Cloud management and controller-less functionality are valuable features. The Aerohive model aligns better with the increasingly mobile workforce (i.e. high concentration of remote offices and telecommuters). The new Hivemanager NG product is a 100% improvement, making configuration even easier.

The new Hivemanager NG product is a 100% improvement, making configuration even easier.
Pros and Cons
- "Aerohive makes it much faster and easier to deploy."
- "There are still some support issues with the branch routers and the newer version of Hivemanager."
What is most valuable?
How has it helped my organization?
Competing products dependent upon controllers are a heavy lift. It can often seem as though you're managing a completely parallel network in addition to the wired LAN. This isn't the case with Aerohive. Most organizations don't have the human capital to spend on heavy management of a WLAN. Aerohive makes it much faster and easier to deploy. I had a a fully configured network (802.1X EAP/PEAP and guest SSIDs) deployed in a day. The built-in security features also make it much easier to provide compliance reports quickly.
What needs improvement?
There are still some support issues with the branch routers and the newer version of Hivemanager. I also think the branch routers are due for a significant update.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
We've had no issues with deployment.

We have been able to increase the bandwidth accessible to our users ten-fold though RADIUS server authentication with our MS Active Directory.
Pros and Cons
- "We have been able to increase the bandwidth accessible to our users ten-fold though RADIUS server authentication with our MS Active Directory."
- "The only thing that I can think of would be for them to provide a standard out-of-the-box WiFi policy template that could work as temp default setup without having to build a functional network policy in the Hive Manager."
Valuable Features
It's given us the ability to easily configure and install appliances.
Improvements to My Organization
We have been able to increase the bandwidth accessible to our users ten-fold though RADIUS server authentication with our MS Active Directory.
Room for Improvement
The only thing that I can think of would be for them to provide a standard out-of-the-box WiFi policy template that could work as temp default setup without having to build a functional network policy in the Hive Manager. This is nothing big, but would allow someone who doesn't have time to build out a complete policy to turn on WiFi after installation for test purposes very quickly.
Use of Solution
It's been two years since we had our campus covered with Aerohive appliances.
Deployment Issues
There were no issues and everything worked as expected directly out-of-the-box.
Stability Issues
I'm pleased with current performance and do not have any issues that need to be addressed.
Scalability Issues
We've had no issues scaling it.
Customer Service and Technical Support
Customer Service:
I'm very pleased with the level of customer service and Aerohive's attention to customer concerns.
Technical Support:I'm also pleased with the level of technical support. There has been nothing that I have found that could not be solved with either the knowledge-base solutions or technical-support chat help.

In our environment, we set it up with the L3 roaming feature, and it all seems to work fine.
Pros and Cons
- "One of the most fancy nice-to-have are the BR routers, allowing to work from home as if you were at the office."
- "A nice-to-have would be the possibility to set an expiry date for guest users in the User Manager."
Valuable Features:
The Aerohive HiveManager configuration environment is pretty straightforward and intuitive.

With minimal knowledge and experience, I was able to deploy it. We've had little issues with stability, but most were solved quickly with updates.
Pros and Cons
- "With minimal knowledge and experience, I was able to deploy a robust wireless solution that just works."
What is most valuable?
I've found Hive Manager to be the most valuable feature.
How has it helped my organization?
We went from a very unsophisticated wifi solution to an completely managed Aerohive setup. With minimal knowledge and experience, I was able to deploy a robust wireless solution that just works.
For me, this was basically a plug-and-play situation.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've used it for approximately 3 years.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
There were no issues with deployment.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We've had little issues with stability, but most were solved quickly with updates.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
There have been no issues with scalability.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
I have had no problems with customer service.
Technical Support:I haven't needed to use technical support
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were using consumer-grade, unmanaged access points.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was straightforward. It was extremely easy to get up and running.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented it in-house.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Yes, we evaluated Cisco and Aruba.

The amount of data that you can get out of the system gives you a great look into your network.
Pros and Cons
- "The management interface is intuitive and easy to navigate, while being powerful and granular in your ability to control the environment."
- "I have never really felt their mounting system for the APs is all that good. The plastic plates are a bit flimsy and not well designed."
Valuable Features:
The management interface is intuitive and easy to navigate, while being powerful and granular in your ability to control the environment.
I like the fact that even if the management system goes down, the network stays up. There is no single point of failure that requires redundancy in equipment.
The amount of data that you can get out of the system gives you a great look into your network.
Improvements to My Organization:
We were going from autonomous APs to a managed system and looked at several different vendors. The initial cost for all of the other vendors was far higher than the Aerohive solution, and even over 5 years it was still less expensive.
Room for Improvement:
I have never really felt their mounting system for the APs is all that good. The plastic plates are a bit flimsy and not well designed.

It's more robust, reliable and easier to mange than our last solution. The initial setup was complex, though no more complex than a similar wireless solution.
Pros and Cons
- "Customer Service: Our VAR/customer service is very responsive and always goes the extra mile."
- "The initial setup was complex, but no more complex than a similar wireless solution."
Valuable Features
I have found user profiles and auto provisioning to be the two most valuable features.
Improvements to My Organization
Aerohive is significantly more robust, reliable and easier to mange (from anywhere) than our last solution.
Room for Improvement
The initial setup was complex, but no more complex than a similar wireless solution.
Use of Solution
We have used this solution for 3 years.
Customer Service and Technical Support
Customer Service:
Our VAR/customer service is very responsive and always goes the extra mile.
Technical Support:Tech support is excellent. We used our "trial" period to not only trial the solution, but to also trial tech support. If the support had not been excellent, I would have never purchased the product no matter how good it was.
Initial Setup
The initial setup was complex, but no more complex than a similar wireless solution. Honestly, hanging the APs and running cable was way more of a pain than the planning and deployment of the Aerohive system.
Other Solutions Considered
We evaluated Ruckus, Cisco and Aruba before selecting Aerohive.

We spend less time configuring/maintaining/troubleshooting controllers at a multitude of sites. The initial configuration may seem a little daunting but is worth it.
Pros and Cons
- "The cost and feature set to scale for our deployment just made Aerohive a clear winner."
- "When there are errors, the description could be worded better to give you a better idea of what is wrong."
What is most valuable?
- Centralized management of APs at separate locations (we have over 10,000 APs spread over more than 190 sites).
- VPN capability.
- Controller-less so that we don't have to worry about upgrading a controller to support newer models of APs when they are released, or having to configure many controllers.
How has it helped my organization?
- We spend less time configuring/maintaining/troubleshooting controllers at a multitude of sites.
- "Single pane of glass" to go to when we need to troubleshoot wireless.
- Good troubleshooting tools that are built-in.
What needs improvement?
- When there are errors, the description could be worded better to give you a better idea of what is wrong.
- GUI could be enhanced more to allow more advanced sorting, greater variety of bulk changes, and more useful information when making deletions in configurations.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've used it for over 2 1/2 years.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
We did have issues with deployment, but not because of Aerohive. The issues were because of the vendors doing the work (cabling contractors and AP installers).
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We didn't really have issues with stability, and they were a lot less than our previous solutions.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We had no issues with scalability at all. Aerohive scales very well.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
Customer service is great.
Technical Support:Tech support has been great.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Yes, we were primarily a Meru shop with a little bit of Aruba and Xirrus. We switched because Aerohive presented a much better solution when our wireless RFP went out. The cost and feature set to scale for our deployment just made Aerohive a clear winner.
How was the initial setup?
The setup was a little complex because we had never used the product, and we were making network changes to how things were configured previously.
What about the implementation team?
The configuration was a collaboration between in-house and an Aerohive engineer. The implementation in terms of cabling and actual installation of APs were done through a vendor. The vendor expertise was not as great as we would have liked.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Meru, Aruba, Cisco, and one other that I can't remember were all considered before Aerohive was chosen.
What other advice do I have?
The initial configuration of the Aerohive solution may seem a little daunting, but it is worth it and becomes a lot easier as you begin to use it and understand how it works. If you are coming from a multi-controller environment, you will be extremely happy.

It enabled mobility and district-wide consistent performance.
Pros and Cons
- "If you need a wireless infrastructure, you cannot go wrong with Aerohive."
- "The PoE switches we purchased were/are very difficult to configure."
What is most valuable?
It provides cloud-based management and superior resiliency.
How has it helped my organization?
It enabled mobility and district-wide consistent performance.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've used it for four years.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
The PoE switches we purchased were/are very difficult to configure.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We encountered no issues with stability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We had no issues with scalability and, in fact, enlarging the environment was extremely simple.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
I haven't used it much, but it's great when I have.
Technical Support:Top notch! The technicians manning the help desk are very knowledgeable and proficient. They offer great advice and help with best practices.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We had a completely different way of doing wireless, so this was a "start from scratch" project. I evaluated a number of vendors and visited several peer sites before choosing a solution, though.
How was the initial setup?
As straightforward as you could expect from a complex project. Aerohive was the easiest portion of it too.
What about the implementation team?
The vendor is a reseller of Aerohive and would get a C or C+ from me. We cut loose very early from needing their support though, and that is to the credit of Aeorhive who gets an A+.
What was our ROI?
This is a school district, so N/A.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We evaluated Aruba, Rocket, Cisco, HP and one or two others.
What other advice do I have?
It has been a total success and well-received by our staff and students. If you need a wireless infrastructure, you cannot go wrong with Aerohive.
