Alerting precision has reduced incident response times and improved department-level network visibility
The auto-pause sensor during the maintenance window is good without any false alerts, and it prevents me from getting flooded with alerts during planned maintenance, helping department heads understand their own network usage better. It has reduced incident response time by giving clearer ownership of each alert, ensuring alerts go to the proper recipient. SNMP testers and auto-pause are among the best features of PRTG Network Monitor, which is particularly useful for different departments such as HR and finance, where alerts can be filtered accordingly. The alerting features and dashboard of PRTG Network Monitor are very helpful, especially in our industry. However, the dashboard can look cluttered on smaller screens, which is one negative aspect. PRTG Network Monitor has impacted us positively; we have stopped getting flooded with alerts during planned maintenance or unplanned outages. Compared to others, this gives specific alerts very quickly and helps department heads understand their own network usage better, thus reducing incident response time so that each alert has clear ownership.

A solution with a great monitoring system and ability to control access remotely
The initial setup was straightforward. Deployment depends on the size of a customer. We make the customer in the enterprise server, and there is a download per customer for the installation package. We can also roll it out very easily, and when we install it on one or two systems, it explores the network for more systems. We can then fire a deployment package on the other systems. So in one hour, we can do a lot. Most of the time, 90% of the work is very easy, and the last 10% are the business-critical systems from a customer. Also, we manually install important customer systems, like special applications where we like to monitor specific services in the server itself.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Overall it is a very good tool to use."
"We use the remote probes a lot for our branch offices. Instead of deploying the full instance of PRTG, we'll put a remote probe out there. This simplifies the whole deployment for us."
"The features I like the most about PRTG Network Monitor are its NetFlow Collector and graphical monitoring functions."
"The remote probe feature in PRTG Network Monitor helps you monitor remote systems or your network at a lower cost than other solutions."
"PRTG Network Monitor is user-friendly and offers flexible alerting systems."
"Network Discovery is a feature that our customers like a lot."
"From my somewhat more high-level view, the summary dashboards are excellent, they give me what I need, and having spoken to the operations guys, it gives them everything they need."
"We're more proactive. Usually, we already know when something has gone down by the time we get the phone calls."
"They provide a lot of features; it's good and easy software."
"The solution has great workflow and server modules."
"One of the applications I have used the most was to troubleshoot users and I've never faced difficulties or issues with the application itself."
"It has been very helpful to get notifications about various issues with my servers and network to help me take action to resolve problems before they become major issues."
"It has made life a lot easier for the administrators."
"The setup is simple."
"We like the patching of the window updates in the client's systems. You can automatically do updates with a single click."
"So this solution allows for 24/7 support and is very handy."

Cons

"When you email the support team, they take three to seven days to respond and resolve simple issues."
"In the next release, PRTG Network Monitor should add a backup solution."
"The thing that we do struggle with a bit is in the historic data. If I want look over 30 days, because it averages out onto one graph, you can't zoom in and drill down information."
"The clustering aspect needs improvement, as there is a bit of confusion about you do when hit that 5000 probe mark."
"When using PRTG Network Monitor it is beneficial if you have prior experience with it, the user interface could improve."
"In terms of sensors and probes, it would be really cool if PRTG had a purely Azure-based solution. We had to install a probe on one of our cloud servers and then let that probe out from there. It would be really cool if it just monitored Azure without having to install something on the device."
"Limiting the bandwidth per host would be very good; however, that's beyond the capability of the PRTG."
"I have an issue with DFS, distributed file services... there isn't one by default. Taking into account the difference between DFS and DFSR as well would be great."
"It would be nice if it also had a desktop application, similar to the phone app, which would allow me to monitor and control computers from my desktop."
"Remote Desktop Assistance for Mac endpoints - not having this functionality is a major inconvenience in having to have two systems for clients using this platform."
"There are some bugs or glitches."
"They have good technical support but it's not excellent."
"Support needs to be improved because we've sometimes had to wait 24 hours to get a response."
"Sometimes the speed is a problem. When I've been remote controlling people, from time to time, there were some issues with people in Hong Kong."
"However, the solution does not allow you to make a script for just one customer, so it would be great if that is improved."
"GUI needs to be improved and the solution lacks a process for monitoring VOIP calls."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price was pretty good, very competitive."
"Pricing for PRTG Network Monitor is a nine out of ten. It meets my company's budget and monitoring requirements. My company is on a perpetual license."
"The price is actually on the cheaper side. If you're going with the unlimited license code, it's very cheap compared to competitors unless you're going for something free, like Zabbix. But you get what you pay for, and it doesn't have the full suite of products or tools like SolarWinds or a ScienceLogic."
"We've got the unlimited package... I believe it was around the £15,000 per year mark."
"We are using the premium version of PRTG Network Monitor. The price of the solution is a bit higher than competitors but it is worth the extra money. However, it would be helpful if the price was lower."
"While I am not the person who deals with pricing, I would say that we pay around 1000 pounds a year."
"There is a license to use PRTG Network Monitor and it is annually."
"We have an unlimited perpetual license, so we just pay support costs and it can scale throughout the organization."
