other solutions that have snapshot backups. We can set it up hourly, making it ideal for use with workloads. Another attraction is the near-zero RTO, with automated failover within minutes and one-click failover and failback. Currently, we are using a hybrid cloud solution, and HPE Zerto Software supports multi-cloud environments, making it easy to migrate between on-premises and cloud. Regarding the impact of HPE Zerto Software on our RTOs, we have near-zero RTO, meaning the system must be back online within thirty minutes if we measure the time. It is very quick to recover services. With HPE Zerto Software's near-synchronous replication, we have some CDP protection, so we typically write interceptions along with some asynchronous replication. There is almost real-time replication available.

Simply provides single-vendor, consistent cloud-based backup
I would say that the room for improvement comes under the heading of performance. We backup a lot of information in a 24-hour period. It works fine. But there's always room for improvement on that. If they would make my 24-hour backup cycle window, from start to finish, a 15-hour or a 12-hour backup window, I'd be that much happier. Just to be clear, there's no time consumption on the part of my staff. This runs fully automatically. But the concern is that when you do backups, you want your backup window to be as narrow as possible. Actually, our backup window is 20 hours, and it gets done in 20 hours. Because, the longer it lingers, the more of a window there is for a disaster to knock you down.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"What I like most about Zerto is that it just works at the end of the day. It is almost a set-it-and-forget-it solution in relation to its capability of keeping the DR environment in sync."
"Continuous protection is Zerto's most valuable aspect."
"Provides a simple interface for VM DR."
"From the recovery point of view while working with HPE Zerto Software, we save a lot in terms of time, money, and resources, especially during critical applications and deployment time, which is less complex compared to other applications."
"It reduced the backup recovery time of our main backup solution by several hours. It's reduced our time because before we have to build a system and restore the data, we install the application and restore the data that took us at least a good 24 hours to do that. And now it's really minutes for us to recover our backup solution."
"Comparing to a regular backup solution, it reduces downtime by 95%."
"The Move feature is the most valuable feature because it allows us to move the VM from our old environment to our new environment with minimal disruption."
"Zerto's user-friendliness is valuable."
"We don't think about our backups anymore, they're that reliable."
"The most important features is that it provides consistent cloud-based backup."

Cons

"Backup capability as it is limited and not as streamlined as it could be."
"My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing was that it was really expensive."
"I would like to have an overall orchestration capability that would enable you to do multiple VPGs in some sort of order, with delays in between."
"Zerto's effect on our RPO can be improved."
"Zerto's current reporting capabilities are insufficient for our needs."
"I want to have an OVF or some local deployment where I can deploy the ZVRA rather than having to push it from the console. Some of our smaller remote sites have relatively poor bandwidth, and they can't keep up with the constant deployment stream from our center console, meaning we have to find some creative hours to get around the bandwidth bottlenecks. If I could push out a small install file, install it locally, and then reach back to the console, that would be excellent."
"We have had issues with licensing, where the license we've been given by Zerto support doesn't include VSS replication, which was a pain at the time."
"When changing replication, the Delta Sync takes approximately six hours for six terabyte virtual machines. During this time, the virtual machine is inaccessible."
"We backup a lot of information in a 24-hour period. It works fine, but there's always room for improvement on that."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is very expensive. It is overpriced. No doubt. What held us up for many years from committing to buying it was always the cost. That's also why we only have 10 licenses."
"Licensing Zerto was very simple. They had a product that fit our size and scale. It made it really easy to choose."
"Zerto is a little bit on the higher side in terms of pricing. It would be better if they had a pay-as-you-go package."
"It was pretty appropriate. It was not too cheap, not too expensive. It was just about right."
"My understanding is that it's expensive but worth the price."
"There is a lot of confusion with Zerto licensing. They have a migration license and a replication license. They should simplify the licensing process. The migration license costs a lot of money, and it is only on a one-time basis. If you use that license, it ties to that VM. I might re-migrate that VM in the next five to ten years. It is another environment, but my license is stuck there. The replication license is fine, and I have no issue with its pricing model, but they should simplify the migration license."
"Its price can be better, but it is not bad. Most small-scale organizations can afford it, but they can come up with more customer-friendly packages."
"I do not like the current pricing model because the product has been divided into different components and they are charging for them individually."
