Extensive functionality impresses despite occasional setup complexity
The functions and features of Oracle Enterprise Manager that I have found most valuable are its evolution from being problematic in 10g and 11g versions to becoming better and more stable. Now it has become a significantly improved product. We have integrated identity management, and we are using it for normal database examination, tuning, and performance. We are working with STATSPACK and similar tools that are integrated in Oracle Enterprise Manager. We are currently working with version 13.5, having upgraded from 13.4 last year. Automation is useful for improving operational efficiency, and there are many more opportunities to automate outside the databases. Not many things need to be automated inside the databases. We have jobs running, imports, exports, and similar tasks. To automate these processes, we utilize the Scheduler from Oracle, which is managed in the databases by the vendor. This is not part of our DBA functions in Oracle Enterprise Manager.

Drill-down monitoring shows us the entire transaction chain, from the front end to back end. It needs HTML5 interface.
I want to see a new interface that contains HTML5 features. The current version of Foglight (on-premise edition) is so fusty in comparison with leaders of Gartner APM Quadrant - i.e. Appdynamics, NewRelic, Dynatrace. If you try to compare SaaS and on-premise Foglight versions you can see differences in UI-design. It's my subjective experiences, but SaaS version looks more modern. Hope this helps

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I think the look and feel and the accessibility to the databases, the scale of environment support."
"It has improved significantly our monitoring and tuning of our databases."
"The job subsystem, monitoring subsystem, alerting, grouping of targets, and reporting features are valuable to us."
"Oracle Enterprise Manager provides a single pane of control that gives you the visibility to see all Oracle products, plus the non-Oracle products; hardware, software, middleware."
"Can easily visualize bottlenecks in database performance tuning with historical graph trends; whereas before it would be based upon manually tuning using scripts which are text based."
"The solution is easy to use and has good performance."
"I think what I really like in this product is that DBAs and my management development team don’t have to sit and manually write queries."
"I recommend Oracle solutions like T5 Super-Cluster, T5-8 and Oracle Solaris 11 operating systems, as they are highly scalable and fault-tolerant systems."
"The stability we have as a result of using it made up for the cost of the product within a month."
"Dell Foglight does analyze and optimize your virtual infrastructure. It definitely reduces operational cost."
"Real time database monitoring and alerting are valuable."
"Sometimes we can solve problems before they occur."
"The ability to track performance of an application or application suite over time is extremely valuable to our business partners and for our application development team with near real time results."
"With the APM you can replay the end user session and see issues quickly by viewing the session."
"The most valuable feature is drill-down monitoring, which shows us from one interface the transaction chain from the front end to back end."
"Over all in my organization, this product helped us to maintain health, risk and efficiency of the virtual infrastructure."

Cons

"I think with the documentation there could be improvements."
"Setting up the Oracle Enterprise Manager is challenging as it requires setting up a separate server."
"In a large organization with large number of targets, managing systems on an individual basis can be time consuming and difficult."
"Setting up provisioning can be challenging. Also there are a lot of bugs and some specific to platforms."
"The issues we've had with Enterprise Manager go hand-in-hand with our issues with SOA Suite. There are performance issues that we see tied to SOA Suite and the B2B functioning, all of which impacts Enterprise Manager."
"When contacting My Oracle Support, I encounter first-line support initially, which is inadequate as I require more in-depth support."
"The product is pretty comprehensive, but quite resource hungry."
"The reports are very busy."
"We had issues with deployment in the beginning until we had an expert guide us through the process."
"I would perhaps like to see more SSMS connections."
"We had stability issues for FTR. The player used to get hung while running the robot scripts."
"When we first turned on Foglight for the first time, it was like a fire hose."
"I want to see a new interface that contains HTML5 features. The current version of Foglight (on-premise edition) is so fusty in comparison with leaders of Gartner APM Quadrant - i.e. Appdynamics, NewRelic, Dynatrace."
"Stability was always an issue in large environments."
"I think installation and setup needs little more improvement especially when you are installing with external database."
"My only complaint from Foglight for monitoring is that you only get a plot for five minute average for metrics like CPU and Memory, on the application side I can see metrics more quickly at 15 seconds for metrics like active sessions, heap. I would like to see the same for CPU and memory."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is inexpensive to purchase."
"Be careful to only enable the packs for which you have a license as this is an issue we see time and again."
"The license is good but can be improved."
"The licensing is the responsibility of our customers."
"There is only the standard licensing fee. There are no other costs."
"The basic functions are free. You only pay license fees for advanced features."
"The solution is free."
"I rate Oracle Enterprise Manager’s pricing a five out of ten."
"Foglight can be expensive I would go with the pricing at a three year deal."
"I recall it being a very expensive solution relative to function and stability."
"The price is expensive for us."
"Since the product split – the licensing is a bit more complex."

I never use OEM for PeopleSoft but I use FogLight for monitoring WebLogic. I think FogLight should make the dashboard easier.

I would recommend go with Enterprise manager as it will give you a more graphical view about performance. Foglight is typical for sql queries whereas EM will give you OS performance too. I have recently installed OEM 12c Cloud control and it has some cool features like ASH analysis and ADDM comparison to check to time-periods and compare how and where performance has changed. If you need any assistance in setting up OEM 12C, I can help.
