Dashboards facilitate prompt alerts but discovery feature needs enhancement
I would recommend Broadcom DX Application Performance Management if a customer doesn't have any existing performance solution. However, ten years ago, the solution was better, and now there are many competitive options. My overall rating would be between six and seven. The product rating I would give is 6.5 out of 10.

Drill-down monitoring shows us the entire transaction chain, from the front end to back end. It needs HTML5 interface.
I want to see a new interface that contains HTML5 features. The current version of Foglight (on-premise edition) is so fusty in comparison with leaders of Gartner APM Quadrant - i.e. Appdynamics, NewRelic, Dynatrace. If you try to compare SaaS and on-premise Foglight versions you can see differences in UI-design. It's my subjective experiences, but SaaS version looks more modern. Hope this helps

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The Webview because I can obtain more detail and CEM because I can quantify the business."
"We had for several applications performance issues and with Introscope we were in many cases able to pin-point the bottlenecks and debrief them to the development organization to improve their applications."
"If there's something that you really need to get at that doesn't come out of the box, you can pretty easily put together some custom metrics and get those in place."
"The solution is stable, and I don't recall having any significant performance issues with it."
"It helps save resources for a company."
"The CA APM product is great to show you how your business is doing and where improvements can be made."
"It works well for us, gives a lot of visibility."
"MTTR has greatly improved, and teams are now better focused on the cause of application performance issues much earlier into any event."
"Real time database monitoring and alerting are valuable."
"At a glance I can easily see what is going on with all of my VMware environments, including top consumers of resources."
"The most valuable feature is drill-down monitoring, which shows us from one interface the transaction chain from the front end to back end."
"The ability to track performance of an application or application suite over time is extremely valuable to our business partners and for our application development team with near real time results."
"The product has improved the way we respond to database issues as it has made us more proactive."
"A lot of features for the price: Java/.Net instrumentation, End User replay (similar to TeaLeaf), and a huge library of monitoring cartridges."
"At a glance I can easily see what is going on with all of my VMware environments, including top consumers of resources."
"The extensive monitoring tools embedded in Foglight are a real asset."

Cons

"They tried to streamline the organization, that was the initial point of using APM. It led to so many internal changes, but it didn’t affect the organization much at all in the end."
"Upgradability to it is a project instead of a patch. If it was actually an automated process to where it just fed updates to our product that would be great. Now, we have to spin up an effort to actually upgrade the solution."
"Issues with the workstation interface which could be more productive."
"There are a couple of improvements that could be done on the agent side of APM. The agent stops collecting data if the machine is under stress."
"The technical support is very poor."
"I have a hard time upgrading CA APM. When I upgrade from one version to another, everything must be done manually."
"The documentation on customizing instrumentation of methods and classes (derivative files) could be improved, as well as some of the documentation interfacing into other APM products (ADA, CEM, ABA)."
"Had some performance problems with a few applications and had to disable some probes."
"We are running a Webmethods stack (Software AG) and Foglight is unable to instrument. We are in a POC with Dynatrace and it was able to instrument with little effort."
"Stability was always an issue in large environments."
"South African skill is scarce"
"I want to see mobile access application in the next release."
"They need to improve the stability of FxM and FxV."
"I recall that the lay-out was rather dull when I used this particular version of Foglight."
"Migrating to newer versions is always a challenge with Foglight."
"I want to see a new interface that contains HTML5 features."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I'm unable to give information on Broadcom DX Application Performance Management licensing costs, but all Application Performance Management products have expensive pricing. This means that it's not only Broadcom that's expensive, and it would be an advantage if the cost would be a little bit cheaper."
"On pricing, CA is very competitive. I think that's going to help in the long run."
"Althougth it is a bit expensive, it is really worth it"
"Broadcom is a better and cheaper option from the financial perspective. It also depends on the DLP plug."
"The license for Broadcom DX Application Performance Management is annual. The licensing model could improve because there is not any limit to deploying the agent, there should be some limits on it."
"Depends on the size of the product you need."
"There is some research needed to determine licensing costs, based on the number of DataPower instances for the Nastel agent, for example."
"Setup costs are quite competitive relative to other solutions, and simpler."
"Foglight can be expensive I would go with the pricing at a three year deal."
"I recall it being a very expensive solution relative to function and stability."
"Since the product split – the licensing is a bit more complex."
"The price is expensive for us."
