The couple of times we found issues with technical support from Microsoft for Microsoft MDS, they resolved them. The response time and understanding were adequate, though there was always a language barrier between the teams. The teams we worked with were in Korea, and it was sometimes a language issue.

Regarding Syniti Master Data Management's features, there is a concept called data as a product. Looking at that term, Syniti Master Data Management lacks a few things as it is a customized solution we provide to the customer. The customer demands include four to five different elements, such as data cataloging or metadata management, data lineage, data quality, Master Data Management, and data freshness, which need to be integrated into one solution that currently I cannot see in any software. The main focus is more on Master Data Management. I recently had an interview where they pointed out that I only own 10% of what they are looking for. This also applies to Syniti Master Data Management, which is more focused on creating golden records, but at an organization level, they need a more concrete solution from just one platform or vendor. Other solutions such as Informatica are moving toward Customer 360 degrees and Product 360 degrees, integrating easily into environments, while Syniti Master Data Management is somewhat lacking in customizing solutions based on customer needs.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The ROI is terrific and it means you can avoid building or purchasing a solution."
"The most valuable feature is the administration console."
"Unlike specialized tools, MDS is adaptable for various industries, making it a versatile choice for master data management."
"What I like about Microsoft, is that it has a huge database with many users."
"One of the main features I have found useful is the integration with Azure active directory."
"The most valuable feature of Microsoft MDS is its management."
"Enables non-technical people to directly interact with the BI system."
"It has a very good feature called Excel plug-in. You just have to install the plug-in, and then it directly connects to the MDS instance where you can maintain and manage your data and publish it right through Excel. You don't need to go to the front end to make any changes. It has easy integration with SQL Server, and you can use SSIS to do the ETLs. It is a part of the Microsoft stack. It works with most of the Microsoft stuff."
"The central data repository feature in Syniti Master Data Management is wonderful; it is an excellent feature, in my opinion."

Cons

"If Microsoft MDS were part of Azure, it would be significantly more helpful."
"The solution could be better integrated into Microsoft's other products."
"Microsoft MDS is outdated and lacks modern capabilities."
"In my 30+ years in IT I've never experienced a tool that only allows you to create reactive rules that identify bad data but never prevent it from getting saved. In a large enterprise I would rule this as a show stopper."
"There are occasions when the solution maintains SD and we get duplications of MDS."
"The Microsoft license cost could be lower."
"Microsoft MDS' language should be simple so everyone can use it easily."
"Stability can be fragile at times. If you are not attentive or make a mistake, it can cause problems."
"Syniti Master Data Management is more focused on creating golden records, but at an organization level, they need a more concrete solution from just one platform or vendor."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I would like to see better pricing."
"With Microsoft, we buy everything though an agreement, so we purchase volume licensing every year."
"The pricing of this solution is good."
"The solution does require a license and we have enterprise licenses."
"MDS is a part of the SQL Server enterprise license. I am not aware of any additional costs."
"Product licensing is very complicated. It would be helpful to have an online calculator to estimate the cost of a license."
"Microsoft MDS is an expensive solution."
"SAP is more expensive than Microsoft."
